Chapter 143 Quality
Chapter 143: Chapter 143 Quality
Ruby’s jaw tightened, but she stayed calm. If anything, this only confirmed that she was dealing with an inexperienced team. She crossed her arms, deciding to stay quiet for now and see how things unfolded. However, she couldn’t help but think to herself: How are they still shooting a movie with this level of understanding?
Ruby took a deep breath, steadying herself, and then turned to Sylvia with a determined look. "If I say I wasn’t spouting nonsense, would you be willing to give me a chance? But to make it work, you’d have to reshoot this scene."
Sylvia’s brows furrowed slightly, and she leaned back in her chair, her expression unreadable.
Before she could reply, Lyra erupted angrily. "What the heck are you talking about? Reshoot?! Are you crazy?! Do you even know what you’re saying?" Lyra’s face turned red as she pointed a shaking finger at Ruby. "The actors have already left, and we’re under a tight schedule! We barely have time to edit the first part, and now you’re telling us to reshoot?!"
Ruby’s eyes stayed fixed on Sylvia, unfazed by Lyra’s outburst, but Lyra wasn’t done.
"This... this thief is just making up nonsense to sound important!" Lyra said, her voice rising as she turned to the director. "Director, I’m telling you, don’t believe her. This level of editing is normal! What else could we even add? It’s fine as it is, right? Right?"
Some of the other team members nodded hesitantly, glancing between Lyra and Ruby.
Ruby clenched her fists, but her tone remained calm. "Fine? You think it’s fine as it is? The footage lacks depth, emotion, and realism. If this is what you consider fine, then I can see why your audience won’t care about this film." Her gaze swept across the team, her red eyes sharp and unwavering. "Editing isn’t just about cutting and pasting scenes together. It’s about bringing them to life. You can’t just slap on random filters and call it a day. The audience needs to feel something when they watch it."
The room fell silent for a moment. Even Lyra seemed taken aback by Ruby’s boldness.
Sylvia finally spoke, her voice measured. "Miss Ruby, reshooting would mean delaying the project and incurring extra costs. Are you confident enough that the changes you suggest will make a significant difference?"
Ruby nodded firmly. "Yes. But it’s not just about the reshoot. You need someone who understands how to make every frame count. You need someone who knows how to bring your story to life."
Sylvia studied her for a long moment, the tension in the room growing thicker. Finally, she leaned forward. "If I give you this chance, and it doesn’t work... it’ll cost us. A lot. Are you prepared for that?"
Ruby’s lips curved into a confident smile. "If it doesn’t work, I’ll take full responsibility."
"However," Ruby continued, her voice steady, "I will only help with one footage. I’ll handle the editing and post-processing myself, and this will act as a sample. If you’re not satisfied, I’ll leave on my own. But if you like my work, I expect to be paid accordingly." She met Sylvia’s eyes with confidence.
Lyra let out an exasperated gasp, throwing her hands in the air dramatically. "I knew it! Director, she’s only here for money!" she said, her voice sharp and accusing.
Ruby didn’t flinch. Instead, she turned to Lyra with a calm expression. "Of course, I’m here for money. Who works for free?" She tilted her head slightly, her tone carrying a hint of sarcasm. "But unlike you, I believe in delivering quality for what I earn. If you think that’s wrong, perhaps you should reevaluate your own work ethic."
A few of the team members stifled chuckles, and Lyra’s face turned red with anger. "You—!" she started, but Sylvia raised a hand, silencing her.
"Enough, Lyra," Sylvia said, her tone firm. She leaned forward, studying Ruby intently. "You’re asking for a lot of trust here, Miss Ruby. But I like your confidence. Alright, you’ll get your chance. Show us what you can do with one footage."
Lyra looked outraged. "Director! You can’t be serious! She—"
"I said enough," Sylvia snapped, her voice cutting through the room like a whip. "If she fails, we lose nothing. But if she succeeds, it could save this project. And frankly, Lyra, I’m not impressed with what I’ve seen so far."
The color drained from Lyra’s face as she shrank back into her chair.
Ruby nodded, her lips curving into a small smile. "I won’t disappoint you," she said simply.
"Good," Sylvia said, adjusting her chair as she stood up. "Come back tomorrow to the set. We don’t have any scenes to shoot today since it’s a half-day leave for everyone."
Ruby nodded, her face calm and collected. "Okay," she replied, her tone polite but firm.
However, as Ruby gathered her things and turned to leave, Lyra’s sharp gaze followed her. Lyra’s eyes narrowed with a mix of suspicion and disdain. "She’s just bluffing," Lyra muttered under her breath, crossing her arms tightly. "There’s no way she knows anything about editing or filmmaking."
Her friend leaned in and whispered, "Do you think she’ll embarrass herself tomorrow?"
Lyra smirked slightly, her confidence in Ruby’s failure evident. "Oh, she definitely will. Let’s just wait and watch. She’s just another nobody trying to act like she knows something."
Ruby, oblivious to their murmurs, walked out of the tent with her head held high.
However, inside, Ruby was thrilled. Another opportunity to make money had fallen into her lap. The thought brought a small smile to her face as she walked toward the market area, holding her bag tightly.
She flagged down a wagon ride and climbed in, heading back home.
If she really got this opportunity, it would mean traveling to the set every day. While she was excited about the prospect, a new worry crept into her mind—her budget. Daily travel expenses would quickly eat into her limited savings. She frowned, drumming her fingers on the edge of the wagon seat.
