My Cold-Hearted Husband Wants Me Back
Chapter 203: Eryx’s World

Chapter 203: Eryx’s World

The word barely left his mouth, barely even a breath. His mind was still lagging behind what Adam had just told him as if his brain refused to register it.

Seraphine?

Paying for the daughter of the man who kidnapped Mila?

No. That didn’t make sense.

It couldn’t make sense.

But Adam didn’t look like he was joking. His arms were folded across his chest, gaze locked on Eryx with that unnerving clarity he only showed when he was dead serious.

"You’re lying," Eryx said, but even he didn’t sound convinced.

Adam didn’t flinch. "I wish I were."

"But... Callum checked—" Eryx’s voice trailed off as his mind raced, replaying the background information Callum had given him not long ago.

Adam shook his head. "No, not what you think." He seemed to alread know where Eryx’s thoughts were heading. "Remember when she started showing up again? It was right around the time you made headlines for that major business deal, about half a year ago."

Eryx’s eyes narrowed slightly, the pieces beginning to shift uncomfortably in his mind. "You’re saying she came back because of that?"

"I’m saying she didn’t come back for you," Adam replied calmly. "She came back for what you represented, stability, power, a future that didn’t involve scraping by. She saw the spotlight returning to you and figured it was time to step back in."

Eryx leaned back in his chair, his shoulders tense. "So, at the hotel... she came thinking I might give her another chance." He paused, his gaze softening as it landed on Lunara. "But then she saw me with Lunara and she even claimed I was her husband."

"I was right," Lunara said, her voice rising slightly, as if defending herself. "You were my husband, even then."

"I know..." Eryx smiled and gently pinched her cheek.

Adam scrunched his nose in exaggerated disgust. "Ugh, please. No PDA allowed."

He exhaled sharply and leaned forward again, his tone turning serious. "That’s why she tried another way. If she couldn’t get to you through the front door, she’d slip in through the side."

Eryx’s smile faded. "What do you mean?"

Adam folded his arms. "I mean, she’s not aiming at you directly. She’s circling the people around you and she found her opportunity through the late Mila."

Eryx frowned. "How did you even get all this information?"

Adam gave a faint shrug. "My circle’s different you know that. And don’t blame Callum. Seraphine knew you weren’t giving up on finding out who was behind Mila’s kidnapping. So she fed Callum false leads. Led him right to the wrong trail."

Eryx’s jaw tensed. His fingers tapped anxiously against the edge of the table. "That’s why nothing made sense. The inconsistencies, the missing gaps..."

"She made sure you’d end up chasing ghosts," Adam said grimly. "Meanwhile, she was tying up loose ends in the background. Quietly. Carefully."

Lunara sat still, her expression frozen. "But why Mila?"

Adam exhaled slowly. "Well... she noticed Eryx adored Mila more than anyone at that time." He pressed his lips together, hesitating. "I think her plan back then was to play the savior—to swoop in, help solve the case, earn Eryx’s gratitude... maybe even win him back."

He paused, eyes flickering toward Eryx. "But then... the incident happened. And Mila ended up—"

He stopped, unable to say it out loud.

The weight of Mila’s death settled heavily between them.

"She started showing up again once she’d composed herself," Adam finally said. "I guess she waited until enough time passed. Until you were stable again. Public, powerful. Until she could reenter the picture without suspicion."

Eryx leaned back in his chair, his jaw clenched and eyes dark. "She wanted to use Mila’s tragedy to clean her image and step back into my life."

Adam gave a slow nod. "And when that didn’t work, she had to take a step back. Regroup. Calm herself and come up with another angle."

Lunara’s fingers tightened slightly around Eryx’s sleeve. "That’s why she disappeared for a while?"

"Exactly," Adam said. "Then she finally found out that you and Lunara weren’t living together for a while..."

He let the words hang for a second before adding, "That gave her hope. She thought there was still space for her to slide back in. Maybe even thought you were having problems. All she needed was an opening."

Eryx’s eyes narrowed. "She waited for a crack to show."

Adam nodded. "You really need to be careful. Your mother used her power to block Seraphine from getting any position within the company, but I heard she still managed to get one... Why though?"

Eryx frowned, his eyes sharp as he thought. "Matilda?"

Adam smirked, snapping his fingers. "Ding dong deng!" He chuckled. "Sometimes I wonder—are you really her grandson? You’re always two steps behind that woman."

Eryx leaned back, clearly annoyed. "So Matilda pulled strings to place Seraphine back in?"

"I wouldn’t say pulled strings," Adam said, crossing his arms. "More like... she opened a window and pretended not to see who climbed in. You need to figure out what she planned when she decided to include Seraphine in..."

Lunara sighed weakly.

"Why? Tired?" Eryx asked, worried that she couldn’t handle everything she just heard.

Lunara shook her head, "Just by listening to this gives me a headache, how do you handle everything?"

Eryx turned toward her, his features softening instantly. "I don’t," he admitted, his voice quieter than before. "I just... keep going. If I stop to think too much, I might not get back up again."

Lunara gave a faint smile, though her eyes still held that weary concern. "It’s like everyone around you has some hidden agenda."

Adam, who suddenly stood up, added dryly, "Welcome to Eryx’s world. Backstabbing is practically a second language here."

"Where are you going?" Eryx asked, noticing Adam was about to leave.

"I’m not that free, you know..." Adam arched his brow. "Ask the boy later who hired him."

Turning his back, he raised a hand in a lazy wave. "Till we meet again."
