My Eldritch Horror Wife Followed Me To Another World -
Chapter 77: Why
Chapter 77: Why
Nick looked at the sleeping Nuir. He had bundled him up and let him sleep on the couch during the night. Nick wasn’t worried about Nuir trying to leave since the tentacle could stop him. The worry he had was how Nuir would react to the tentacle.
Fortunately, it seemed like Nuir hadn’t tried anything.
It even looked like he had slept through the night without so much as moving from the spot.
But the sausages and stir-fried vegetables Nick had put on the table beside him were gone.
"Good to know that your appetite’s fine, kid," Nick said as he walked past the ’sleeping’ Nuir and into the kitchen to grab something to drink. He barely managed to resist the urge to ruffle the tuft of hair sticking out from under the blanket.
The basement door was closed.
Nick grabbed three plates and filled them with food from yesterday before popping them into the microwave one at a time. While they were spinning around to the humming sound, Nick took the opportunity to check on what he had left out for the Midnight Panther.
As expected, the pots and pans were licked clean, and there was no trace of the sausages he had left behind. The vegetables were untouched, though.
Nick wasn’t surprised. Cats were carnivores, after all. They didn’t eat vegetables. He grabbed everything and filled the sink with dishes.
After a while, he had a sink of dishes soaking, and three steaming plates of food.
"Kid, I can hear your stomach rumbling from over here. This plate is for you if you want it." Nick could tell that Nuir was wary and cautious. It didn’t help that he was a human.
But he hoped Nuir had decided to trust him at least a little.
Nick could almost feel Nuir hesitate beneath his blanket. Eventually, however, the lump under the blanket moved and gently slipped down from the couch before cautiously hugging the wall over to the kitchen.
Nuir stopped at the entrance to the kitchen and looked warily at Nick.
"Why..." Nuir’s voice was hoarse and strained.
"Hmm?" Nick raised an eyebrow. He couldn’t tell if Nuir couldn’t or wouldn’t finish his question.
"Why...did you help me?" Nuir eventually squeezed out, his hand clutching the doorframe.
"To be honest, it wasn’t just me. But I guess for a reason similar to the one that made you come here when you were desperate." Nick looked at Nuir.
Nuir didn’t trust him. But he had still come to Nick’s house when he had nowhere else to go. Nick couldn’t let Nuir go anywhere else, not with a clean conscience. Nuir had wanted to kill him the first time they met.
But that was just misdirected anger from a kid who didn’t know any better and who was being abused by his tribe. Nick couldn’t hold it against him. It was his responsibility and duty as an adult to look past it and help Nuir.
"..." Nuir stood still at the entrance and just looked at Nick. He had asked the question, but he wasn’t sure what answer he had been expecting. He also wasn’t sure what to think of Nick’s answer.
"Nuir, I know we didn’t get off to the best start, what with you trying to kill me and all. But that’s in the past. You came to my house bloodied and bruised. Of course, I’m going to help you." Nick looked straight into Nuir’s eyes to try to convey his sincerity.
Nuir avoided Nick’s heavy gaze. It felt like it was the first time in so long that someone didn’t look at him with scorn and loathing. He wasn’t sure what to think of it.
"Don’t think too much. You’ve lost a lot of blood. Eat." Nick pushed the table closer to Nuir.
Slowly, Nuir walked over and sat down at Nick’s kitchen table. He saw Nick eat with a knife and fork. He also saw that there was another set on the table. He reached for them while looking at Nick out of the corner of his eyes, searching for a reaction in case Nick hadn’t put them there for him.
After all, there was another plate on the table.
Nick just gave a slow nod to indicate that it was okay without startling him. It was like dealing with a wild animal. He wanted to say that Nuir didn’t need to use the utensils if he didn’t want to. The others at the sausage party hadn’t bothered, and there was no need to obsess over it.
But he could tell that Nuir would take it the wrong way. He wouldn’t take it as Nick not forcing him to use the utensils. He would take it as Nick telling him not to use them.
So, Nick stayed silent and let Nuir eat his fill. He ate slowly at first as he struggled with the knife and fork, but he eventually figured it out by studying how Nick held and used his cutlery. And as he ate, he let the taste of food distract him, so he ate quicker after the first few bites.
Then, as he reached the end of what he had on his plate, he slowed down again. He didn’t want it to end. At the same time, he was getting full. But he didn’t know when he would be getting food again, so he didn’t want to stop eating. It was a conflicted situation.
"Don’t worry, kid, there’s more where that came from. Just let me know when you’re hungry again, and I’ll get you something to eat, alright? There’s no need to worry." Just telling him not to worry would hardly do anything. Nick needed to show it with his actions. But for now, that was all he could do.
Nuir gave a tiny nod as he savored the last couple of bites.
Nick was also done and not making any moves on the last plate. Nick noticed Nuir glancing at the third plate curiously.
If it wasn’t for Nick, and it wasn’t for him, who was it for?
"I’m not sure if you’re ready, but do you want me to introduce you to...the third individual in this house?" Nick was never sure how to address the tentacle monster in his basement.
Nuir hesitated.
