My Cold-Hearted Husband Wants Me Back -
Chapter 27: Arrested
Chapter 27: Arrested
Naomi rushed inside, shoving Gideon aside. "What the hell do you think you’re doing?" she snapped, her eyes blazing with fury as she wrapped her arms protectively around Lunara.
Lunara looked up at Naomi, her lips trembling. "Naomi..." she whispered, gripping her friend’s hand tightly.
"Sir, this is him. Gideon Winfield," Naomi said firmly, pointing at him.
A police officer stepped forward, his expression stern. "Gideon Winfield, you’re under investigation for the arson of this shop. We have reason to believe you were involved. Please cooperate and come with us for questioning."
Gideon scoffed. "Are you kidding me? You think you can arrest me without proof?"
The officer didn’t waver. "We have enough evidence to bring you in. If you resist, we’ll have no choice but to charge you with obstruction as well."
Another officer moved in, pulling out handcuffs. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
"No! Do you even know who I am?!" Gideon shouted, jerking his arm away. "I am Mr. Grantham’s soon-to-be father-in-law!"
Naomi let out a sharp laugh, unable to hold it in. "Soon-to-be father-in-law? Are you joking?" She scoffed, shaking her head. "What kind of fantasy world are you living in?"
Gideon yanked his arms again, trying to break free. "Let me go! This is a mistake! Call Mr. Grantham right now! He’ll clear this up!" He turned to the officers, his voice desperate.
Naomi gently removed her embrace from Lunara before standing facing Gideon, "No need to call him, I can clear this up."
She let out a slow, amused sigh. "You really don’t get it, do you?" She stepped closer, pulling out her ID and holding it up for him to see. "Read this carefully."
Gideon squinted to see the card that was flashed in front of him.
"I’m Naomi Grantham. And the Mr. Grantham you’re so desperate to call?" She smirked. "That would be my brother. And trust me, he has no idea who you are or what kind of nonsense you’ve been feeding yourself."
Gideon’s face twisted in shock. "You... You’re lying!" His voice wavered as his eyes darted between Naomi and the officers.
Naomi tilted her head, amused. "Why would I lie? Eryx is my brother, and trust me, if he had any plans of welcoming you into the family, I would know." She let out a small laugh. "But too bad for you... he’s already married. So whatever fantasy you’ve been dreaming, it’s time to wake up."
Gideon clenched his fists, his body trembling with rage. "No... that’s not... He promised—"
The officer tightened his grip on Gideon’s arm. "Enough. You’re coming with us. If Mr. Grantham has anything to say, he can do so through legal channels."
As the officers led Gideon toward the exit, he thrashed again. "Call him! Call Eryx Grantham right now!" His voice echoed through the ruined shop, but no one paid him any mind.
Lunara let out a shaky breath, watching him disappear through the doorway. Naomi turned to her, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "It’s over, Ara. You don’t have to be afraid anymore."
Lunara clung to Naomi, her legs weak beneath her. "Naomi... how?" Her voice trembled.
"You mean, how did I get here?" Naomi asked, glancing around for a place to sit. But the shop was still in ruins, with nothing safe to rest on. "Let’s talk in my car."
Lunara hesitated, gripping Naomi’s sleeve. "Did you... come alone?"
Naomi raised an eyebrow but nodded. "Of course. I drove here by myself." She smiled reassuringly. "It’s just me."
Lunara exhaled in relief, unaware that Naomi had already put the pieces together.
The moment the door of the car was closed, Naomi turned to look at Lunara who was in the passenger seat, "Why are you here? Why didn’t you go back to my house?"
"I–I just don’t want to burden you anymore," She smiled, though it was a weak one.
Naomi frowned, gripping the steering wheel. "Burden me? Ara, do you even hear yourself?" She let out a sigh, trying to calm her frustration. "You should’ve come to me. Do you have any idea what could have happened if I hadn’t shown up in time?"
Lunara lowered her gaze, playing with the hem of her sleeve. "I just... I didn’t want to cause trouble. And I didn’t know what to do after..." She trailed off, her voice barely above a whisper.
Naomi softened at the sight of Lunara’s trembling hands. She reached over, squeezing them gently. "Listen, you’re not alone in this. You never were." She paused before adding, "And you should stop thinking you have to deal with everything by yourself."
Lunara blinked, taken aback by the warmth in Naomi’s voice. "I know..." She looked down at her lap before raising her head again. "But how did you know I was here?"
"I didn’t," Naomi admitted. "The police called me earlier. Since we gave them my number, they wanted me to come here to discuss the investigation. They were going to explain how the fire started. By sheer luck... thank God... I arrived just in time to save you."
"But why did they arrest Gideon?" she asked, confused.
Naomi sighed. "Well, he was caught on a nearby CCTV, and some of his belongings were found in the shop."
"They can arrest him just based on that?" Lunara still didn’t understand.
Naomi nodded. "It’s enough to bring him in for questioning. Plus, with his history and the evidence they found, they have a strong case against him." She tapped on Lunara’s hand, "Now, let’s go back home."
"No!" Lunara suddenly refused.
"Why? Is something wrong?" Naomi frowned slightly. She had no intention of revealing that she already knew about Lunara’s marriage to her brother, she wanted Lunara to tell her on her own.
Lunara swallowed hard before looking straight at Naomi. "Can you help me with something? I know this is shameless of me, and I really don’t have anywhere else to go, but if I’m staying at your place... can you not tell anyone that I’m there?"
"You mean my brother?" Naomi’s question hung heavily in the air as they stared at each other in silence.
