Chapter 8 - Monster Summoning Card
Chapter 8: Monster Summoning Card
“Phew…”
Luo Yun let out a breath, and the sabre and PPSh-41 disintegrated into fragments, vanishing.
The scene was steeped in raw blood and violence.
It all ended in a fleeting moment.
In Kasumigaoka Shiyu’s eyes, it was just a few flashes before her, and the two terrifying ghouls were slain… a complete domination from start to finish, a one-sided battle. The ghouls’ fate almost evoked pity.
Moreover, the young man standing beside her, likely a year younger than her, appeared impossibly grand and towering, instilling a sense of calm.
In that instant, Luo Yun transformed from a light novel novice into a top-tier exorcist.
“How… did you do that?”
Having witnessed the entire event, the girl, who had slain two ghouls with peculiar skill, was bewildered and confused.
Though an ordinary civilian and a victim, living on Itogami Island meant she inevitably encountered strange people and events.
Among her fans, there were even demons.
Luo Yun didn’t speak, only reaching out to the girl.
“Can you still stand?”
The piercing sound of sirens came from the distance. The concentration of kagune* dispersion had been detected by nearby sensors, and the security team was rushing toward them.
Though Nangong Nayue’s protection meant he’d face no real trouble, it would still be a hassle.
“I…”
Kasumigaoka Shiyu knelt on the ground, her legs weak from the earlier fright. Just as she reached out, she felt the cold, damp ground beneath her.
Her face flushed instantly, the sensation of wetting herself leaving her utterly mortified.
“Let’s go. When humans are frightened, their muscles spasm to some degree. Losing control is normal. I understand.”
Luo Yun pulled Kasumigaoka Shiyu up from the ground. Under the dim light, pale droplets trickled down her black stockings onto the concrete.
Her only solace was that the air was thick with the smell of blood and dust, masking the scent. Otherwise, she’d rather have died on the spot.
Luo Yun grabbed her wrist, found a blind spot out of the cameras’ view, and swiftly led her away from the crime scene.
…
In a pastel-pink alley bathed in the haze of neon lights, inside a love hotel,
Luo Yun placed a set of JK-style school uniform outside the bathroom door. Listening to the sound of running water from the bathroom, he sat quietly on a chair and closed his eyes.
The exertion of wielding the power of Myriad Forms left him slightly fatigued, far less severe than the first time when his entire body ached intensely.
This meant his body was gradually adapting to the power it brought.
“The human body’s ability to adapt is truly remarkable. If this were the first time, my arm muscles would’ve practically dissolved by now.”
Luo Yun nodded to himself.
The human body’s self-protection mechanisms were divided into two types.
The first was the subconscious limitation of physical capabilities.
When throwing a punch, pain receptors caused humans to instinctively reduce their force. The sensation of pain was the protective mechanism at work.
Theoretically, if the body’s limits were fully unleashed, a human could lift over three tons, leap over five metres from a standstill, and run faster than Usain Bolt. But the cost would be torn muscles, disintegration, and, if not death, permanent disability.
The second was the limitation on brain capacity.
The body automatically filtered out unnecessary information, like the hum of a car or the kaleidoscope of colours in one’s vision. Without these perceptual limits, the brain could easily overload and crash.
The power of Myriad Forms could be used not only for attack but also for self-repair.
Luo Yun wasn’t sure which ability he had unlocked, but his physique was steadily growing stronger, veering toward something inhuman.
The progress wasn’t rapid, but it was visible.
“Destiny Designation1.”
In his mind, the Destiny Designation System displayed the number one.
“Does it require a plot character to be present to unlock an opportunity?”
Luo Yun nodded to himself.
He had previously done some minor vigilante work, but without exception, none had yielded any rewards.
This time, the ghouls’ strength, in the context of this world, was merely at the level of small fry, only slightly stronger than ordinary humans. So the key was… Kasumigaoka Shiyu.
Was it because he saved her? No… it was more likely that a character needed to be involved in the event.
If Kasumigaoka Shiyu had merely been a bystander or passed by before or after the event, Luo Yun wouldn’t have gained the chance to draw.
“This golden finger is awfully strict. It’s just a system—can’t it just hand over all its treasures to me?”
Luo Yun rarely complained about his golden finger.
Of course, he knew that was impossible.
But a man’s gotta have dreams, right?
Glancing at the girl’s silhouette on the frosted glass of the bathroom, Luo Yun shifted his focus to the golden finger.
He confirmed the designation opportunity.
A light wheel spun, and a faint blue glow, visible only to him, appeared.
A card with a black hole on its back floated in mid-air.
“Obtained one ‘Monster Summoning Card’.”
A one-time use item.
It will disappear after one use. Please use it carefully.
