Chapter 232 - Chapter 232 Its up to you now for room 232

Chapter 232: It’s up to you now for room 232. Chapter 232: It’s up to you now for room 232. Chen Xu looked through the light screen on his helmet and glanced at Yang Jinxia’s position, a good ten or so kilometers away. In the past, traveling to any location involved sitting in a transport pod, so he never had a concrete concept of distance. Now, as he needed to walk, he realized just how vast the Dawn was.

When he reached the end of the corridor, he discovered that the door ahead wouldn’t open automatically. He pushed hard at a spot marked with a “manual” sign on the right, revealing a red lever switch.

He gripped the switch with his hand and pulled hard, and with a hiss, the door opened about ten centimeters. He moved forward, gripping the edge with both hands, and forced the door open.

Beyond the door was darkness, and the light from the corridor’s ceiling only reached part of the way in front of him. Looking from light to dark, his vision was eventually swallowed by the blackness.

He turned on the illumination lights built into his spacesuit, and a beam of light shone from each shoulder, illuminating about ten meters ahead.

He stepped forward, walking into the dark corridor. Before even setting foot on the floor, he felt a lightness beneath him and, without hesitation, kicked off with his back foot, soaring forward like an arrow.

The electric power in this region was cut off, and naturally, the gravity maintenance systems had stopped working, returning the area to a state of weightlessness.

The corridor had handrails on both sides, considered for situations like this, where moving in zero gravity would be very inconvenient. With these handrails, they had something to push off from, making progress easier.

Chen Xu, floating in the air, felt quite unaccustomed. It was difficult to control the strength in his hands, and it was easy to go off course. However, his natural talent showed itself, and after a few tries, he was fully adjusted.

“Taichu, can you let me talk to her?” He asked Taichu only after getting used to this mode of travel.

“Please switch the communication channel to wireless line 1.”

Chen Xu did as instructed, and a few seconds later, Taichu said, “You can now communicate.”

He urgently asked, “Yang Jinxia, are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” Yang Jinxia’s voice was a bit distorted, but she sounded strong, not like she was injured, which somewhat relieved him.

Then, she said somewhat gloomily, “However, I seem to be trapped.”

Chen Xu’s heart tightened once more, “Ah? What exactly is the situation?”

“There’s a corridor that seems to have deformed and jammed due to the explosion, and it won’t open. I’ve tried several levels, all the same.”

Hearing her description, Chen Xu said, “Stay where you are, don’t wander off; I’m coming to you now.”

“Okay, be careful,” she responded.

“I will,” Chen Xu said, then remembered something else, “Also, look around and gather some food and water. With the current situation, food and water might become scarce later on.”

“Got it.”

“Then that’s it for now, we’ll communicate again in half an hour.” Chen Xu ended the conversation.

Meanwhile, Yang Jinxia was suspended in the corridor, gripping the handrail with one hand and looking at the closed door through her transparent helmet.

“Master, do you need me to call S01 for assistance?” asked 2003, which served as a light source.

“No need,” Yang Jinxia shook her head, turned around, and said, “Let’s go, we need to collect some food and water; we might have to stay in this area for many days.”

With that, she took 2003 and headed towards a nearby residential area.

The ten or so kilometers was a straight-line distance, and when Chen Xu actually started traversing the path, he found that some areas were completely impassable. Like some of the more critical sectors, the doors were especially thick, and it was particularly strenuous for him to try opening them by himself.

After trying once, he would bypass similar places directly.

The most convenient path was actually through the transport channel of the escape pod, but the entrance was designed to lock automatically in case of a power outage to prevent accidents. It could only be dismantled with specialized tools. Operating it alone was very troublesome.

Another method was to force it open using the energy gun, just like last time, but the armory was in another direction. The time it would take to go back and forth, he could have found Yang Jinxia.

After covering nearly half the distance, he encountered an even bigger problem. This area might be near the explosion zone, distorted by the impact; doors everywhere were jammed shut, completely unopenable.

In such cases, he had no choice but to take detours, and the more he detoured, the more distant he became without realizing it, wandering over a dozen kilometers. Yet, his distance from Yang Jinxia seemed to grow further, reaching over twenty kilometers.

Even so, he was still able to keep his composure, contacting her every half hour to make sure she was safe.

Three hours later, he began to feel his energy waning and stopped to rest for a while, taking the opportunity to eat something to replenish his energy.

Mainly because he had just been through eight hours of studies and wasn’t in the best condition to start with, and after rushing for another three hours, he was extremely fatigued. Though it might look like he was floating along effortlessly, it relied on the strength of his arms and was particularly exhausting. After sitting down, he felt as though he could barely lift his arms.

“Chen Xu.”

He set an alarm and buckled his stabilizer to the armrest, closing his eyes to rest. Suddenly, Taichu’s voice rang in his ears, fluctuating as if the signal were being interfered with, “In the future, the fate of humanity will depend on you.”

From Taichu’s words, Chen Xu sensed an ominous premonition. “What do you mean?”

“The backup power source in the cockpit has been repurposed, with only one-tenth of it remaining. Now, the main power is about to shut down… Whether humanity can continue on will depend on you…”

Taichu’s voice grew fainter and finally stopped abruptly.

Chen Xu stared blankly at the wall opposite him; with Taichu’s shutdown, it signified that centuries of human effort in this world had turned into nothing. In their quest for survival, they fled the Solar System, but still could not avert the fate of extinction.

“It’s just a game, after all.”

He murmured, but the heaviness on his heart was not so easily dissipated.

Forty minutes later, Chen Xu continued on his way. This time, without Taichu to guide him, he could only rely on the map built into his spacesuit to grope his way forward.

It took him a total of more than twenty hours to successfully meet up with Yang Jinxia.

She was hiding in a room, and by her side floated several large bundles made of curtain fabric.

When Chen Xu entered, she didn’t react. On closer inspection, she had fallen asleep. 2003 made a silence gesture next to her.

Seeing that she was unharmed, he finally relaxed. He gestured to 2003 that he was going to look for something, put down the things he was carrying, and then turned and left.

With Taichu’s shutdown, it meant that all equipment aboard the Dawn was no longer operational, unable to produce any industrial products. They could only make use of the supplies already on hand.

The most troublesome was oxygen.

The Dawn was large enough that, even without producing new oxygen, it would suffice for them to survive a considerable period.

The problem was that, with those explosions, it was unknown to what extent the spaceship was damaged and whether it might breach the ship’s outer hull. If a leak occurred, they would have to rely on spacesuits to sustain life. They would need to replace the power source and the small oxygen production equipment periodically, which would be very inconvenient.

Even more troubling was that there was a small asteroid belt ahead that they were due to reach in three days. The original plan was to use the ship’s hundred main cannons to blast a safe passage.

Now, this plan was obviously no longer feasible. Three days hence, the Dawn colliding with the asteroid belt at its current speed would result in the destruction of both ship and crew.

The only way to save themselves was to escape aboard the spaceship Yang Jinxia had.

He had to race against time.
