Chapter 230 - Chapter 230 230 One day at a time
Chapter 230: 230 One day at a time Chapter 230: 230 One day at a time Chen Xu put down his bowl and chopsticks, and Yang Jinxia, who had finished eating first, stood up and began to tidy up the dishes on the table with practiced ease.
He shifted uncomfortably on his chair before standing up and said, “Let me help you.”
While he held the pot of soup, noticing some soup left, he wasn’t sure what to do with it, and asked her, “Do we keep this?”
“No, just throw it away,” said Yang Jinxia, smiling up at him.
Chen Xu carried the pot to the kitchen, looked at the stove, the sink, unsure where to pour it, bending down only to find there was no trash can underneath.
Since moving here, he had never cooked, always eating nutritive meals primarily to save time, and of course, the high cost of various fresh ingredients was also a factor.
At that moment, Yang Jinxia walked in with some bowls, seeing his perplexed expression while holding the pot, she couldn’t help laughing and said, “Just pour it in the sink, the drainage has a food waste processor, don’t worry about clogging.”
Only then did Chen Xu dump the entire contents into the sink, chuckling, “It’s amazing, even in the space age, the kitchen hasn’t changed much from our time.”
“Yes, I guess the original crewmembers of the spaceship must have really longed for life on Earth,” Yang Jinxia said, putting on an apron and beginning to wash the dishes.
Chen Xu couldn’t just stand by idly, but there was no room left in front of the sink. So, he glanced outside, picked up a dishcloth, and went out to wipe down the table.
Turning around and seeing her still washing dishes, he thought about it and decided to also wipe down the chairs.
When Yang Jinxia finished with the dishes, he went inside and returned the cloth to its original place.
“I’m going to head back to my room,” he said, wiping his hands with a dry cloth, informing her.
She had already sat down on the sofa and replied, “I remember you don’t take afternoon naps.”
“I’m going to read.”
“Why not read in the living room?” Yang Jinxia gazed at him with a slightly pleading look, “I spend every day alone at home, it’s quite boring, I’d like you to keep me company. I won’t distract you.”
Chen Xu, picturing her spending each day idly at home, couldn’t bear to refuse and replied, “Alright then.” He sat on the sofa, turned on the screen, and started reading.
Yang Jinxia sat at the other end of the sofa, pulling her feet up and also stared at the screen, occasionally glancing at Chen Xu’s face.
Neither spoke, and the living room was very quiet, filled only with the sound of each other’s breathing.
Chen Xu felt an unusual calm, a sense of peace and warmth filled his heart.
……
In the afternoon, inside the cockpit, Chen Xu still sat in the same spot, staring at the screen with his eyes occasionally scanning the time displayed in the bottom right corner.
Three eleven.
“This is the sixteenth time you’ve been distracted since this afternoon, a three hundred percent increase from your usual rate,” the voice of Taichu suddenly spoke up.
“I was just checking the time. If you kept quiet, I wouldn’t be distracted,” he said.
“You seem unusual this afternoon, is it because you had lunch with your wife?”
“You’ve been talking a lot today too,” Chen Xu said cautiously, glancing at the round device overhead, where the camera was located.
Taichu replied, “Part of my duty, beyond work, is to care for the captain’s emotional and life state. Humans are not machines, they cannot stay focused all the time. Keeping a constant watch helps me manage the Dawn better.”
“That’s quite a spiel. The person who configured your language module must’ve been quite the slick operator,” Chen Xu said with amusement.
After talking for a while, he continued reading.
Indeed, Taichu was right, his mind wasn’t very focused that afternoon. He often found it dreary to read for too long and frequently looked forward to the end of the workday.
He realized he was looking forward to going home. That’s why he kept checking the time.
He shook his head, trying to dispel these distracting thoughts.
Finally, it was time to leave work.
The work hours on the Dawn were much like those on Earth, except the working hours had been slightly extended. In managerial positions, one had to work at least ten hours a day.
By the time he finished work, it was already seven o’clock.
When he reached his home door, he felt inexplicably nervous. Opening the door and seeing the busy figure in the kitchen, a warm feeling surged in his heart.
“You’re back,” came the sound of frying from the kitchen. “Dinner isn’t ready yet, but there’s some fruit on the table. Have some to tide you over.”
“It’s okay, I’m not very hungry,” said Chen Xu, setting down his things and walking to the kitchen doorway. Seeing two more dishes yet to be cooked, he asked, “Need help?”
“No thanks, just wait outside.”
Seeing that she insisted on cooking by herself, he didn’t push and simply stood watching. Her movements were clumsy, obviously inexperienced, but she was proceeding methodically without forgetting to add any seasoning.
He considered himself semi-professional in cooking skills. Just watching her cook, he knew the results wouldn’t be too bad.
As she finished each dish, he helped carry them out and set the table. When the last dish was completed, they sat down to start dinner.
“How is it?” Yang Jinxia looked at him expectantly.
Chen Xu tasted each dish and finally nodded, “Pretty good.”
She looked somewhat disappointed, “So, not good enough.”
“For someone who’s hardly ever cooked, this is quite good. When I started cooking, I was much worse than you.”
“I appreciate that, but I know you’re just trying to comfort me. I’ll work on improving,” she said.
Chen Xu replied, “You really don’t have to. I’m not picky about food.”
She said, “Here, the only thing I can do for you is this. I can’t be much help with anything else.”
Chen Xu put down his chopsticks and said, “Actually, you don’t have to be so nice to me.”
Her expression became puzzled. “If I’m not good to you, then who should I be good to? Or perhaps, you’d prefer me to find another man?”
Chen Xu was momentarily lost for words, unable to bring himself to agree against his will.
“If one day we can return to Earth, go back to the way things were, I promise not to interfere with your life again. But here, where there are no other humans, just the two of us, I hope you can stay by my side and be happy, taking each day as it comes,” she said, placing a piece of meat into his bowl. “Even if you have reservations, it’s okay, as long as you stay with me.”
Chen Xu looked at the few dishes on the table and couldn’t help but sigh.
