Chapter 67: A Piece Of Paper, A Name And Numbers
Lunara blinked at the outstretched hand before her, momentarily taken aback by Amara’s poised presence. Recovering quickly, she offered a small, polite handshake.
"Nice to meet you," Lunara said, her tone neutral.
Amara’s smile remained perfectly in place as she turned her attention to Eryx. "Mila’s been talking about her ’mommy’ non-stop," she said lightly. "It’s quite adorable, really." She then continued after shifting her eyes to Lunara, "So, you are...?"
"Introducing my wife, Lunara." Eryx suddenly introduced her as his wife.
Lunara’s mind went blank for a second.
She turned to Eryx, staring at him like he’d lost his mind. The same man who had insisted that they keep their marriage a secret had just casually introduced her as his wife.
Was he suffering from memory loss? A sudden change of heart? Or did he just enjoy making her life more complicated?
Lunara forced a polite smile, choosing her words carefully. "Well, that’s quite the sudden introduction." Her gaze flicked toward Eryx, but his face remained unreadable, offering her no clues.
Amara chuckled softly, her perfectly manicured fingers brushing against her chin. "How interesting," she mused. "Mr. Grantham never mentioned he was married."
Lunara held back a sigh. ’Of course he didn’t. I am supposed to be his most confidential secret.’
Mila, oblivious to the tension, tugged on Lunara’s sleeve. "Mommy?"
Lunara froze at the tiny voice calling out to her. She looked down to see Mila staring up at her with bright, expectant eyes, completely unaware of the turmoil unfolding around them.
Before she could respond, Amara let out a soft laugh. "Oh, Mila, darling," she said smoothly, crouching slightly to meet the little girl’s gaze. "You must be confused. I’m your Aunt Amara, remember? And I take care of you, just like a mama would."
Lunara’s grip tightened around the edge of the table as Amara’s words sank in. ’Just like a mama would?’
Her confusion deepened. Did Amara see herself as more than just an aunt? Or was she subtly trying to stake a claim, as if Lunara was intruding on something?
Lunara’s eyes flickered to Eryx, expecting him to react, to clarify things. His expression remained carefully neutral, but Lunara noticed the slight tension in his jaw. "She doesn’t seem confused to me," he said, his tone calm yet firm.
Amara straightened, her smile never faltering. "Children at this age say all sorts of things," she mused, brushing an invisible speck of dust off her sleeve. "But I suppose it’s only natural for her to look up to someone like you, Miss Lunara. After all, she sees you sitting with her father."
Lunara narrowed her eyes slightly. Was that a compliment or a veiled remark? There was something about Amara’s tone that made it hard to tell.
Before she could respond, Mila tugged at Lunara’s sleeve again. "Mommy, up," the little girl demanded, raising her arms expectantly.
Lunara hesitated, glancing at Eryx.
Eryx, still unreadable, simply gestured toward Mila. "She’s asking for you."
Lunara inhaled deeply before slowly lifting Mila into her arms. "Phew..." The sound escaped her lips as she adjusted to Mila’s weight. The little girl giggled, wrapping her tiny arms around Lunara’s neck as if she belonged there.
Eryx watched silently, his expression remained cold and stoic, while Amara observed the scene with a knowing smile.
"You’re quite good with her," Amara remarked. "It’s almost as if you’ve been doing this for a while."
Lunara forced a small smile, unsure how to respond. She wasn’t about to admit that holding Mila felt... oddly awkward.
"Well, she’s been forced into the role," Naomi said, smirking. "Might as well get comfortable, right, Ara?"
Amara tilted her head slightly, her poised expression never wavering. "I must say, this is quite a surprise. I never knew Mr. Grantham was married," she said, her voice carrying just the right amount of curiosity without sounding too intrusive.
Lunara’s grip on Mila tightened slightly.
"It wasn’t something I wanted to make public," Eryx said smoothly as he took Mila from Lunara’s arms, noticing how awkwardly she held her. "You should eat more. You can barely hold her."
Lunara shot him a glare, her irritation flaring.
Amara chuckled lightly, tucking a stray strand of hair behind Mila’s ear. "Well, I suppose a child’s presence does make a household feel more... complete," she mused. Her gaze flickered to Eryx, a subtle meaning hidden behind her words. "Don’t you think so?"
Amara leaned in closer to Mila, her delicate fingers brushing over the little girl’s cheek as she smiled. The affectionate display made Lunara’s chest tighten, not out of jealousy, but something else she couldn’t quite place. Even Naomi, usually unfazed, shifted uncomfortably in front of her.
"Well, seeing the three of you like this," Amara said, her voice warm and measured, "it almost feels like a perfect little family." Her gaze flickered to Eryx, her smile lingering. "Don’t you think so?"
Naomi let out a quiet scoff, stirring her coffee with unnecessary force. "Wow, what a smooth fox," she muttered under her breath.
The silence stretched until a waiter approached their table, balancing a tray of desserts.
"Your orders," he announced politely, carefully placing a chocolate lava cake in front of Naomi and a fruit parfait in front of Lunara. Then, he smiled at Lunara—a brief but noticeable gesture.
Eryx’s eyes caught the exchange, his expression unreadable as he subtly shifted Mila onto his other arm.
Naomi, completely unfazed, grabbed her spoon eagerly. "Finally, some actual sweetness at this table," she muttered before taking a bite of her cake. Then, she glanced at Eryx and huffed. "Are you going to keep standing there and watching me eat? You’re ruining my mood, you know that?" She rolled her eyes at him while munching her cake.
Lunara shook her head slightly at Naomi’s antics before reaching for her spoon. But as she lifted her plate slightly, something underneath caught her attention. A small, folded piece of paper.
Her fingers hesitated before she discreetly pulled it out, unfolding it beneath the table. Her eyes flickered across the words, a name and a phone number.
