My Eldritch Horror Wife Followed Me To Another World -
Chapter 57: Pairs
Chapter 57: Pairs
Basla’s eyes were more than sharp enough to see through the darkness of the shadows in the corner of his room, where a person too large for the room stood. He reached for the dagger on the stand he had been about to kick.
"There’s no need for that. I’m just here to talk," The man said, taking a step forward, putting his glossy, orange, and black striped fur on display. He held up his hands in a show of peaceful intent.
Basla could tell. It didn’t matter whether he grabbed the dagger or not. He didn’t stand a chance. The man in front of him was a warrior from the Asa tribe.
"W-what do you want?" Basla asked, trying to quell the tremors of his mouth.
"A chat," The man said.
Basla nodded. He could do a chat.
"Good." The man nodded and smiled, sending chills down Basla’s spine.
"I heard about your desires, Basla. You wanted autonomy, right? I completely understand. You see, my tribe has that autonomy. We can do whatever we want, and everyone else just doesn’t even care to know about what we’re doing. Is that what you want?"
Basla hesitated before nodding.
"Then, do you know how to get that?"
Basla slowly shook his head.
"Of course, you don’t. If you knew, you wouldn’t be wasting your time with petty squabbles, arguments, and words."
Basla couldn’t help but feel humiliated. The man from the Asa tribe was looking down on him, mocking him. But he was right.
Basla’s attempts had failed.
"It’s fear. Could Sosora have done that if she feared the Lowat tribe? If she feared you?" The man asked.
Basla’s eyes slowly changed. His fear was gradually replaced by something else. The Asa man’s smile deepened.
That was what he wanted to see.

"You called this a dice, right?" Mijko asked, throwing the white cube covered with tiny black dots on the board again, rolling a three.
"Yes." Nick nodded, handing her another for her to throw. She threw it and got another three.
"What’s their purpose?" She asked with a frown. She still picked the dice up from the board Nick had set up to throw them on. She rolled them again, getting a pair of fours.
"Whatever you want, really. They can be used for board games or just simple dice games. You can make up your own rules about what different combinations of the numbers are worth. You can compete with others." Nick shrugged.
He had taken them out because he was bored. He had just been rolling them to try and get a pair of sixes when Mijko suddenly popped out and said the ban on visiting him was lifted. Then, before he could ask how it had gone, she pointed at what he was doing and asked about it.
"Compete, you say?" She raised an interested eyebrow.
"Mhm. Let’s say the numbers are the value. Pair of six is the highest, while a pair of ones is the lowest." Nick held out his hand for the dice. Mijko handed them over.
"I’ll go first," He said, dropping the dice on the board. They rolled and clacked out a three and a four.
"Seven. If you get a number higher than that, you win." Nick had barely finished his sentence before Mijko grabbed the dice and rolled a five and a four.
"Like that?" She asked.
"Yes—"
"What do I win?" She asked eagerly, leaning forward.
She was getting a little too close, so Nick pushed her back with a finger to the forehead.
"Nothing. The glory, I guess. That was just a demonstration."
Mijko turned sullen, disappointed that she didn’t win anything.
Nick wanted to do something about it, but he had noticed the way she rolled pairs twice on her first two rolls. He wasn’t sure if she was lucky, or if she was just playing him for a fool.
He doubted the fact that dice didn’t exist in this world. Even if the ones he was used to didn’t exist, something similar surely had to.
It was possible that Mijko was aware of it and was planning to fleece him.
He was not going to suggest making bets. He didn’t even know what to bet. He didn’t think Mijko would be very interested in any cash he had lying around. Food maybe?
’No.’ Nick shook his head. No gambling.
"You can always play with your friends," He suggest with a shrug.
Mijko’s eyes slowly widened before lighting up entirely.
"That’s a good idea!" She said excitedly. She looked at the dice with a hesitant expression.
"Can...How are dice made?" She asked. The two that Nick had were smooth, glossy, and Mijko did not understand how the black dots had come to be.
Nick had a feeling she had wanted to ask for the dice themselves but changed her mind in the last second.
"These two..." He started, looking at his dice. "Probably can’t be made here." ’Here’ being this world. He doubted plastic existed in a fantasy world, after all.
"But I know they can be made from any material, really. You just need a well-balanced and symmetrical cube. You can use wood or ivory. Stone probably works as well, but it might be difficult to make. Clay?" Nick crossed his arms and tilted his head thoughtfully as his mind spun about the possible materials that could be used to create dice. He didn’t know he was so creative.
It almost seemed like anything could be made into dice. They were such a simple design.
That was why he missed when Mijko suddenly froze and looked behind him in horror. Nick only noticed something was wrong when something appeared between him and the warm sunlight hitting his lawn. It was too close for it to be clouds.
He frowned. He hadn’t noticed anything until it was right behind him. But now, he could feel a warm breath hit the back of his head.
Slowly, he leaned back and looked up. A furry mouth filled with glistening white teeth greeted him.
