Chapter 103: New Kingdom

I’ve been flying nonstop for days, and it was difficult to fly through the rain, cold, and heat without any rest. My bat body is quite resilient, but it was definitely pushed to its limits.

The problem wasn’t just flying but rather flying in the hot sun and cold rain in certain places. The flight was super fast, but the changing climates were bad for me.

I passed through several different kingdoms but didn’t have time to enjoy their beauty since I just flew over them quickly. I didn’t stop in any of them so I could put as much distance as possible between myself and my pursuers.

The further away I am, the harder it will be for them to find me. As that was my focus, I passed through more than 6 kingdoms on my way, flying so far that it would take a long time for me to be discovered.

This time flying made me think about a lot of things to do while I figure out how to start my new life. Finally, after so much flying, I’m too tired to spot a kingdom.

Since I’m too exhausted to keep going, I’ll have to stop in this kingdom, even though I don’t know how far I am from any other kingdom or human settlement. The kingdom is in a place with an arid, almost desert-like climate, which reduces the chances of there being vampires.

So I’ll head straight for this kingdom, deciding that it’s where I’ll settle down and begin living. I fly over the kingdom’s walls, looking for someone to be the person who will help me.

Of course, it won’t be voluntary help. My plan is to obtain money from this person in a clever, even underhanded way, but I won’t kill them or anything like that.

"Just what I needed!" I see a caravan of merchants passing through the city streets, and they seem to be about to depart, which only further facilitates my objectives and avoids future problems since if they leave, they won’t come looking for me afterward.

I quickly go to an alley and assume a human form, adjusting my hood to hide my face as much as possible. Although I may look suspicious, it’s the best I can do to hide myself.

I approach the merchants as if I don’t want anything, getting close to the one who seems the richest among them. I have an excellent plan, and I know it will work thanks to magic.

"Good evening, sir, would you like to buy this? I’m not sure what it is, but it’s pretty." I say, taking out a "sapphire" from my pocket, or rather, a stone with a magical veil obscuring its image.

Similar to what I did with the dead bodies to make them look like me, the stone appears to be a real, pure sapphire, whether in texture, weight, touch, or visual effects. It is a 100% real and pure sapphire in the eyes of humans.

"..." The merchant’s eyes widen, as this is, to his vision, an original sapphire. After all, humans have no way of discovering things made by magic. If it were a vampire or vampire hunter, deceiving him would be difficult.

In this world, most of the magical knowledge I’ve obtained has been to help me, and fortunately, I’ve had magic to deceive others practically from the start.

"Where did you find this?" He asks, taking the stone from my hand and analyzing it. He touches it, bites it, and does something with a pot of a liquid in his hand, probably trying to determine the purity of the stone.

"My mom always kept these, but she died, and I’m broke. She said these little stones are expensive, so I want 5 gold coins for them!" I say to the merchant, pretending to be a sweet and naive girl who doesn’t know the value of a sapphire. The merchant soon gives me a malicious smile.

"Oh, but they’re not worth that much," he says as I take the stone back. A sapphire of the type I gave him would be worth at least 100 gold coins, so it’s obvious he’s lying.

"...I’ll go look for another merchant." He seems agitated when I turn to leave. I don’t care how much he’s going to pay for this, but I want to at least have a good amount of money to seek professional tutoring.

"Wait, I’ll pay 3 gold coins for each one," he says, trying to contain his agitation.

"I want 5 coins," I repeat the value I want, and I won’t accept less. This man is reducing the value of a sapphire by more than 90% and still wants to bargain? He’s very greedy.

"How about 3 gold and 50 silver? No one will pay more than me for this," he says, trying to deceive me. Little does he know that I’m the one deceiving him. As a merchant, he has a good eye, but he can’t distinguish magic from reality.

In the end, he’ll be taking a loss regardless of how much he pays me, but 5 is the minimum I’ll accept.

"W-Wait, don’t go, how about 4 gold coins for each one?" He tries to bargain when I try to leave again.

"It’s 5, and I won’t accept less," I say coldly. I’m in a hurry and want to move on to something else. For me, every second is precious since I don’t know when I’ll be killed.

"...Okay, I’ll give you 5 gold coins for each one," he finally concedes.

"Great!" I take all the little stones I have and hand them over to him. There are 20 of them, which amounts to 100 gold coins. I picked up these stones from the ground as soon as I landed in the kingdom.

"Here you are," he says in a tone as if he’s lost out, but his greedy gaze shows he thinks he’s outwitted me.

’Greedy fool,’ I start to leave, taking the money with me. I hide it well in my cloak as I move away from the area. The magic on the sapphires will last 2 weeks.

So in two weeks, all this guy will have is a bunch of stones. As I walk through the city, I look for a place to try to summon Yui and see how it works. I’m curious about summoning her since she said I could do it whenever I wanted.

I climb on top of a house and sit on the roof. I activate the magic in my soul, and soon a faint green glow occurs, and a small, floating Yui appears. She has a light, ethereal green glow.

"Oh...this isn’t quite what I expected," I murmur, looking at the small, floating Yui. I thought she would come in person.

"Shizune, I see you’ve taken my suggestion, and I’m glad for you," the small Yui says with a gentle smile.

"Although, it was wrong of you to deceive those people," she disapproves of my actions, losing her smile.

"I’m sorry, okay? But he also tried to deceive me in return...so are you really here?" I question with doubt, given the small body that doesn’t remind me much of the original I saw before.

"Yes, I am the original Yui, but my body is not here, only an astral projection. I will remain summoned until you dismiss me or die in this world, so I can help you!" She speaks with some excitement.

"Why would you help me?" I questioned her with doubt, not understanding why she would stay here to help me.

"Because I think both you and my sister have made a lot of mistakes. You’ve done bad things you shouldn’t have, but my sister has been too harsh. She doesn’t care that you’re a human and that humans always make mistakes."

"So I want to help you become someone better so my sister can forgive you, and I also want to help you to reduce the damage you cause. Innocent lives are being affected, and I don’t like that. It’s terrible, and no one should be affected in this way because of a feud."

Her tone is serious and sad, showing that she values the lives of all beings greatly.

"..." I look at her for a while, thinking.

"So will you help me?" I want to know if she’ll help me, or if it’s more to help others than to help me.

"Yes, I will help you, Shizune. And no one other than me can see you," she says sweetly. It’s nice to know I can always have her by my side to advise me.

"What should I do now?" I ask while thinking about what to do, as I can’t leave everything to her.

"Hmm...I’m not sure. I can no longer see your future because you can’t truly die, so I don’t know what is or isn’t dangerous for you."

"Okay, then I guess I’ll look for a place to sleep for now, and then I’ll try to hire someone to teach me things...Yui, I’ll continue deceiving people," Yui looks at me with sadness.

"Understand that I have no other way to get money, and I don’t have time...I’m sorry," It feels strange to do something bad in Yui’s presence. It seems even more wrong than usual.

"Alright...but don’t leave me here to witness that," she speaks with discomfort. It seems she is 100% against evil.

"Okay, Yui, I’ll dismiss you when I’m about to do something not so good. Thanks for the help," I thank her again.

"It’s nothing. I’m sure my sister will forgive you someday," Yui says as she climbs onto my shoulder and sits there, humming a gentle melody that calms me.

Her voice is beautiful, and the sound is really pleasant to hear. I climb down from the roof and look for a place to sleep for the night.
