My Cold-Hearted Husband Wants Me Back -
Chapter 50: The Sudden Protective Husband
Chapter 50: The Sudden Protective Husband
The car moved steadily through the city, sunlight streaming through the windows, but inside, the atmosphere was anything but calm. Lunara sat rigidly, her fingers gripping the fabric of her skirt. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t stop the faint tremble in her hands.
Eryx’s cold demeanor hadn’t changed. He crossed his legs, his jaw tight as he finally broke the silence. "No more modeling jobs," he said flatly. "I’ll tell my mother myself."
Lunara inhaled sharply. "I’m not quitting." Her voice was quiet, but determined.
Eryx scoffed. "Why do you need to work? I’ll give you all the money you want. And after what happened today, you still want to continue?"
Her frustration started rising. "Then why did you have to come and make things worse?!"
Eryx’s eyes flicked toward her, sharp and unrelenting. "You called me!"
She flinched, surprised by the sudden rise in his voice. Pouting slightly, she blinked, trying to hold back the lingering fear from earlier.
Eryx exhaled sharply, leaning back against the seat. His fingers curled against his knee, tension still evident in his posture. He wasn’t used to this, seeing her afraid of him. His frustration wasn’t meant for her, but the way she recoiled made something uneasy settle in his chest.
Lunara turned her face toward the window. "I called you because I needed help," she muttered. "Not for you to... to do that."
His jaw tightened. "That?" His voice was lower now, but no less firm. "He touched you. He hurt you. And you think I should’ve just let it go?"
She swallowed. "I just didn’t want things to get worse."
Eryx let out a short, humorless chuckle. "So you’d rather let him off? Pretend nothing happened?"
Lunara’s hands clenched into fists in her lap. "But that’s not how you should handle the matters, do you have to twist his hand ?"
Eryx huffed, turning to face her fully. "That’s how handle everyone who hurt the one I care."
Silence filled the car again, thick with tension. From the front seat, Callum kept his eyes straight ahead, wisely choosing not to get involved.
"Then... I won’t call you anymore," Lunara muttered, furrowing her brows and pressing her lips together.
Eryx let out a scoff. "Then... I guess you just need to be a stay-at-home wife? How about that?"
Lunara’s jaw clenched as a surge of frustration bubbled up inside her. She turned to him, eyes flashing. "Why are you suddenly acting like a protective husband?" she snapped. "For the past two years, when I was struggling, you never even bothered to send a single message. You never asked if I was okay, if anyone hurt me, or even if I was alive."
Her voice wavered slightly, but she held her ground, refusing to let him brush this off. "And now, after all this time, you want to control what I do? You think you can just walk in and decide everything for me?"
Eryx took a few seconds of silence after Lunara’s burst. He leaned forward, closing their distance, "Should I apologise then?"
Lunara stiffened, caught off guard by his response. She had expected him to argue back, to throw another sharp remark her way, but instead, he was asking if he should apologize.
Her fingers curled into fists on her lap. "An apology won’t change anything," she said, her voice quieter now but still firm. "You can’t just act like the past two years didn’t happen."
Eryx studied her, his expression unreadable. "I’m not acting like they didn’t happen," he said evenly. "But if you want me to apologize for not checking in on you... fine. I’m sorry."
Lunara took a deep breath. He said it so simply, like it wasn’t a big deal. But to her, it was a big deal.
She turned her head away, staring out the window as the buildings blurred past. "It doesn’t matter," she muttered. "Nothing will change."
Eryx leaned back slightly, watching her reaction. Seeing her fuming, he let out a low chuckle. "So sensitive," he mused. "I didn’t know my wife was this emotional."
Lunara’s head snapped toward him, her eyes burning with frustration. "I am not—" Her words caught in her throat as a sudden lump formed.
Before she could stop it, the tears spilled over.
She bit her lip, furiously wiping at her face. But the more she tried to hold it in, the harder it became. The memories of every night she spent alone, the whispers behind her back, the weight of surviving on her own, all came crashing down at once.
Eryx’s teasing smirk faded instantly. His expression shifted, eyes narrowing slightly as if he hadn’t expected this reaction. "Hey—"
"Why are you doing this?" she choked out, her voice trembling. "Why are you acting like you care now? Where were you when I needed you?"
For the first time since they got in the car, Eryx had no immediate response. His fingers twitched, but he didn’t reach for her. He just sat there, watching her, fully aware that, for once, he had no defense because she was right.
Lunara sniffled, hastily wiping her tears with the back of her hand. "You don’t get to do this," she said, her voice shaking. "You don’t get to barge into my life, act like you care, be all protective, and pretend the last two years never happened."
Eryx exhaled slowly, his jaw tightening. "I never said they didn’t happen."
"Then why?" She turned to him, her eyes red. "Why now? Why are you suddenly acting like you are the caring husband in the world?!"
Eryx held her gaze, his expression unreadable. Then, after a long pause, he said, "Because I want to."
Lunara let out a bitter laugh. "That’s not an answer."
"It’s the only one I have right now," he admitted.
The silence stretched between them, heavy with everything left unsaid. Callum shifted awkwardly in the front seat, clearly wishing he were anywhere else.
Lunara let out a shaky breath, turning away. "I don’t believe you," she murmured.
Eryx’s fingers curled into a fist again, but this time, he said nothing.
