Chapter 73: Obvious Answer

As steadily as their gazes turned to Nuir, they once again turned to Nick. The question on everyone’s minds was the same. Surprisingly, the answer was also the same.

Nuir couldn’t go with any of the others. It would only invite trouble and lead to misunderstandings and rumors working against them. But they couldn’t leave him in the forest or hand him back to the Lowat tribe.

He needed a safe place free from the politics of the different tribes, a place where the Lowat tribe wouldn’t come looking for him, or a place where he would be safe even if they did come looking for him. He needed a place that didn’t have to worry about the Lowat tribe accusing them of anything.

Nick did have to be a little worried. The Lowat tribe could accuse him of kidnapping Nuir and any other heinous crimes.

But unlike the other tribes, he didn’t have any reason to do that. If he just said that he was harboring an injured and traumatized kid until they recovered enough to make a decision for themselves, there was no reason to doubt him. The Gezercher tribe was still keeping their eyes on him, at least officially.

And if the Lowat tribe didn’t trust the Gezercher tribe for whatever reason, they were free to watch the Outsider on their own. It was just...

There were apparently rumors going around that the monster kings had fought close to the Outsider’s home. The Gezercher tribe was pulling out because of that. They didn’t want to get caught up in it when the monster kings fought each other or the Outsider.

If the Lowat tribe insisted, they were free to do so.

But they had already gotten a bad reputation for throwing away the lives of their members when testing the monster kings and trying to understand how Nick lived in the center of the forest without them attacking him.

They had to be very careful with what they chose to do.

For those reasons, Nick was the perfect candidate. He was the only one who could do a good job keeping Nuir safe. He knew it himself.

He also knew that there weren’t many daylight hours left. The others had to get going soon. They didn’t have all the time in the world to sit and discuss the best course of action.

"Alright," He said with a sigh and a nod. "I guess I’ll look after him. But, just so you all know, I have no experience taking care of children."

Kavam smiled and patted him on the shoulder.

"No one ever does."

The others encouraged him and went over some details before starting to leave one by one.

Nick looked at Nuir, sleeping without a care in the world, with his head resting on Nick’s lap.

’At least he’s not a baby,’ Nick thought to himself. Nuir could walk, talk, think, and go to the bathroom alone. It could have been worse.

Now, the only thing he had to deal with was Nuir’s personality that had been scarred by both the death of his mother and the treatment from his uncle.

The first time Nick met Nuir, Nuir was trying to kill him. The second time, Nuir was trying to flee with tears in his eyes from the scary human and the scary bear cub.

’Third time’s the charm or something.’

It had to mean something that Nuir had fled to the center of the forest, to Nick’s house. He wouldn’t have done that unless he wanted something from Nick or trusted Nick enough.

Nick looked around. The others had cleaned up the worst before they left. The fire’s embers were left untouched, spreading warmth and orange light onto Nick and Nuir. The second bowl of stir-fried vegetables had ended up neglected and was starting to get cold. There was a pile of cooked and uncooked sausages.

Nick figured he might as well finish the sausages while there was still some fire left. The only other options would be to come back another time or give them to the Midnight Panther. Neither alternative was something Nick wanted to do.

What if the Midnight Panther didn’t show up? It would be a waste of sausage. Nick was also pretty sure that the Midnight Panther, just like the rest of them, preferred the taste of cooked sausage.

Nick bundled up another blanket for Nuir to use as a pillow and gently moved to cook sausage.

The sun was still some time from sinking down over the horizon, but the tall trees had started blocking its light, shedding some shade onto Nick’s clearing. But the light from his porch and the fire was more than enough for him to cook.

While cooking with an absent mind that hadn’t quite caught up with the situation that had unfolded after Nuir crashed the party, Nick glanced at the tree he had felled.

He had been planning to ask for help to move it since he couldn’t do it on his own, but he hadn’t gotten the opportunity. However, now that he looked at it, he understood why he had forgotten about it. It already looked like it was going to be devoured by the grass and ground around it.

He was surprised.

Fallen trees would sooner or later be reclaimed by nature, but he didn’t think it would happen in a matter of days.

’Fantasy world, I guess?’ He thought to himself uncertainly. It was the only thing that could explain it.

’But if things grow that quickly...’ Nick’s eyes narrowed as he scanned his lawn.

There was definitely place for a garden where he could grow vegetables like the ones he had used to make the stir-fry. If the vegetables grew as quickly as the ground next to the tree, it didn’t even need to be big.

He glanced at Nuir.

He also had a pair of helping hands to help tend to the garden as soon as Nuir recovered.

Maybe things weren’t so bad, after all.
