Chapter 183: Together

"Eryx, stop."

Regina’s voice rang out as he reached for the car door. He paused, exhaling quietly through his nose, his back still turned to her.

"You can’t drive," she continued, stepping closer. Then, with a sidelong glance at Lunara, she added, "And Ara can’t either. Ride with us. Leave the car here. And stop staying at that hotel."

Lunara turned sharply to Regina, her brows knitting. "Wait... you knew he was staying at a hotel this whole time?"

Her voice was calm, but her eyes blinked quickly, betraying how thrown off she was. Confused. A little hurt, even.

"I—I just thought Eryx needed some time to clear his head—"

"And you were okay watching me run around looking for him like crazy?" Lunara snapped, her voice sharp with disbelief. She looked utterly baffled, eyes wide. "You knew where he was this whole time and didn’t say a word?"

"I’m sorry, I really didn’t..." Regina’s voice trailed off. She paused, her lips parting slightly as if to offer an excuse—but none came. For once, no justification, no defense. Just silence, and the dawning realization of her own mistake settling in her expression.

Lunara scoffed softly, shaking her head. "Of course you didn’t."

"I asked her to not tell you," Eryx lied, just to ease the tension, "Let’s go." He held onto Lunara’s hand with his unwounded one.

Lunara looked at him, her expression unreadable for a moment. She didn’t argue, but the way her fingers barely curled back around him told him she wasn’t entirely convinced.

Regina didn’t say another word, perhaps sensing it wasn’t the time to push. She walked ahead to the car, unlocking it with a sharp click.

Eryx opened the car door, but before he could slide in, Lunara gently tugged on his sleeve.

"Let’s go back to our home," she said quietly, her voice raw and tired. "Please."

For a second, Eryx didn’t say anything. Just looked at her. She wasn’t crying, but her eyes... they held everything she was trying so hard to keep in.

He gave a soft nod. "We are," he murmured.

They turned and got into their car, deciding to go home—their home. Eryx reached for the wheel with his uninjured hand, his jaw set in quiet determination. But as the car rolled forward, it became clear this wasn’t going to be easy. His movements were tight, his shoulders strained with every turn. Pain flickered across his face, but he stayed silent, stubborn.

Lunara watched him for a few moments before her chest tightened.

"I’m sorry. Pull the car over," she said suddenly, her voice firm but shaken.

Eryx glanced at her, confused, but obeyed, easing the car to the side of the road. The engine hummed beneath them as silence filled the small space.

Lunara pressed her palms over her face. "What am I doing?" she whispered, more to herself than to him.

She dropped her hands to her lap, her voice trembling now. "I got angry at you. At everyone. For being selfish. For not thinking how things affect the people around them. And now look at me... I’m doing the same thing. Letting you drive like this just because I wanted to go home and pretend everything was fine."

Eryx didn’t answer right away. His gaze was steady on her, eyes soft despite the pain.

"You’re not pretending," he said quietly. "You just needed something to feel normal again."

She shook her head, biting her lip. "But hurting you more in the process?"

"We’ll be okay," he said. "We’re going home. Together. That’s what matters."

"You know what...I feel useless." She bit her lower lip, voice cracking. "Like right now, I can’t even help you drive the car, because I don’t even fucking have a driving license." Her hands cupped her face in frustration. "I can’t even help you with a small thing... how can I possibly help you with anything bigger?"

Eryx looked at her, looking at the frustration on her face, the guilt in her voice, the love behind every word.

"Staying by my side is helping me," he said gently. "You think I need someone to drive me around? No, Honey. I need someone who won’t walk away when things get hard. Someone who’ll yell, cry, argue but still stay. That’s what you’re doing. That’s everything."

"You really believe that?" she asked, her voice small.

"I do," he said, reaching across the console with his good hand and brushing her fingers. "Because when everything else falls apart, you’re still here."

"Okay," she whispered, brushing her thumb under her eye. "But I’m still gonna get the driving license later."

Eryx gave a soft chuckle, the corner of his lips twitching upward. "Good. I’ll be your first passenger. Just... warn me before you hit the gas."

Lunara rolled her eyes, the faintest smile appearing through the haze of exhaustion. "That’s not how it works, but fine. I’ll give you a five-second countdown."

He leaned back against the seat, wincing slightly but letting out a long breath. "Fair enough."

A quiet lull settled between them, not awkward but heavy in its own way. The kind that comes after too much has happened in too little time.

Lunara glanced at her phone. "I’ll just call Callum," she said, her thumb hovering over the screen. But then she paused, lifting her gaze toward Eryx. "Are you sure you still want him to resign?"

The question hung between them, heavy in the silence of the car.

"I know..." she began hesitantly, "I mean...I don’t know how it feels to be betrayed by someone you’ve trusted for so long. But if there’s even a chance you can give him a second chance..."

Her voice softened, her words more cautious now. "You saw how panicked he was when he arrived at the hospital. But then he left right after you came in, didn’t even step into the room. I think he felt like he’d crossed a line... especially after you asked him to resign."

That’s when Eryx realized, Callum wasn’t there.

He leaned back in the seat, letting his eyes close for a moment, as if the weight of everything that had happened was finally catching up.

Then he opened them and gave a small nod. "Call him."
