Chapter 198: My Husband Can Provide For Me

"What are you doing here?"

Eryx’s voice cut through the air, sharp and unexpected, making Lunara’s head snap up. Her heart stuttered as her gaze met his, worried, unreadable, intense.

She blinked, her vision already blurring. No, not here. Not now. Swallowing the lump in her throat, she forced a small smile onto her face.

"What are you doing here? You said you’d pick me up in the afternoon," she said lightly, stepping forward to meet him. Her hand reached for his, fingers wrapping around his like an anchor. "Let’s talk over there." She tilted her head toward a quieter corner, eager to move away from the corridor.

Eryx didn’t move at first. His eyes studied her face carefully, as if searching for a crack beneath her smile.

Then, without a word, he gently unwrapped her hand from his.

His gaze drifted past her, scanning the break area. It didn’t take long for his eyes to settle on two women standing there, frozen, clearly caught off guard. They had likely noticed his presence the moment he’d called out to Lunara.

His stare lingered, cold and unreadable, long enough to make the silence feel heavy.

Lunara followed his gaze and immediately felt the tension shift. The air around them thickened, as if the room itself knew someone had crossed a line.

Lunara felt her stomach twist. She knew that look on Eryx’s face, terrifying in its quiet intensity. The kind of look that meant he was deciding whether or not someone deserved to exist in his world a moment longer.

Panicking, she reached for his arm again, tugging it lightly. "Hey," she said quickly, "can we—uh—can we go get something to eat?"

He didn’t look at her. His gaze still pinned the staff in place.

"I’m serious!" she blurted, her voice a little too bright. "I’m really craving something. Anything, actually...like, I don’t know, dumplings? Or—oh! What about that place with the cinnamon rolls I said I didn’t like but secretly loved? Let’s go there!"

Eryx finally turned to look at her, brow raised slightly, his expression unreadable.

She laughed nervously, practically dragging him by the arm now. "Please? I’ve been thinking about food all morning. It’s kind of a problem."

Only then did she catch his expression, softening. "You’re bad at lying," he murmured, eyes still sharp but less dangerous now. "Don’t you need to sign your contract?"

She gulped, clearing her throat. "Hmm... actually, after thinking for a while earlier... I don’t think I need to work," she said, her laugh clearly awkward and forced. "My husband can provide for me. Why would I work, right?"

Eryx stopped walking, and she could feel his eyes on her again—heavy, unreadable.

"Lunara," he said slowly, "is that what you really think?"

She shrugged, looking anywhere but him. "I mean, it’s what people think anyway. Might as well live up to it."

There was a long pause.

"Then I’ll support you however you want," he said simply. "But not because of what people say. Because it’s your choice."

Her throat tightened, her eyes stinging again. She hated how easily his words unraveled her walls.

"Okay," she whispered, and this time, she meant it less as a joke and more like a silent thank you.

They were taking a step when Eryx suddenly stopped and looked over his shoulder.

His gaze locked onto the two women still standing in the break area, their faces pale with embarrassment, frozen in place like statues that had been caught mid-gossip.

"You’re wrong about one thing," he said, voice calm but laced with steel. "My wife wasn’t born with privilege."

The room seemed to hold its breath.

"She tried her best to live her life long before she ever met me. She worked harder than most, even when no one saw it. And what’s wrong with her finally getting a little easier now?" His eyes narrowed slightly. "What’s wrong with me giving her that?"

Neither woman replied. They couldn’t.

With a final glance that said enough, Eryx turned and reached for Lunara’s hand again. "Come on. You said you’re craving something. Let’s go, I will spoil you more."

Lunara’s heart was thudding. She held onto his hand tighter, eyes fixed ahead as they walked out.

Just as Eryx turned to walk Lunara toward the exit, a voice called out from behind them.

"Eryx!"

He paused mid-step.

Lunara knew that voice.

She didn’t have to look to know who it was. The only thing louder than the click of Seraphine’s heels was the brightness in her tone.

Lunara rolled her eyes without turning around but only for a second. Then, as if her instincts kicked in, she slipped her hand tighter around Eryx’s arm and leaned into him just a little more, like she suddenly remembered how nice it was to be married.

Eryx glanced at her sideways, clearly noticing the shift. His brow quivered. "Something wrong?" he asked quietly.

"Nope," she replied sweetly, her voice light as air. "Just... claiming what’s mine."

Before he could say anything back, Seraphine stopped right in front of them.

"What are you doing here?" she asked with a grin, like someone seeing the love of her life.

Eryx tilted his head slightly, while Lunara mumbled through gritted teeth, "Of course, because of me. What did you expect?"

Though her voice wasn’t loud, Eryx heard every word. He chuckled and, just as expected, reached over to pinch Lunara’s cheek gently, clearly finding her adorable.

"Oh, that’s the answer to your question," he said coolly. "I’m here to take my wife. She’s hungry."

His unreadable expression while looking at Seraphine shifted instantly the moment he turned back to Lunara, whose clinginess seemed to soften him completely.

"Let’s go," he said.

As they turned to leave, Seraphine’s expression darkened.

"Eryx... can we meet sometime, when you’re free?" she asked, her voice hopeful.

Eryx glanced over his shoulder slightly. "Why?" His tone was cold.

"Just to... um... explain the things I couldn’t before." Seraphine swallowed hard, clearly nervous.

Eryx’s eyes narrowed subtly. "No need. There’s nothing to explain."

Then, after a brief glance down at Lunara, he added coolly,

"And about that brunch the other day... I don’t recall ever having one with you."
