Chapter 27 Allergy

Chapter 27: Chapter 27 Allergy

"Don’t pretend to be innocent," sneered the witch, Sasa, licking her lips. "If you were truly innocent, you wouldn’t be here. No one is innocent in this place."

Karl’s anger flared up at her words. Without thinking, he bit down hard on the hand gripping his arm.

"Ahhh!" Sasa screamed, and Karl pulled back, feeling a wave of disgust rise in his throat. The whole scene made him want to throw up.

Sasa’s expression twisted into something darker, her face filled with rage. She grabbed his arms tightly and slapped him across the face.

"You dare to bite me?" she shouted, her voice echoing. Karl flinched, pain stinging his cheek as tears pricked his eyes. A few people glanced over, but no one stepped in to help. He could feel their eyes on him, yet they just looked away, uninterested in stopping the cruel scene unfolding before them.

"Stupid wife, stupid wife... Brother Adi, someone save me!" Karl shouted, his voice trembling as the witch’s cold fingers trailed along his neck. He twisted and pulled, desperate to break free, but her grip was iron-strong, refusing to let go.

A wave of anger bubbled up inside him—anger at himself for being so powerless. He hated how helpless he felt, how he couldn’t do a single thing to protect himself.

But fear crept in too, wrapping around his heart as he wondered what fate awaited him in her hands. His mind raced, grasping for any escape, any hope, but the people around just watched indifferently, leaving him trapped and alone in the witch’s clutches.

Ruby’s mind raced as she tried to think of a reason not to show her face. Biology wasn’t her thing at all—if she was a hero in computer science, she was a complete zero in biology.

Back in school, she’d failed biology more times than she could count, and her teacher couldn’t stand her because of it. Every lesson had felt like torture, and she’d barely scraped by with the minimum knowledge.

And now here she was, trying to think of some scientific excuse, but nothing came to mind. ’Great,’ she muttered under her breath, a hint of humor breaking through her panic. ’The one time I need biology, and I’ve got nothing.’

"Miss Ru," Annie, the old witch, called out gently. "Would you like to show your face, if you’re comfortable?"

Ruby bit her lip, feeling the pressure from all eyes on her.

’Ugh... Biology, you traitor,’ she muttered under her breath, shooting a quick glance at Astra, who was watching her with narrowed eyes, suspicion brewing.

Taking a deep breath, Ruby forced a serious look onto her face. "I’m afraid I can’t," she said firmly. "I suffer from... Photo-sensitivity Facialus Dermatitis. It’s a rare condition that, uh... makes my face sensitive to, well, public display."

??

Everyone: (o_O) ?

Everyone stared at Ruby, clearly bewildered.

"Uh... what is that?" Zorya muttered, her round black eyes wide in shock as she looked Ruby up and down.

Seeing their confusion, Ruby felt a surge of confidence. ’Not bad,Ruby, not bad’ she thought, mentally patting herself on the back. ’Guess I’m still a genius in biology... or close enough!’

She put on a sad, defeated tone, giving them her best tragic expression through eyes. "Yes, Photo-sensitivity Facialus Dermatitis," she repeated. "It’s this rare condition where I can’t face a camera. If I do, my face turns red, and I get, uh... well, aggressive. Like I’m allergic to cameras," she added, letting out a heavy sigh for effect.

"Oh, my dear, I’m so sorry, Miss Ru! We had no idea you were going through so much!" Old Witch Annie said, her voice filled with genuine pity. The other witches nodded sympathetically, casting Ruby glances full of sorrow.

Meanwhile, Astra was barely hiding her smirk, feeling a spark of satisfaction seeing Ruby ’suffering.’ Serves her right! she thought gleefully.

On the other side, Kaelan’s face was twisted in worry. "What about my future? Oh no, my wife is allergic to cameras... What am I supposed to do? Should I quit everything just to be with her?" he muttered, his deep blue eyes filled with genuine concern.

"Not so fast, Lan! Stop daydreaming and don’t talk about quitting," his friend muttered beside him, tugging at his gray robe with a sigh.

Kaelan’s eyes narrowed, his gaze turning cool and arrogant. "I’ll do whatever I like," he retorted, flipping his long golden blonde hair with a smirk. "I like her, and I’ll get her, no matter what."

His friend’s jaw dropped, looking utterly shocked by Kaelan’s determination. But Kaelan just turned back to the screen, his expression softening. His gaze lingered on Ruby, his eyes turning gentle, a rare shyness playing at the corners of his lips.

Seeing Ruby’s slight discomfort, Witch Annie gave her a kind smile and handed over the first-place trophy, a glittering car-shaped sculpture with "First" engraved on it, sparkling as if it were made of diamonds. She also passed her a luxurious red envelope filled with prize money.

Ruby’s eyes lit up instantly. If she were a cartoon character, there would be dollar signs shining in her eyes as she eagerly accepted the prizes. She held them close, practically beaming with joy, knowing no one would snap a photo thanks to her supposed "allergy."

Zorya approached Ruby after receiving her own prize, her eyes wide with admiration. "You’re so amazing, Miss Ru! You won the bet!" she exclaimed, handing Ruby two light red notes.

Ruby glanced at the notes, noting the large "1" printed prominently on them, adorned with a picture of an ancient fort silhouetted against a striking red moon.

A genuine smile spread across Ruby’s face, even though Zorya couldn’t see it behind her scarf. Still, the warmth in her eyes conveyed her happiness. "Thank you! You’re not bad either," Ruby said, her tone sincere.

Zorya’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment at the compliment as she scratched her head.

Holding the money tightly in her hands, Ruby closed her eyes for a moment, feeling a wave of gratitude wash over her. "Thank you, God," she whispered softly, appreciating the fortune that had come her way.

Gratitude changes what you have into more.
