Chapter 6 - Night, Alley, Girl
Chapter 6: Night, Alley, Girl
Under the dim light, Luo Yun barely made out who the figure running in the darkness was.
That person was none other than Kasumigaoka Shiyu, wasn’t it?
Why wasn’t she heading home, instead coming here for a stroll?
As Luo Yun’s curiosity stirred, Kasumigaoka Shiyu spotted the figure ahead, reaching out breathlessly. “Help… help me, someone… someone’s chasing me! Hurry… call the police!”
But halfway through her run, between Luo Yun and Kasumigaoka Shiyu, a tall figure in a tattered hooded cloak suddenly leapt down from the rooftop of a building.
Facing away from Luo Yun and toward the girl, the man, upon seeing Kasumigaoka Shiyu’s vibrant flesh, revealed a mocking and crazed smile.
Then, from behind the girl, the sound of rapid footsteps echoed—da da da.
A man in casual clothing emerged from around the corner, pursuing her.
His pupils, which should have been human, glinted with a dark red glow.
The pupils were tiny, deep crimson, surrounded by pitch-black sclera, reminiscent of a solar eclipse.
“Little girl, I told you not to run.”
“Otherwise, it’ll be very painful, you know.”
Seeing herself trapped, front and back with no escape, Kasumigaoka Shiyu’s trembling body pressed against the cold wall.
“If you come any closer, I’ll call the police!”
“If the Demon Hunters come, none of you will get away!”
The black-haired girl’s shaking hand pulled a pink flip phone from her pocket.
In a panic, she made to dial the emergency number.
Hearing the prey they’d cornered dare to threaten them, the hooded man sneered cruelly. “Still daring to threaten us?”
As soon as the words fell, a whooshing sound cut through the air.
An object, like a bullet, sliced through the atmosphere, and with a crack, sparks flew from the phone in the girl’s hand, causing Kasumigaoka Shiyu to hurriedly throw it to the ground.
She was just an ordinary girl, perhaps accomplished in writing light novels, but against ghouls, what use was a light novelist? Even though Kasumigaoka Shiyu knew of ghouls’ existence, she was still startled by these demons seemingly straight from hell.
But while the girl was terrified, the two ghouls grew even more excited.
The scent of the girl’s flesh was like a feast of delicacies laid before a beggar, their scarlet eyes gleaming with bloodlust as they closed in step by step.
“Why? There’s artificial food made specifically for ghouls! You don’t even need to eat humans!”
Kasumigaoka Shiyu questioned in fear.
Indeed.
In this world where runic magic and technology were highly advanced, the ghoul’s habit of eating only human flesh had been addressed centuries ago. Artificial foods came in endless varieties, with every flavour imaginable, and were relatively affordable.
Even vampires, who once needed human blood, now had substitutes, didn’t they?
But these two ghouls clearly weren’t listening to the girl’s words.
Seeing the two ghouls closing in, a flicker of despair passed through Kasumigaoka Shiyu’s beautiful eyes.
Was her life about to end here?
As she closed her eyes, preparing for death, a familiar voice suddenly rang out.
“It’s so late, and yet Senior Kasumigaoka Shiyu is still out here? And with two guys, no less… could it be you’re out for a group jog?”
Hearing that familiar voice, Kasumigaoka Shiyu slowly opened her eyes.
Instantly, her cute face, still streaked with tears, showed a look of astonishment.
“Junior-kun… why are you here?”
“The night is long, and I couldn’t sleep, so I came out to jog and stay fit. Look at all this sweat.”
Luo Yun shook his head.
“It’s dangerous at night. Don’t come to places like this alone next time.”
“Another tasty kid showed up!”
“Such… such a delicious smell!”
The two ghouls, their red eyes already exposed, noticed Luo Yun approaching. They immediately paused their urge to devour the girl, drooling viscous saliva, staring intently at him.
Seeing their inhuman appearances, Luo Yun’s brow furrowed slightly, a deep sense of disgust rising within him.
There was nothing wrong with a ghoul’s nature, but attacking humans when perfect substitutes existed—that was their mistake.
The ghoul behind continued blocking Kasumigaoka Shiyu’s escape route, while the one in front let out a guttural snarl from the corner and lunged at Luo Yun with a sudden leap.
It was incredibly fast.
In the original story, ghouls were far stronger than normal humans. Especially powerful ones were immune to standard firearms, and each had their own kagune*.
Kagune were the ghouls’ weapons, coming in various forms and uses, like feather kagune or tail kagune.
A tail kagune, as thick as two adult arms, whipped through the air, leaving deep gouges even in concrete walls.
Seeing this, Kasumigaoka Shiyu let out a scream and instinctively closed her eyes.
Yet, nothing happened.
When she opened her eyes again, the scene before her stunned her.
