Chapter 112: Budding Fight

Malak didn’t answer. He didn’t like the way Nick was talking to him like he knew everything when he didn’t know anything. But he reluctantly had to admit that Nick made at least one good point.

He should not leave Sosora’s side.

In the first place, it wasn’t realistic for him to do that, either. He wasn’t some great warrior or explorer who could search all of the world’s corners for something to restore Sosora’s vision. Firstly, he was a member of the tribes.

The Bawin tribe wasn’t that different from humans. But no one would look at someone from the Bawin tribe and think they were human, especially in the three kingdoms around Tiabe. He wouldn’t be able to set foot in them without people recognizing him as being from the tribes.

With the volatile past between the three kingdoms and the tribes of Tiabe, Malak would be lucky if he even found a stone to overturn before being hunted down and killed or captured.

He would have to go past the three kingdoms if he wanted to look personally. But that was incredibly difficult and dangerous.

No, his only real option would be to delegate the search to people he could trust while he stayed by Sosora’s side. He might not even have to go beyond Tiabe to find what he was looking for.

The forest was vast and hid many secrets.

Nick’s and Malak’s conversation lasted a little while, and by the time they finished, Sosora was ready to return home. An invisible weight had been lifted from her shoulders by the food and company. In its place, only fatigue and exhaustion remained. She needed sleep and a proper night’s rest.

Malak took her home. It was also getting late. They had to leave early if they wanted to make it back before darkness crept in. It wouldn’t affect Sosora much, but if Malak also couldn’t see anything, they would be in trouble.

When they left, Nick asked Mijko and Muhso about the situation in the forest. It had been more than a week since the tribal meeting where Chief Matranda silently declared war on the Lowat tribe.

Fortunately, or maybe worryingly, not much had happened yet. There had been several skirmishes between the Aer and Lowat tribes, with several wounded. At least no one had died yet.

But it seemed like the Lowat tribe had prepared for something like this. They only moved around when they knew they could handle anything other than an all-out attack by the Aer tribe, whether it be in small groups during the night or large groups during the day.

They had also seemingly stocked up on plenty of resources and supplies so that they wouldn’t need to leave the safe confines of their village more than absolutely necessary.

The Aer tribe, on the other hand, had wasted years disarming themselves and making themselves less of a threat to the other tribes. Since losing Tair, rage had carried them, making them aggressive and impulsive.

If not for Chief Matranda keeping a cool head and reigning in the younger warriors, the Aer tribe would have likely already fallen to the provocations and launched an all-out attack on the Lowat tribe’s village.

But Basla’s words could make even a non-genius figure out that a full-scale attack by the Aer tribe was exactly what he wanted.

No one could figure out why.

The Aer tribe might be a little rusty and past its prime, but each warrior was still highly capable and capable of flight. In most scenarios, an Aer warrior had the advantage over the other tribes. If they were ever worried about losing, they could just take to the sky.

Not all Aer warriors were archers, but several of them were for the sole reason that it was a superior combo.

They could shoot from higher up than arrows shot from the ground could reach, and their arrows would have the force of gravity behind them. Their enemies could hide, but they couldn’t run.

The Lowat tribe, while as landlocked as the other tribes, were usually too short to use bows powerful enough to reach the winged warriors. They could hide and sneak around easily, and they were good at close-quarters combat. So, the Aer warriors had to be careful on the ground, but they didn’t have to be on the ground, so it wasn’t an issue.

Still, Basla and his warriors wanted to fight.

Chief Matranda and his warriors also wanted to fight. Monkey wanted some action to rouse his dusty old bones as well.

If not for Chief Matranda’s and Monkey’s caution, and the representatives and chiefs of the other tribes trying to de-escalate the situation and prevent casualties, fights on a larger scale would already have broken out.

But all things considered, the situation in the forest had already reached a point where most tribes had set a curfew and prohibited their members, especially youngsters, from leaving the villages.

Nick had trouble grasping the precise details of the situation since there were many names, locations, and tribes he was still unfamiliar with.

The Lowat, Jakka, Uaya, and Vedel tribes seemed to be carrying on a loose alliance, but the Lowat tribe was the only one actively fighting with the Aer tribe. On the other side, the Gezercher and Ursa tribes were the only ones openly supporting the Aer tribe, but they weren’t actively participating, either, at least not officially.

’Like a cold war, then.’ Nick thought to himself.

Both sides were aware that once fighting fully broke out, it would be almost impossible to stop it. Not even Basla wanted to throw away all of his tribe members.

A king was no king without his people.

But it was steadily getting hotter. It was only a matter of time before the powder keg was hot enough to explode.

Nick was worried, not for himself but for his friends. It was unlikely that anyone would recklessly come to target him. Even if they did, Miss Tentacle would protect him.

It was the others who were in danger, recklessly coming to visit him whenever they wanted, regardless of the looming situation of the forest.
