Chapter 80: Finding The Spot

"There!" Malak shouted suddenly, slamming his finger against the map and startling Sosora awake. After cross-referencing the maps and the guard schedule for over half an hour, Malak finally found the most likely route Tair’s kidnappers would have taken in order to disappear.

Sosora fought away the drowsiness and looked at the spot Malak pointed at. She furrowed her brow.

"That’s Orovir territory, isn’t it?" As far as she knew, the Orovir and Lowat tribes weren’t on the best of terms. Would the Orovirs really help Tair’s kidnappers get away?

"Yes. And right there, there’s a tunnel that would have taken Tair’s kidnappers underground and out of sight. If I’m right, they would have entered there and disappeared. They could have gone anywhere in the forest without anyone noticing."

Malak’s words made Sosora frown. That meant their search area had expanded from a decently big circle around the location Tair was taken out of the sky to the entire forest. The forest was approximately twenty times the size of their initial search area. If they added in the possibility of Tair’s kidnappers moving him around...

They were never finding Tair.

Malak could tell what Sosora was thinking. He was thinking the same, after all.

But it wasn’t over yet.

"If we know where they went, we can just follow their traces. They can run, but they can’t hide."

"Are you sure? They managed to slip away from the crash site without leaving any traces."

"Exactly. They were extremely careful because they knew we would scour that area like Vasr birds looking for Trajo berries. But they have no reason to even suspect that we would think they would go all the way there." Malak tapped the map again.

"After all, they aren’t on friendly terms with the Orovir tribe. There’s no way the Orovirs would let them pass." Malak grinned.

They would think the same as Sosora. Most people would think the same as Sosora. The Orovir tribe wouldn’t have helped the Lowat tribe kidnap a person of prestige from the Aer tribe.

Sosora frowned.

"Assuming you’re right...Why would the Orovir tribe help the Lowat tribe?" Sosora asked. She understood what Malak was getting at.

The Lowat tribe would be confident that they had won the psychological aspect. They would have no reason to think that anyone would pursue them from that tunnel. They would get sloppy and leave traces.

But that didn’t change the fact that the Orovir tribe had no reason to help the Lowat tribe.

Malak leaned back in his chair and stroked his chin thoughtfully. He was silent for several long moments before opening his mouth.

"I have no idea."

"?" Sosora just looked at him. He had just shown off his excellence and preparations. Yet now he was saying that he didn’t know? It didn’t add up.

Malak shrugged at Sosora’s gaze.

"I don’t have much contact with the Orovir tribe, not even second-hand. I don’t know what makes them move. Who knows, maybe they silently share the Lowat tribe’s wishes for independence. They just don’t want to take a stance against the other tribes."

"..."

"Of course, the Lowat tribe could have paid for their cooperation and silence. I know they like valuables a little more than some others."

"..."

"There’s also the possibility of the Lowat tribe having something on the Orovir tribe. Maybe the Orovir tribe did something in the past that only the Lowat tribe knows about."

"...It could be anything," Sosora concluded with a tired face.

"Yup. The only way to find out is to talk with them."

"Will they talk to us? Will they answer our questions truthfully?" Sosora was happy that they had a possible lead, and she didn’t want to be pessimistic. But she felt like she had to grab the reins and control the situation by making Malak consider everything another step before he was swept away by the excitement of figuring out the Lowat tribe’s route.

"Yes and no, I guess?" Malak answered with a shrug. "But is there a need to talk to them?" He countered.

Sosora furrowed her brow.

"We’re going to follow the kidnappers’ traces, no?" Malak clarified.

"Ah." Sosora’s head rose once in understanding.

They didn’t need the Orovir tribe’s help. It would be nice. But it would also only last within the Orovir tribe’s territory. They were following the traces left behind by the kidnappers. They didn’t need to talk to anyone for that.

But they would need help from someone a little better at tracking than they were. They had to get Issa and Tilo again before sneakily making their way over to the location Malak had marked.

If they were seen, the Lowat tribe could hear about their movements and sweep their traces. So, they had to get there undetected if possible.

Fortunately, the Lowat tribe had already paved the way and shown a route through and across the territories that would let them get there undetected. Sosora asked Issa and Tilo to gather at the crash site.

Anyone who heard or saw would just think that they were too stubborn to give up or look elsewhere. If the Lowat tribe were keeping track of their movements, they would rest easy knowing that they still weren’t any closer to Tair’s whereabouts.

Malak, Sosora, Issa, and Tilo followed the path he had drawn while scouring their surroundings for traces. Unfortunately, they didn’t find any. But they did not see anyone else during their trek.

They had confirmed the veracity of the escape route. And finally, they stood in front of the camouflaged entrance to the Orovir tunnel.

It was a good thing they had Issa with them. She was the only one who noticed the inconsistencies in the foliage and soil covering the trapdoor that would take them underground. Without her, they could have searched for hours before finding it and likely been discovered in the process.

The four exchanged looks. Having Monkey or someone strong with them would have been comforting.

But it was too late to go back now. They had to get a move on before the Lowat tribe made sure to wipe their tracks.

Malak pulled open the trapdoor, and Sosora jumped in. She whistled, signaling that it was clear. The other three followed.

Stones that gave off a soft orange light lined the ceiling.

It wasn’t just clear inside the tunnel. It was extremely clear. There was not a sign of anyone in any of the three paths.

However, before they could think of where to go, footsteps came from one of the tunnels. Only a moment later, a surprised Lowat tribe warrior turned around the corner.
