My five ghostly husbands
Chapter 34 Thief career

Chapter 34: Chapter 34 Thief career

Angeline led them to the house positioned in the center-right, explaining it was the only one available for sale.

Ruby nodded, her gaze drawn to the reddish vines climbing the house walls, giving it a nostalgic, almost enchanting vibe.

Karl’s eyes sparkled with excitement, but he bit his finger to contain it, almost bouncing on his feet. Beside him, Milo looked misty-eyed, clutching Julian’s hand, giving it a reassuring rub. Julian, meanwhile, couldn’t quite believe it was real; he kept glancing at Ruby, wondering if this was all a dream, wondering if their wife had truly changed—and, if so, how she had managed to earn the money.

Adrian, on the other hand, was quieter than usual, his gaze sharp and thoughtful as he studied Ruby. His mind was racing, a mischievous thought taking root: Did she steal this money? And if she did... why didn’t she tell me? I could’ve helped her out.

In his mind, a "thief career" was as stable as any other. He glanced over at her with an intense, questioning look.

Ruby noticed his odd expression, raising her brows in confusion.

"Next time, call me," Adrian mouthed to her with an intense look, hinting that he could’ve been involved in her little scheme.

Ruby blinked, utterly baffled. Why would she call him? She didn’t understand him sometimes... and honestly, he was crazy enough on his own. No need to get involved in that.

"And that center-left house is mine. My husbands are inside—I’ll introduce you to them once I show you this place," Angeline said, leading Ruby along.

They walked up to the center-right house, where the floor of the patio had a classic stone look and was set up with two rocking chairs.

The door had six panels with a brass knob. As Angeline turned the handle, the door creaked open, echoing like an entrance in an old horror movie.

Inside, Angeline flicked on a light, filling the room with a soft glow. Though not very bright, it was enough to reveal the details. The house was empty of furniture, so Ruby realized she’d need to buy a full set. Her gaze was drawn to the large window in the living room, which let in a nice view, and the floor was black walnut wood, giving it a warm, rustic look.

Angeline gave her a full tour—three rooms in total, with one main bedroom slightly bigger than the others, a small kitchen, and a decent-sized bathroom and toilet.

Ruby looked around, taking in the house, and though she liked it, the thought of having to buy furniture made her sigh.

"You like it?" Angeline asked with a hopeful smile. "If you do, the old witch who owns it is resting at my house. She’s not in the best health, so her daughters are planning to move her to the city for better treatment and to be close to family. She brought the papers, so you can finalize everything with her directly."

Ruby nodded, her impatience showing. "Let’s finalize this quickly. I really need this house as soon as possible."

Angeline chuckled. "Of course! Let’s get it done."

Angeline led them into her house, which was warm and well-decorated, with an old but beautiful sofa set and vintage paintings that added a cozy look.

On the old sofa sat the elderly witch, her face etched with wrinkles, and her small, wise eyes watching them with curiosity.

"Granny, your tea," said a young ghost named Kenji, handing the old woman a cup. His green eyes and dark hair gave him a gentle, ethereal appearance.

Angeline grinned and turned to Kenji, gesturing to Ruby and the others. "First hubby, look! I brought my new friend," she said playfully, glancing at Ruby with a wink.

Ruby smiled politely, while Karl and the others looked around, taking in the welcoming surroundings.

’So, this is Angel’s first husband,’ Ruby thought to herself, noting how different he seemed compared to Hugo. Kenji didn’t have that intense, intimidating aura; instead, he was calm and gentle.

"Where’s the rest of the gang?" Angeline asked him.

"They were called by Pillu. Something’s up at his place, so they went to help out," Kenji replied, giving her a small smile.

The elderly witch relaxed on the sofa, cradling her tea cup. Her wise eyes drifted over Ruby and her husbands, lingering on them with a quiet curiosity. She smiled, a gentle expression that was somehow comforting.

Angeline stepped forward, introducing Ruby. "Granny, this is my friend, Ruby."

The old woman nodded, setting her tea down with a graceful, practiced motion. Her voice was soft but had a weight to it. "So, you’re interested in the house?"

Angeline nudged Ruby to take a seat on the sofa. Ruby obliged, settling herself across from the elderly witch, who watched her with a patient gaze. Meanwhile, Angeline motioned for Kenji to take Ruby’s husbands to another room to make them comfortable, leaving only Ruby, Angeline, and the old witch in the living room.

As the door closed behind Kenji, the atmosphere shifted slightly. Angeline leaned forward, smiling encouragingly at Ruby. "Alright, now’s your chance. Granny’s ready to talk business."

The old witch looked at Ruby thoughtfully, her gaze shifting to the floor for a moment. "I’m rushing to sell this house," she began in her low, aged voice. "So, let’s talk about the price. My daughter has already shifted our furniture, and the house is empty. I’m offering it at half price—normally, it would be 300 gems, but with it bare as it is, you can have it for 150 gems."

Ruby blinked in surprise, knowing how much 150 gems was in this world. For most witches, who earned an average of 20 gems a month, this was a hefty sum.

She nodded, her expression serious. "Yes, I’d like to buy it as soon as possible. You brought the papers?"

The old woman handed over a stack of documents, her gaze turning admiring as she watched Ruby. "You’re not quite as the rumors say," she murmured, almost to herself. "Youngsters may get distracted sometimes—that’s only natural. But it’s good to see one find her path again."

Ruby felt a strange warmth at the older woman’s words, sensing a gentle understanding Behind them. Smiling at her, she took the papers carefully.
