Chapter 135: Attempt

"Shizune...I’ve brought your breakfast..." I say, knocking on the door of the cabin where Shizune is sleeping. After all that conversation and journey, we’ve arrived at the village that is under my command.

"You can come in, Yeom," Shizune says as I enter with a tray in my hands. On it, there are toast, bread, cheese, coffee, and fruit jam for her to eat. I made this with what I knew about cooking.

She seems much better today. When we first arrived at the village, I gave her a cabin, and she simply went to take a bath and sleep without eating anything or saying anything else.

I left a bit bothered by that. This village is a place where I keep some special scrolls for myself, so it’s a very hidden location, and the people who live here are ordinary folks who don’t know my identity.

The people in this village don’t even know what I’m hiding here underground. They just live here, thinking it’s a "naturally" safe place to be.

They live peacefully in this village in the middle of the forest, hidden by a mountainous formation and a valley with a large lake.

"You like these things, so I brought them for your breakfast," I say, handing the tray to her. She accepts the tray without getting up from the bed, while grabbing the toast and dipping it in the jam.

"...Did you make this yourself?" She questions me.

"Yes," I respond honestly to her question, a bit awkward about it, even though I’ve cooked for her several times before.

"I see," she says with a smile. I dip my finger in the jam and taste it, feeling the ridiculously sweet flavor.

’I think I put too much sugar...’ I was very nervous when making this breakfast. I should have been more careful.

"Sorry, it seems I misjudged the point."

"It’s no problem," she says while continuing to eat. It seems she’s making an effort to act normal, and I’m doing the same, which makes the interaction a bit stiff and strange.

"Shizune, is there anything you want to learn? You know, so we can spend time together. I’ve already told all the villagers that you and I are a couple of cultivators," I say, trying to make some arrangement with her.

Also making it clear that I’ve told everyone that we two are in a relationship.

"Train me, for real. Teach me to fight without it being with cultivation or the like. I want to learn to fight for real... And do you have a violin? I learned to play, and I’d like to play for you later."

’Oh... I didn’t know that,’ I get excited at the prospect of her playing the violin for me.

"Yes, I can get one from the village... And I can teach you to fight," I agree with what she said, while leaving the room so she can have her breakfast in peace. In the meantime, I run through the village, looking for someone who might have a violin.

"Hello, Miss Cultivator, do you need something?" a woman on the street asks, seeing my hurry. Normally, I would ignore her, but now I need a favor.

In theory, everyone in the village should obey me, since their ancestors were brought to this place by me to take care of the location, but I’ll try to negotiate instead of being authoritative.

"Yes, do you have a violin or someone who has one? I can give a pill that extends life by 5 years in exchange for the violin," I make the offer. It’s a small village, and stealing things would be complicated without knowing who did it after I ask about violins, and I don’t want to seem bossy by ordering them to give me the violin.

"Yes, I have one. I can give it to you, but could you then give the pill to the elderly man in that cabin?" She speaks while going somewhere. The people in this village are quite united and altruistic with each other.

’I guess that’s not a problem.’ I quickly go to the cabin to deliver the pill, knocking on the door. An elderly man answers, and I explain the situation. He accepts the pill with a smile and thanks, saying he’ll give me something later.

But without paying much attention to that, I return to the place where the woman was, finding her holding a violin.

"Thank you for the violin. I’ve already delivered the pill to the elderly man," I thank her, taking the violin and running back to Shizune’s cabin. The woman shouts a thank you, and I just give a brief look and nod.

’I’m sure we’ll have a wonderful life.’ With no more distractions and no enemies to come after me, one can only imagine that the Celestial Demon died along with the leader of the Orthodox Sect.

If I don’t become too obvious, no one will discover that I’m alive, and I can live happily with Shizune, and in the end, Shizune is the only one who knows I’m alive, so no one will know anything.

Entering the house with a smile, I find Shizune, who has already finished her breakfast. She’s holding a storage ring, but it’s not the one I gave her.

"Shizune, whose... Never mind, it’s nothing," I was going to question angrily whose "gift" it was, but I quickly noticed that it’s just my jealousy, and she made me promise to be less jealous.

"Here’s a violin for you. I made a trade with the villagers for it," I justify my action, so she doesn’t think I stole it, which wouldn’t be too difficult, I suppose.

"Ah, yes, it looks good... Yeom, could you destroy this ring for me? It’s my friend’s. I didn’t bury it with her because it releases Qi, and someone could dig up the grave to steal it."

’So that’s what it was...’ This makes me feel strange. I thought it was a gift from someone, but in the end, it was something from a dead person that she just kept. This makes me think that all the times I’ve been jealous might have been an exaggeration on my part, and not because something was happening.

Shizune soon starts playing the instrument to see if it’s well-tuned or something similar, and the melody is very beautiful.

’She really knows how to play... Did she learn this in the Orthodox Sect?’ In my sect, she never had any instrument to play.

"You play very well," I compliment her while she adjusts something on the violin and puts it aside.

"Thank you. I learned a while ago, but it hasn’t been that long, so I’m still not very good at it," she says humbly as she gets up and comes over to me with a smile.

I’m not sure what she means by "a while ago," but I’ll judge that she learned it in the Orthodox Sect and just wants to leave the past in the past.

"Shall we train?" She really seems eager to learn to fight, but I don’t understand why she wants to learn to fight like a regular person when we could find a way to cultivate.

Or I could teach her new techniques, but I decide not to question it to enjoy the moment. It’s also good for calming the mind.

We both go outside as I guide her to a nearby clearing to fight. I reduce my cultivation to the maximum, becoming similar to her in strength.

After all, it would be impossible to teach her if I measured it through the power I have, because anything would seem weak and slow.

Shizune takes a fighting stance and looks at me with a certain nostalgia, as if it reminded her of something good.

"Shizune, your stance is wrong. Move your leg a little more to the right and raise your fist," I say, teaching her what’s wrong.

"Oh, like this?" She asks as if she were a real disciple and I a master. This new interaction is strange, but it’s not bad. I think I like it to be this way. Maybe I really was too toxic before?

"Yes... Exactly like that..." She learns quickly, getting the right stance in an instant. I approach her, manually correcting her posture with more intuitive than invasive touches.

"That’s better. Since you’re not very strong, you shouldn’t try to go head-to-head with your punches," Shizune has a physique unsuited for direct combat, although she seems to have a lot of talent for a more distant fighting style or with light strikes to vital points.

"Hmm... Yeom, let’s suppose the following situation... If I’m weak, but I’m against a normal human, being a normal human, and I’m in a situation where my life depends on fighting..."

"How can I take down my stronger, and perhaps armed, opponent without sacrificing my life in the process?"

"Well... For you, I think it would be to use faster attacks, focusing on weak points like joints, nerves, or sensitive areas."

"...Could you teach me that, then? Not aiming to kill, I just want to learn to immobilize the target."

"...Of course, it’s a strange request, but I can teach you that, and you have some talent, so you’ll learn quickly," The situation Shizune mentioned can’t happen because she’s no longer an ordinary person, but a cultivator.

A random cutting object would never hurt her, but if she wants to learn with this strange situation in mind, that’s fine.

"First, you must focus on being fast and having quick reflexes. Since you’re weaker, try to use the enemy’s strength against them."

"What do you mean?"

"Using your ’hypothetical situation’ you mentioned, if the opponent rushes towards you, dodge and use that against them. Most wouldn’t be able to change direction quickly enough to react to a strike in that situation."

"Move to the side and hit them in a weak point that can immobilize or weaken them. I think in about two weeks, you’ll understand and be able to perfectly replicate the movement!"

"I’m sure we’ll have a wonderful life," I say with the gentlest smile I can manage.
