My Eldritch Horror Wife Followed Me To Another World -
Chapter 75: Wormy Brat
Chapter 75: Wormy Brat
It was a restless night for both Malak and Sosora. Neither regretted it for a moment. So what if they didn’t get a wink until the sun rose again? They felt more energized than ever. Besides, it was an unusually short night, wasn’t it?
They just lay there next to each other, blinked once, and then it was over, wasn’t it? How were they supposed to have gotten any rest in that short time?
When the sun rose and light started creeping into Malak’s room, the two realized that they had to get up despite lying down a moment ago. They didn’t want to. However, they couldn’t forget Tair just because they were caught up in their own emotions.
The couple sat up and only realized that they were holding hands when they tried to stand up. They pulled apart like they had touched fire. And like any child new to the feeling of touching something hot, they must touch it again to make sure that it was actually hot.
Malak’s and Sosora’s hands sought each other out again like they had a will of their own.
Sosora looked at Malak. Malak looked Sosora in the eyes.
"We...should get going then," Sosora said eventually.
"Yeah, I suppose we should," Malak nodded. Neither of them moved for several long seconds.
Sosora took a deep breath. Just being with Malak was nice.
But enough was enough.
"I’ll check if Tair has returned." Sosora unwillingly let go of Malak and stepped out. Malak was a few steps behind her and left his house. He watched her take to the sky with a dreamy expression.
"Ahem." However, someone cleared their throat from not far away and broke Malak’s dream. Malak turned to the source and raised an eyebrow.
"Elder Atarak? What can I do for you?" He was a little surprised to see Atarak outside his home. Usually, Atarak would stay as far away from Elder Kobo’s corner of the village as possible.
Elder Atarak didn’t answer. Instead, he looked at Malak with narrowed eyes.
"Sosora of the Aer tribe stayed the night, didn’t she?" He said it like it was a question when he knew the obvious answer. Malak frowned.
"She did."
"I hope you know that any ’fraternizing’ with members of other tribes is forbidden, young Malak," Atarak said with a hint of judgment and reproach in his voice, clearly insinuating toward the possible inappropriate aspects of their relationship.
Naturally, Malak was aware. It was an agreement between the tribes. Friends in other tribes were fine. More than friends wasn’t fine.
It didn’t happen often. Malak couldn’t remember such an occasion in his lifetime. He did not know of any inter-tribal relationships. It wasn’t exactly strange. With the defining physical features of each tribe, members of the tribes usually preferred partners from the same tribe.
But he had never heard of that agreement being enforced. So, he hadn’t bothered thinking about it when his and Sosora’s relationship deepened. After all, there was nothing wrong with love.
However, he had a feeling that Elder Atarak did not hold the same sentiment.
Malak glared at Atarak.
"Soso is just a friend. I would appreciate it if you don’t spout nonsense this early in the morning. You’re ruining a perfectly good sunrise, Elder Atarak," Malak spat out before walking past the elder with a harrumph.
Elder Atarak’s pale eyes narrowed as he followed Malak with his gaze. He clenched his fist so hard that cracking sounds could be heard.
"Wormy brat. You and Elder Kobo both...Count your days." Elder Atarak turned around to leave, his eyes full of burning malice.
Malak left the Bawin tribe’s village. Sosora said she was going to check if Tair had returned, but the odds were that he was still missing. Instead of just sitting around and waiting for Sosora to return with information he could already assume was true, Malak decided to be productive.
He could take a lap around the village and see who would be willing to help him, but not many would be willing, and even fewer would be helpful. So, he decided to make the most of his few connections and pay a visit first to their neighbors, the Seg tribe.
Tair wouldn’t have gone missing without leaving traces behind. Unless he was someone like Nick, who could appear without a trace, of course.
That meant they could locate him if they could find his trail. He would need someone good at that.
Issa wasn’t necessarily an expert tracker, but she was a Seg and close to nature. She would notice disturbances in the vegetation that the others would have missed. It would have been great if she could bring along someone more experienced, but that was unlikely.
After asking and receiving Issa’s help, Malak still stopped by the Gezercher tribe. There, he asked Mijko and Tilo for help.
Mijko was ’busy’ apparently. Malak was doubtful, but the Gezercher who informed him of that told him that it was because she had caught Monkey’s attention. Malak could only nod with pity. He had heard what happened to Sosora when she caught Monkey’s attention.
It looked like it would be a while until they saw Mijko again.
But Tilo showed up, even if only after he heard that Issa was there. He wanted to find a chance to apologize for yesterday. His attempt at a joke had only made Issa more worried, after all.
Finally, they headed over to the Aer tribe, where Sosora had already started looking for Tair, who, as expected, hadn’t returned during the night.
Together, the four of them started looking for Tair. He was a member of the Aer tribe wouldn’t have walked since he didn’t have a reason to walk as Sosora did. He would have flown. That meant he would have taken the direct way toward the center of the forest.
Sosora could fly and take the same route. The other three had to scour the forest floor and fight their way through thorny vegetation to look for any traces of Tair returning to the ground. Well, Malak had to, at least. The other two didn’t struggle.
