Chapter 94: Cat Magazine

Nick had been worried about Nuir, but he had still needed to sleep himself and still went to bed instead of just staying up and doing nothing. He wanted to check Nuir when he woke up, so he naturally looked for him on the couch where he had left him last night.

He wasn’t there.

Nick looked in the kitchen. He wasn’t there.

The lawn and porch were empty. The toilet...? Unoccupied.

Nick frowned.

"Nuir!" He called out. Maybe Nuir was just hiding in a corner or around the corner.

He didn’t get an answer. He was about to take another lap around the house when the tetnacle grabbed his shoulder and pointed at three things.

She pointed at Nuir’s spot on the couch. She pointed at the picture of a cat in the magazine. Lastly, she pointed at the front door.

Nick’s frown deepened.

Nuir’s spot on the sofa meant Nuir. The cat meant the Midnight Panther. The front door meant out.

The combination of the three could mean multiple things.

"Did...Nuir go out and get eaten by the Midnight Panther?" He asked. It was the worst possible combination.

Fortunately, the tentacle shook its tip from side to side. No. The Midnight Panther had not turned Nuir into a midnight snack just because Nick hadn’t left a plate of sausages out for it.

"Then...Did Nuir leave to find or hunt the Midnight Panther?" Maybe Nuir wanted to prove himself or get some training. Maybe he, in less than optimal mental conditions, decided to be reckless and throw his life away since it wasn’t worth living.

Nick didn’t want to consider it, but given the circumstances, he couldn’t help it.

Fortunately, the tentacle once again shook her tip. That was not the case.

Nick tilted his head in confusion.

"Did someone die?"

The tentacle shook its tip.

"Is Nuir all right?"

A nod.

"Did the Midnight Panther kidnap Nuir?"

Finally, something that wasn’t a no. The tentacle did a wiggling motion.

"Kind of...How do you kind of kidnap someone?" He asked, mostly just thinking out loud. The tentacle didn’t have an answer to that.

"Wait, if Nuir is all right, does that mean that it wasn’t a kidnapping? Did Nuir follow the Midnight Panther into the woods or something?" He asked.

The tentacle nodded energetically. He got it right.

Nick frowned with befuddlement.

"Why?" He knew that Nuir didn’t feel at home in his house, but surely it was better than following a monster king.

The tentacle gave him a blank look. How was she supposed to know?

But at least it was the Midnight Panther. It wasn’t a rage-filled monster that would tear Nuir apart. It was an intelligent monster that appreciated sausage. It couldn’t be evil or bad.

Besides, the Lowat tribe members resembled black cats. That included Nuir.

What if it was a sense of familiarity and kinship?

Maybe Nuir was drawn to the Midnight Panther or something.

Nick tilted his head and gave a slight nod as he considered it. It wasn’t impossible. A fantasy world, power crystals, and animal people. It wasn’t strange. There were stranger things.

"I guess that means we should hold off on feeding Sosora chicken, though."

Chickens were probably as far from the Midnight Panther monster king as one could get, but if there was a connection between the Lowat tribe, which resembled felines, and the Midnight Panther, a feline, Nick didn’t want to take any chances.

He just hoped that there weren’t any boar-like tribes in the forest. If that were the case, Nick probably wouldn’t be able to eat sausage without thinking about it. He would still eat it, though.

Nick looked out at the forest.

"I guess there’s no use worrying about Nuir," He said, lost in thought.

The tentacle nodded.

Nick looked at it with narrowed eyes.

"...When we came to this world, could you influence our location?" He asked, suddenly thinking of something. He had a bunch of questions he wanted to get out, but that was teh first one.

The tentacle slowly turned toward him. She couldn’t quite tell what the tone in his voice meant. Was he displeased about ending up in the middle of a forest of scary monsters when she could have steered them toward a human settlement?

It gave a steady nod before making a small circle.

"Yes, but only to a certain degree?" Nick asked to confirm if he understood her correctly.

She nodded again, this time without the circle.

"The power crystals?" He asked.

She nodded again.

It was as he suspected.

"They’re the reason we have water and electricity?"

The tentacle nodded and pointed at itself. It wasn’t just the power crystals. It was thanks to them and her.

Nick nodded.

"Got it. Thank you. Life in this world would have been a lot more difficult without water and electricity. It would have been a lot more difficult without you..." Nick trailed off as he looked at the tentacle. He still wasn’t sure what to call her.

But even if his words had ended strangely, the tentacle could at least confirm that Nick didn’t hold a grudge for choosing a bad spot.

"You chose a great spot, Miss Tentacle," Nick added after a moment of silence as he thought about all the encounters he had experienced so far. Kai, Lora, Kavam, Sosora, Malak, Mijko, Monkey, the Midnight Panther, Yamans, the others...

If the humans outside the forest were anything like the humans he knew, he wasn’t sure they would have given him such a warm welcome.

"But you have to do something about your form. Being the only one saying anything is a little boring, you know? I was never good at holding conversations, much less being the one to drive them," Nick said with a chuckle.

The tentacle nodded excitedly. It was working hard on it. It pressed against Nick’s shoulder and neck like it was leaning against him.

"By the way, do you think I have any hopes of learning magic?" He asked suddenly.

"..." The tentacle gently stroked his back.

"Miss Tentacle?"

She continued comforting him.

Nick didn’t press.
