Chapter 268 - Chapter 268 268 Returning to the Country
Chapter 268: 268 Returning to the Country Chapter 268: 268 Returning to the Country “I’m just going to take a look.”
Liu Yumeng heard Luo Xiyun’s words and didn’t say anything. She probably didn’t even believe those words herself.
The reaction of Luo Xiyun when she heard Chen Xu was in trouble just a moment ago proved that her feelings for Chen Xu were truly extraordinary.
“Okay.”
She started the car, went back to the hotel to pick up their luggage and passports, and drove towards the airport.
On the way, Luo Xiyun had already called to book tickets, the soonest flight back to the country was in three hours, which would take more than ten hours to reach. By the time she would meet Chen Xu, it would conservatively be twenty hours.
Liu Yumeng had come with her, so naturally, they would return together.
On the way to the airport, Luo Xiyun kept calling Chen Ziqi, but couldn’t get through, and her texts went unanswered. She then tried calling Chen Xu, with the same result. Her heart burned with anxiety.
Next, she called Chen Xu’s parents, but couldn’t get through to them either.
Finally, her only option left was to call Secretary Jin, who, when she got through, knew nothing of Chen Xu’s whereabouts, only mentioning that Chen Xu hadn’t gone to work that day.
It wasn’t until she boarded the plane and, reminded by the flight attendants, turned off her phone.
“Don’t worry, no news is good news. Think positive, now, try to get some sleep. Look at you, you look so haggard.”
Liu Yumeng comforted her.
Before this, Luo Xiyun had been accompanying Chen Xu at the hospital, where she hardly rested well. After they broke up, she couldn’t eat or sleep. It was only after arriving abroad these past few days that she had started to feel a little better.
…
In his dream.
Chen Xu was sitting inside the landing ship, holding an alloy lunchbox, eating a simple meal of rice, potatoes, and soy-sauced beef.
He ate while staring at the screen.
He had entered the dream nearly a month ago, and since then, those black birds hadn’t appeared again. But, he didn’t dare let his guard down. Each time he went out to work, he was constantly on edge, not daring to stray too far for fear of a surprise attack from the black birds.
And with him being alone, the progress on the construction was very slow.
The camp that was supposed to be built in a day, under the circumstance of him being alone, took a month, and still wasn’t finished.
The biggest obstacle was that he didn’t retain any memories related to that identity. It took quite some time just to get used to operating the engineering vehicles.
The primary function of the landing ship was transport. Only by establishing the camp could the devices and equipment brought by the spacecraft be set up and put into operation.
This included a massively destructive weapon.
Only after setting up these devices and that weapon could he proceed with the next steps.
“According to the plan, a supply ship should be sent today. I wonder if there will be any personnel support.”
He kept his eyes towards the sky, thinking.
Though he did not inherit the memory, through the space ship’s log, he saw the scheduled plans.
Every ten days, the spaceship would fire a small communication rocket to send the status of their exploration team back to the mothership. As long as the rocket escaped the atmosphere, the mothership could receive the rocket’s signal.
He had already sent back news of the other members’ demise. He didn’t know what the mothership would arrange in response, but he didn’t harbor much hope.
The dream equipment seemed determined to make him play this solo game; why would they send anyone to him?
The sky was covered with thick clouds, but strangely, despite the thickness, it didn’t feel gloomy. It resembled the clouds on a clear day, exceptionally white, like cotton candy.
“I wonder if those three rockets made it through the atmosphere.”
He was somewhat worried; not to mention, the supplies were crucial. If the planned supplies weren’t sent down, half of the camp’s functionality would be unusable. Establishing a foothold on this planet would be challenging.
After various tests, this planet was found unsuitable for human habitation. Other issues were minor, like gravity, the composition of the air, etc. The most troublesome was the radiation.
If exposed directly to this planet’s atmosphere, it wouldn’t take long for it to cause significant damage to his health.
This would pose great inconvenience to him.
In the future, if he wanted to venture outside, he would need to wear bulky protective suits. It was no different from surviving in space.
He also wondered how the plants and those black birds managed to survive here.
Then, he saw a spaceship break through the clouds and fly towards him.
“Here it comes.”
He felt a surge of encouragement as he waited for the supply ship to land.
The spaceship approached rapidly, and within minutes, the supply ship landed nearby.
Chen Xu didn’t act recklessly and sat there, finishing all his food. Just as he set down his bowl, he saw a large group of black birds appear above the clouds.
“It must be because the spaceship breaking through the clouds made too much noise, disturbing those black birds, prompting them to attack.”
He guessed inwardly, activated the spaceship’s defensive system, and opened fire, destroying nearly a third of the black birds in just seconds.
Then, the black birds surrounded both spaceships, pecking wildly.
With the experience from last time, Chen Xu remained calm. The spaceship, designed for space travel, had an outer shell that was reassuringly thick and hard.
As expected, half an hour later, the black birds returned whence they came.
This time, Chen Xu didn’t want to let them escape. He chased after them and killed nearly another third, while the rest flew back into the clouds.
…
When Luo Xiyun and her companion disembarked from the plane, it was already 5 p.m. Upon turning on her phone, she immediately opened WeChat and saw several messages from Chen Ziqi, the last containing a location.
Her fingers trembled as she opened it, “Sister Xiyun, sorry, my phone was out of battery, just charged it now.”
“About Chen Xu… it’s hard to explain over WeChat, we better meet in person to talk.”
“After getting off the plane, contact me immediately.”
“This is my location.”
Without hearing the news she was most concerned about, Luo Xiyun hurriedly called back, but the call indicated that the phone was turned off, which made her even more uneasy.
“Mr. Luo.” From a distance, Secretary Guo waved at them.
Before boarding the plane, Luo Xiyun had informed Secretary Guo by phone to come and pick them up.
Without any further delay, Luo Xiyun sent the location to Secretary Guo and said, “Take me to this place.”
Secretary Guo didn’t ask any questions and helped them with their luggage to the parked car and loaded it.
The address given by Chen Ziqi was a sanatorium, not in the city center, slightly off the beaten path, not too far from the airport, about an hour’s drive.
