Chapter 227 - Chapter 227 227 Meet Up
Chapter 227: 227 Meet Up Chapter 227: 227 Meet Up Chen Xu watched as the progress bar on the screen reached one hundred percent, signifying that the artificial intelligence that had accompanied him for the past month had completely vanished from this world.
“Main program reset complete, esteemed acting captain, Artificial Intelligence Taichu at your service.” It was still that familiar voice, only now it spoke in a stilted tone.
Chen Xu gave the command, “Disable the main cannon’s charging state and cancel the first level combat readiness.”
“It has been disabled.”
He looked at the main control board which showed that the main cannon had entered sleep mode and the alarm inside the cockpit also ceased. He continued to order, “Open the main cabin door and let the other party in.”
Taichu reported, “The main cabin door is opening. The approaching vessel is decelerating.”
He asked, “How long will the docking process take?”
“Between one and two hours.”
To prevent any mishaps, Chen Xu remained in the cockpit, watching the entire process of the spacecraft landing on the Dawnbreaker through the screen.
After the main cabin door closed, he saw from the monitor that the hatch of the other ship had opened. A person in a spacesuit walked down, and through the transparent helmet, it was clear to see her features–Who else could it be but Yang Jinxia?
“It really is you.”
Chen Xu sighed in his heart. Of the three women, she was the last one he hoped to encounter in his dreams. Yet, against his wishes, it was she who had agreed to his confession.
On the other hand, had she rejected him then, he wouldn’t have been able to participate in this special event and would have missed a great opportunity.
Because of this, his emotions were very complex.
He walked toward the cockpit and said, “Take me over, let’s go welcome our new friend.”
Taichu reminded him, “You are the acting captain, you should be cautious and not meet the other party in person.”
“It’s okay, I believe she has no ill intentions.”
He sat in the zero-gravity transfer capsule and half an hour later, he arrived near the main cabin door. The space here was enormous, with corridors tens of meters high and twenty to thirty meters wide.
He went to the door between the entrance to the main cabin and the unloading area and had Taichu open it. Amidst the rumbling sound of the opening door, he saw Yang Jinxia who had removed her helmet, with 2003, the vacuum cleaner-shaped robot, following beside her.
“I’ve finally found you.” Yang Jinxia, clad in a thick spacesuit with her hair neatly coiled, looked at him, her eyes twinkling with joy.
“You…”
Chen Xu felt as if scalded by her gaze and looked away, wanting to say something, but then feeling that anything he said would be superfluous.
A month ago, they were separated by over a dozen light-years. He had thought that by the end of the dream, they would no longer meet. Yet unexpectedly, just over thirty days later, she had sought him out.
He couldn’t imagine how she had done it. If it had been him, just the distance alone would have been daunting, and he would not even have entertained the thought.
But she had not only thought about it, she had actually done it.
He really wanted to ask her how she accomplished it but felt it inappropriate. He wanted to talk about something else, but didn’t know what to say. After all, their relationship was a bit awkward. Too close was not suitable, but too distant was also improper.
In that moment, a multitude of emotions flooded him.
Yang Jinxia moved closer, sizing him up with a bright smile on her face, breaking the silence, “It looks like you’re doing quite well here.”
“Still not as good as you.” Chen Xu looked at the spaceship behind her, wondering if it had the capability to cross space and how she had obtained it.
Seeing his expression, Yang Jinxia knew he had misunderstood and explained, “Actually, I didn’t cover the dozen light-years by this ship.”
“Oh?” Chen Xu became even more curious about her experiences and 2003, the robot following her, and said, “Let’s go inside and talk about it, you come with me.”
Yang Jinxia followed him openly, bringing only 2003 with her while leaving the other robots on the ship. She surveyed the immense place and asked, “It’s just you here now?”
Chen Xu replied, “Before, yes. Now there are nine hundred and ninety, who are currently receiving basic education.”
“It seems your experience this time is quite extraordinary as well.”
“It’s just good fortune.” Chen Xu thought of the previous Taichu, sighed inwardly, and changed the subject, “What’s the deal with it?” He referred to 2003 trailing behind.
Yang Jinxia said, “It has been with me all along. But how did you get here? When I woke up, I found you were gone. By the time I saw the hint, you were already over a dozen light-years away; I thought I’d never see you again in this lifetime.”
Seeing that she did not mention anything about reality, Chen Xu guessed her subconscious was affected by the dream device, which had put her into a dreaming state and automatically accepted some settings, making her somewhat different from her usual self.
However, her words still surprised him. Did she mean that she had returned to the world of her last dream, continuing the timeline from her previous dream?
He said vaguely, “I don’t know either, when I woke up, I was already here.”
“That’s strange.” Yang Jinxia’s brows furrowed deeply, the question evidently troubling her for quite some time.
While speaking, Chen Xu had already taken her into the teleportation cabin. After they were seated, he explained, “I am the acting captain of this spaceship, so I need to go back to the cockpit to keep watch, to avoid any accidents.”
Yang Jinxia nodded, offering no objections.
After both of them and the robot were seated, the teleportation chamber started to activate.
“What happened afterward?” Chen Xu continued the previous conversation. Not speaking would feel even more awkward; finding a topic to chat about would make time pass more quickly.
Yang Jinxia briefly recounted her own experiences.
Chen Xu listened, thoroughly engrossed, interjecting with questions from time to time.
In the second dream, he had been conscious for less than half of the time, leaving many mysteries in his heart. Even returning to reality, he hadn’t had the chance to thoroughly question her. Now, at last, he could unravel these mysteries.
Yang Jinxia didn’t overdramatize, but her story still captivated Chen Xu deeply. The idea of dismantling humanity’s greatest stronghold to make robots, such a do-or-die determination, impressed him.
If it were him, he might not have been able to make such a decisive choice. He would always be thinking about the aftermath of the war, how to survive, how to develop, and so on.
He also asked specifically about the origins of the alien beasts and the history of the humans on that planet. Coupled with the data he had seen in the shelter, it seemed he had solved one of the puzzles in his heart.
Then, Yang Jinxia spoke of the great battle with the alien beasts. After passing through that black vortex, they discovered it was a wormhole, and on the other side was a desolate planet.
He now understood that this was how she had crossed a distance of over a dozen light-years.
When he heard Yang Jinxia mention the encounter with the insect queen, his heart stirred, and he asked, “What did it look like in detail?”
Yang Jinxia commanded, “2003, project the image of the insect queen.”
“Yes, Master.” Two beams of light shone from 2003’s eyes, casting an image on the wall of the teleportation cabin.
Upon seeing it, Chen Xu knew immediately that this queen insect was of the same species as the worm that had emerged from the cube – though vastly different in size, they were too similar in appearance.
“So, it’s the insect queen that destroyed your spaceship and then landed on that planet. For some unknown reason, a wormhole appeared that connected to the human world. The source of the alien beasts invading the human world is this insect queen.”
Chen Xu pieced the entire event together, finally solving the background mystery of the “Alien Beast Invasion” world. He felt quite pleased about this.
“You seem particularly concerned about this insect queen; is there a reason for that?” Yang Jinxia suddenly asked.
He explained, “Actually, not long ago, I encountered something similar…” And so, he recounted the incident with the black cube causing a crisis on the spaceship, inserting the cube inside the ship, and then a white worm crawling out of the cube.
After listening, Yang Jinxia mused, “It seems that the original owner of that spacecraft encountered the same crisis, but they didn’t make it through. The question is, how did these black cubes come to be?”
“Who knows, the universe is so vast, filled with too many unknowns. By comparison, we are so insignificant,” Chen Xu lamented. He had been mulling over who had created the virtual dream device, why it had ended up on Earth, why he was the one to activate it, and other such questions.
The more he thought about it, the more he felt that dwelling on these issues was meaningless because he might never get the answers, or perhaps knowing the answers would be more than he could bear.
Perhaps it was better not to think about it.
“What happened then, how did you kill it?” Yang Jinxia seemed very interested in his experience and asked.
Chen Xu gave a brief account of the entire process.
Yang Jinxia said, “You must have recorded the process, right? Could you send me a copy?”
The entire spaceship was under Taichu’s monitoring, including his battle. He hesitated for a moment, not wanting to refuse her simple request and said, “I’ll create an identity ID for you later, then I’ll send it to you.”
“Thank you,” Yang Jinxia said joyfully.
“Don’t mention it.”
Yang Jinxia continued to inquire, “What happened next? Did your achievements lead you to become the acting captain?”
“You could say that, mainly because there’s no one else on the spaceship. Just me left, so it had to be me.”
“Is that really how it went?” Yang Jinxia asked back.
“Hmm?” Chen Xu paused for a moment.
“I’ve seen quite a bit of the spaceship’s records during my time onboard, luckily, I had a universal translator or I wouldn’t be able to understand them.”
Yang Jinxia started talking about seemingly unrelated matters, “Among them was a warning: when encountering other civilization’s spaceships in the universe, it’s best to strike first. That should be the Dark Forest Law, right? I guess your spaceship must have similar regulations, right?”
