Chapter 67: Felix & Anne(3)
Chapter 67: Felix & Anne(3)
But the count couldn’t even be sad about her death because he was so tired of dealing with her. He was rather happy about her dying. And, he thanked that baby for releasing him from that burden.
After making sure the baby was doing fine, the count proceeded with his plan and dumped the baby at Felix’s door.
Felix ended up accepting the baby as his sister after that. The count didn’t want Felix to know it was his child. That’s why he wrote a letter like that, pulling his crazy mother who was rumoured to have run away. He tried his best to make sense of the events in that letter and convince that boy into taking that child in.
So, that’s how Felix had been raising his own child all these years.
A child he never knew he had. And a kid that was born from the most traumatic experience in his life.
Anne...was his daughter.
They were not siblings.
But, father and daughter.
For Felix, it felt like the world was collapsing.
He didn’t really feel any resentment toward Anne.
He still loved her because it was not her fault.
But he was just shaken by the truth.
She was born from this mess.
He had a slight disappointment deep in his heart. He didn’t know who he was disappointed in or about what.
He was confused.
Sometimes, he wished he never knew this truth...
Maybe things wouldn’t have gotten this complicated and he would have lived in his happy fantasy.
It’s tiring and was draining him emotionally whenever he thought about this.
He wanted a break but couldn’t stop thinking about it to even close his eyes for a moment.
His only way to let out the pain and frustration was crying in Asher’s arms, listening to his comforts that distracted him.
Stuck in between his own confusions, Felix still had one more question with a realisation.
Did Anne know about her birth?
If she knew what happened to him, then...she must know about her birth too because it’s all related and happened at the same time.
It’s confusing enough that he didn’t even know how Anne got to know he was kidnapped and was about to be sold by those counts. When that happened, she wasn’t even born. So how did she know about it?
He had asked her about that before but she never gave him a proper answer which eventually led to Felix just giving up.
He wanted to sit down with Anne and have a proper talk about this.
But he didn’t have the courage.
He felt sick about this whole thing.
To know this little girl he adored so much was born after this...
He didn’t know...
He was confused about what he was feeling.
Lost? Sad? Disappointed? Angry? Disgusted?
It felt like he felt all those things. But toward who? About what? He had no idea. It all just directed toward him.
He hated himself, he was disappointed in himself and was disgusted.
It made him sad that Anne was also a victim here. He was sympathetic toward Anne but not for himself.
He couldn’t bring himself to feel anything for himself. He was too worried about other things.
Actually, he would have preferred if Anne was actually the daughter of his crazy mother. Rather than being his own daughter, because he might not be a suitable person to be a parent even if he could be a brother.
It’s heavy and hard for him to accept.
And, he was afraid to think anything because he felt guilty about the way he was looking at this whole thing.
He wanted someone to tell him he was doing the right thing if he thinks or says something.
He was afraid his own words would be wrong.
He wanted help.
Desperately...
...
"Are you feeling okay now, duke?"
Asher asked as he felt the duke was relaxing and seemingly calming down.
After some silence, the duke retreated away from Asher, his face all red and messed up from all the crying.
It was definitely embarrassing for Felix, but he was too tired to care about it. He actually felt better after crying. To think someone else knew about this and now could assist him with reassurance was enough for him to feel a bit better.
"Asher, what will you do if you were me? Should I just keep this a secret? Or...should I talk with Anne? Is this too early for that?"
Asher actually had no idea. It was hard to put himself in the duke’s place when it was this complicated. So, thinking about a solution was hard too.
"I am sorry. But I really have no idea."
Asher said honestly because he didn’t want to spout nonsense and mess the duke’s head more.
"Asher, Anne must have talked to you about a lot of things. Has she ever told you anything related to this? Do you think she already knows?"
Asher turned to the duke, dumbfounded.
How would his miss Anne know how she was born?
She was just a child.
But as he thought, he noticed the duke’s expression suddenly change, his eyes ignoring Asher as if he was trying to avoid any confrontation.
"How would miss Anne know?"
Asher asked and the duke paused then hesitantly mumbled out an answer.
"It’s a whole another story. Since it’s her own story, I don’t know if I can tell you it. Maybe...you can ask her one day. What I know is...she knows I got kidnapped. And she knows by who, where I was held, how I escaped...Everything. She knows...So, I suspect she knows everything. Even the story of her birth that I never knew."
The duke explained and Asher knew he was trying to be careful about what he said, wanting to hide something. Asher did not dig deeper, understanding the duke didn’t want to talk about it.
It’s okay.
He didn’t want too much information either because he was frustrated with how many problems this family had. He didn’t want to find out they had more things happening.
Now rummaging through his past interactions with Miss Anne , that one conversation suddenly made Asher pause.
"So the duke is telling me somehow Miss Anne knows all this?"
The duke nodded.
"Duke...if she knows, you should talk with her peacefully. I know there are a lot of things I still don’t know about Miss Anne. But, if what you said is true, you need to take things calmly and solve it. Or else both of you will get hurt when none of you are in the wrong for this situation."
Asher remembered.
Maybe this is what Anne talked about at that time.
Their conversation that time...
It could be that the important person she was talking about was her brother...no...not anymore though.
That important matter could be her knowing how they were related.
And...it all matched with his theory when he recalled her words again.
’She was afraid he would hate her. The important matter that will hurt her important person. Maybe this is...it.’
That must be it.
So...she knew.
It must have been hard for her too.
’It’s still kind of weird to call them father and daughter. It’s unfamiliar. Maybe, time will change things for the better."
