Chapter 97: Mischel

The Free Bird Mercenaries spent the day preparing and packing their things. A day wasn’t a lot of time, but the group was experienced. Most of the time was spent gathering information, curing Dima’s hangover, and leaving the town without making it seem like the entire mercenary group was doing something illegal and violent.

They left Oklas one by one and regrouped outside the town where a friend in the import and export business was waiting for them with a horse-drawn carriage.

Captain Squawks was the last to leave, and when he did, he noticed a note attached to their door. He glanced around to see if the one who had left it was still around before looking at it.

’Beware the tainted crown.’

He sighed.

"Minal..." Those cryptic words could only have come from one source. The group of seers had given him a warning. Too bad he didn’t understand what it meant.

He crumpled up the note and ate it before jamming a nearby rock into the corner of the door so that only he or his mercenaries could open it.

The trip to Vorad was uneventful. Even crossing the border was easy.

Given the ruling peace, they could probably have crossed it the traditional way with some fake papers. But if the guards stationed along the border roads were the least bit present, they would notice the group’s composition.

All of them were experienced veterans. The only one who could hide that part of themselves was Mole. Lily could probably slip past without her muscles and combat skills being noticed because she was a woman.

But Damas was the size of two men even when slouched. Squawks’ broad shoulders and calloused hands were the physique of a swordsman. Hugo had to get his bow with him. And the only ones going around with the smell of alcohol and two swords were veterans.

So, they snuck across the border under the cover of darkness.

After that, another friend in the same business helped them make it to where the Torak Syndicate was holding their auction. The inglorious city of Mischel.

If you were lucky, neither poor nor rich, and moderately carefree, it was probably a decent city.

If you were a decent person, it was anything but.

On the surface, it was an ordinary city rich with trade since it wasn’t far from the Syttel border. At the same time, it was far away from the capital and the Vorad Kingdom’s rule. It was also close to the Tiabe forest. Reckless poachers and daredevils who sought to make a fortune by stealing the forest’s wealth gathered in the city.

Eventually, it turned into a den of criminals unofficially ruled by the Torak Syndicate.

Entering Mischel was both easier and trickier than crawling through a field to get across the country’s border. They could walk straight through the city gates and pay a hefty toll or wait for nightfall and scale the walls. They could also try to smuggle themselves in.

Regardless, they couldn’t use their real identities. Entering undetected was the best situation.

It was just that Damas would have trouble climbing the city wall, especially undetected. His size also made it difficult to smuggle him inside. It was a shame, but he wasn’t suitable for missions that required stealth. But he was a must-have when missions that required stealth broke down.

Eventually, a farmer coming with a full load of hay arrived not far from the city. There were a lot of horses in the city who needed food, after all.

As long as it was just Damas, it was cheaper than paying the toll. The farmer seemed used to it and accepted the coins. He even helped them bury Damas at the bottom of the carriage underneath all the hay.

Then, he urged his mules to get moving again and gently rode his cart toward Mischel.

Squawks, Lily, Dima, Hugo, and Mole hid in the grass outside the city and watched. The farmer rode up to the city guards, who stepped up as if they recognized him. Then, they handed the farmer a tiny pouch.

"Isn’t it supposed to be the other way around?" Hugo asked.

A few moments later, he got the answer to why things felt off.

The half-armored guards stuffed their arms into the hay, grabbed Damas by the ankles, and yanked him out. He was heavier than they had expected, so they didn’t get him out all the way, but that didn’t matter.

Damas hadn’t brought any gear, while the guards had their swords. He could only surrender helplessly and be hauled off to jail.

"Hmm. That’s not good," Dima pointed out.

"You don’t say." Hugo nodded.

"Well, shit." Lily glared at the back of that farmer’s head.

"Boys, it looks like we need to save two men this time," Squawks said, standing up and returning to their camp a safe distance from the city.

Damas would be safe. He had too great of a build to be killed off or injured. He was too valuable as a slave. If they were lucky, they might even find him at the auction.

"Mole, when’s the auction?" Squawks asked while they waited for the sun to set.

"Tomorrow."

"Lots of time to prepare, then."

Hugo and Dima exchanged a look. A night wasn’t a lot of time, especially now that they needed to save Damas. But who were they to oppose the Captain’s assessment?

"We wait for nightfall. We split up once we get in. Hugo, you get in position. The auction should be noticeable. Lily, Dima, you find Damas. Mole, find the people we need to look out for. If you find an opportunity...well, you know what to do. We meet up in front of the auction hall when it’s time."

Hugo nodded and rubbed the tip of his bow with his thumb. Lily nodded with a stern expression. Dima gave a thumbs-up. Mole continued sharpening his daggers without much of a change of expression.

"Perfect." Squawks nodded confidently.

"What are you going to do, Captain?" Lily asked. The plan would probably be standard. But she didn’t know what Squawks was going to do during the night and day leading up to the auction. It worried her.

"None of ya business!" Squawks said with a grin and crossed his arms.

The others looked at each other.

They might be doomed.
