Chapter 246 - Chapter 246 246 should be an accident
Chapter 246: 246 should be an accident Chapter 246: 246 should be an accident The night had deepened, and Chen Xu’s parents had already left the hospital, leaving only Luo Xiyun behind.
“Actually, you don’t need to stay here with me,” Chen Xu said softly to Luo Xiyun, who had just brushed her teeth and come in from the balcony. “There isn’t even a bed here, so you won’t be able to sleep well.”
“I’m not at ease with you here alone.”
Luo Xiyun placed the toothbrush cup down and sat on a chair beside the bed–an ergonomic office chair whose back could recline and had a pull-out footrest. For the past few nights, she had been sleeping on this chair.
Chen Xu suggested, “Otherwise, let’s find a caregiver.”
“I trust no one else,” Luo Xiyun replied as she reclined the chair back, lay down, and said, “Don’t worry about me. I go home to rest during the day, and besides, I’m used to it already.”
At that moment, a soft cough sounded nearby, and the two fell silent.
Luo Xiyun picked up her phone to read the news, while Chen Xu pulled out a pair of earphones, plugged them in, opened a music app, and found Bai Jinxuan’s new song, clicking play.
The new song had gone live at eight o’clock that evening. But during that time, he had succumbed to sleepiness and dozed off. He had just woken up.
Originally, Bai Jinxuan had wanted to send him her new song in advance for him to listen to it first. However, he had declined. He was accompanied 24 hours a day now, and he spent more than half that time sleeping. If someone else discovered the new song on his phone, it really would have been difficult to explain.
Thus, it was only now that he was listening to Bai Jinxuan’s new song for the first time.
The song was titled “Winter Romance,” and he vaguely remembered it. Bai Jinxuan had adored this song in his dreams; for a while, he would often hear her practicing it.
He clicked play. The melody at the start was somewhat different from what he remembered–it must have been re-arranged.
After about ten seconds of the intro, her voice finally emerged.
“Huh?”
He was quite surprised. Was this really her singing?
When he listened to the entire song,
even as a layman, he could tell that compared with her singing in his dreams, it was as if she had become a different person. It was clear that her vocal skills had significantly improved.
“Even with the technological beautification in the studio, it couldn’t possibly reach this effect.”
Though he made that judgment, he was somewhat unsure. As they say, love is blind; given his relationship with Bai Jinxuan, he couldn’t possibly make an objective assessment. Even if her singing was only worth sixty points, to him, it definitely deserved a hundred.
To him, her singing now matched the original singer from his dreams.
After listening a few more times, he couldn’t resist looking at the comments, seeing all the overwhelmingly positive feedback, and fell into a contemplation; how much of this was hyping?
Then, he couldn’t be bothered to scroll further. To truly know the quality of the song, he would have to wait and see how popular it could become over time. For now, it was only the hype stirring up waves.
Thinking this, he exited the app, took off his earphones, picked up a notebook from the table, flipped to the most recently written page, and after a moment of thought, continued writing.
He was organizing his thoughts, on how to utilize the vast knowledge he had acquired from his dreams. It would take some time and serious consideration.
A small lamp was clipped at the head of the bed, and with that dim light, he wrote for almost an hour, filling several pages until sleepiness overcame him. He then placed the notebook properly, turned off the lamp, and fell asleep.
……
Chen Xu had been in the hospital for over a week. Since waking up, Yang Jinxia had not appeared, keeping her promise.
Meanwhile, Bai Jinxuan was busy promoting her new song and had no time to visit him.
Usually, it was Luo Xiyun who accompanied him, his parents visited at set times, and Secretary Jin came every day to report on work matters.
Other than them, Old Tang and Dai Zixin also visited a few times, along with some other former colleagues once.
For him, this was a rare leisurely period since he had begun working. He didn’t have to rush to the office every day; his meals were prepared and brought to him, surrounded by friends and family. Honestly, the feeling wasn’t too bad.
On the tenth day in the hospital, by evening, Chen Xu woke up to find Secretary Jin sitting beside his bed.
Seeing him wake up, she explained, “Mr. Luo had something come up at home and had to leave.”
“Home?” Chen Xu immediately thought of Luo Zhenghai, wondering if he was up to some trick.
Secretary Jin clarified, “It’s something on her grandmother’s side.”
“Oh.” Realization dawned on Chen Xu. Xiyun had told him that after her mother had passed away, she was raised by her grandmother until she went to college. Because of this, she was especially close to her grandmother.
He asked, “Is the old lady sick?”
“It’s probably something else; I’m not very clear.”
Chen Xu took out his phone, opened WeChat, and indeed saw a message from her explaining that there was an issue at her grandmother’s house and that she needed to go back.
He put away his phone, got out of bed, stretched lazily, and said, “Lying around all day, I’m almost rusting. I’m going out for a walk,” and he headed out.
Secretary Jin didn’t stop him but followed behind.
They went downstairs and wandered around the open space below.
“Is the manager for the third branch decided yet?” Chen Xu suddenly asked as they walked.
“Hmm, I have a few candidates in mind. I’ll give you their details in a bit.”
“Good.” Although Chen Xu was in the hospital, he hadn’t relaxed his grip on the company’s affairs, such as personnel decisions, which he firmly kept in his own hands. He trusted Secretary Jin’s judgment, but such matters couldn’t be taken lightly.
As they talked, they reached a turning point.
“And another thing…”
Chen Xu spoke, suddenly feeling a heart palpitation, and without thinking, grabbed Secretary Jin’s hand and rushed forward a few steps.
“What’s going…” Secretary Jin, puzzled, heard a loud bang behind them that startled her. She turned around to see a black car smashed against the wall, its front completely crumpled.
She saw where the car had hit, and a chill ran down her spine. If Chen Xu hadn’t pulled her aside in time, she might have been hit directly. Given the speed of the car, the consequences could have been unthinkable.
Chen Xu also felt a surge of fear. He had sensed a great danger just in time. If he had been a heartbeat slower or had hesitated, he might have been severely injured or worse.
He looked grave as he approached the car and peered through the window, seeing a woman slumped over the airbag, motionless, dead or alive unknown.
It must have been an accident.
He looked back in the direction from which the car had come; the road was somewhat narrow and sloped.
Secretary Jin had recovered by then and took out her phone to call the police. Meanwhile, people nearby had gathered, pointing and talking about the car.
Soon, hospital staff arrived and took control of the scene.
