Chapter 112 Hungry and sad
Chapter 112: Chapter 112 Hungry and sad
Ruby’s footsteps slowed as the fog thickened around her, swallowing the path ahead. She could barely see her own feet, and the twisted shadows of the branches above stretched across the ground like skeletal fingers.
Her stomach growled softly, a reminder of her poor decision to leave the house without bringing money.
Why did I run out like that...? she thought, sighing to herself. Adrian’s words had struck a nerve, dragging memories she had tried hard to bury back to the surface.
The way he looked at her—the disbelief, the anger—reminded her too much of someone from her past. Someone whose face she didn’t want to remember.
Ruby crossed her arms tightly over her chest, hoping the gesture would push the ache down.
But it didn’t.
Now, standing alone under the faint light of the flickering old yellow street lamps, she regretted storming off.
The streets were mostly empty, save for a few dimly lit houses in the distance. Their warm glow flickered through the fog, offering a small sense of comfort. At least someone was around.
Her red eyes shifted toward a large tree up ahead. Its twisted branches curled toward the sky like claws, and for a moment, Ruby considered sitting under it to rest.
But the way the branches swayed in the fog... something about it scared her.
For god’s sake, Ruby, she scolded herself. You’re a witch. What are you scared of? Ghosts? They live here like normal people. This isn’t your old world.
Taking a deep breath, Ruby straightened her back, brushing her long hair behind her shoulder.
I shouldn’t be afraid.
With renewed confidence, she continued walking, the fog curling around her ankles like misty tendrils.
But as the path stretched on, the fog grew thicker, swallowing the houses one by one until she was left with nothing but weird silence and the faint crunch of gravel beneath her shoes.
She glanced around. The familiar landmarks she thought she could follow were gone, hidden behind the heavy mist.
Her steps slowed.
Maybe I should go back...
But the thought of facing Adrian again made her chest tighten.
Ruby sighed, rubbing her arms.
I should have taken some money with me... or at least a snack, she thought bitterly, her stomach reminding her once again of her mistake.
Ruby muttered curses under her breath as she kept walking, her feet growing sore with each step. The shoes she wore were old, worn down from the original owner’s careless use. Every stone and uneven patch of dirt on the road pressed into her soles, making the walk even more unpleasant.
This stupid dirt road... she thought bitterly, glaring down at the uneven path. The lack of proper paved roads frustrated her. Most travel here was done by air, with fancy carriages, Victorian cars and ecto-bikes flying through the sky. The streets below? Neglected, left to crumble into dirt and scattered stones.
After about twenty minutes of walking, Ruby finally reached the market specifically food area.
Her stomach twisted painfully the moment she stepped onto the bustling street.
Rows of food stalls lined the road, glowing under strings of colorful RGB lights that flickered gently in the foggy air. The smell of grilled meat, fresh bread, and something sweet drifted toward her, wrapping around her senses and making her mouth water.
Ruby’s steps slowed involuntarily as she gazed around, her red eyes locking onto one food stall after another.
Ignore it. Just walk by, she told herself firmly.
But no matter how hard she tried, the hunger gnawed at her with every breath she took. The scent of roasted skewers sizzling over open flames made her stomach growl louder, and the sight of steaming buns stacked neatly behind transperant cases made her knees feel weak.
She clenched her jaw and forced herself to look away.
I should’ve brought some money...
Muttering another curse under her breath, she sighed deeply. Why couldn’t I bring the money I worked so hard for in my past life into this world? She thought bitterly. The memories of late nights, long shifts, and years of hard work in her previous life flickered through her mind.
She had poured her blood, sweat, and tears into that life, yet here she was – broke and starving.
All of it... wasted.
They were right, huh? You really can’t take your wealth with you after death.
Ruby kicked a small rock on the path, watching as it disappeared into the shadows.
What she wouldn’t give for even a single coin right now.
Her stomach twisted again, and Ruby sighed in defeat, leaning slightly against the corner of a nearby stall, watching the people around her eat.
She didn’t want to go home just yet... but staying here wasn’t helping either.
She walked aimlessly, her steps heavy and careless. The thick fog hung low around her, blurring the ground beneath her feet. She didn’t notice the large stone lying in her path until—thud!
She hit the ground hard, landing face-first. Thankfully, she managed to shield her face with her arms at the last second. But still—damn! Her chest took most of the impact, and pain shot through her ribs. She sat up slowly, wincing as she rubbed her chest and stomach.
For a moment, she just sat there, too annoyed to even get up. The cold, damp ground didn’t bother her as much as the frustration bubbling inside her. Instead of standing, she leaned back against the wooden wall of a closed market stall, curling up against it.
With a deep breath, she closed her eyes, listening to the muffled sounds of people nearby. Laughter and conversations echoed faintly through the fog, distant yet somehow loud in her ears.
She had never been lucky when it came to family – not in her past life, and clearly not in this one either.
In her previous life, her mother had died giving birth to her. As for her father... Please, she thought bitterly. I don’t even want to talk about him.
And in this life? The original owner’s parents had passed away too.
