My Cold-Hearted Husband Wants Me Back
Chapter 155: What Was The Reason?

Chapter 155: What Was The Reason?

"No, I don’t know you."

Lunara replied instantly, blinking rapidly, trying to mask the nervousness she felt from lying. She couldn’t explain why she’d said it, but something in her gut told her it was better to lie than to tell the truth.

Lucas tilted his head slightly, eyes slow and calculating. "Then what are you doing here?"

Without hesitation, Lunara pointed at the house. "This is my house."

Lucas didn’t answer right away. He glanced at the house, then back at her, clearly unconvinced.

"This house?" he said slowly. "That can’t be right."

"Why not?" Lunara asked, trying not to sound defensive.

He gave her a look, the one that was not quite hostile, but sharp enough to sting.

"Because this is my mother’s place."

Lunara blinked. "Your mother?"

"Hmm, my mother," he said, voice flatter this time. "Are we siblings then?" It was not really a question, more like a sarcasm as he believed Lunara was lying.

Lunara didn’t flinch, though her throat tightened.

"No. We’re not," she replied, keeping her voice steady. "Lilith Hayes was my mother. She left this house for me."

Lucas’s eyes narrowed just slightly, the way someone looks when they’re trying to solve a puzzle they didn’t know existed.

"She left it to you?"

"Yes."

He let out a short, dry scoff. "Funny. My mother never mentioned anything about that. All I knew was... she’d come here once a month to clean the place."

Lunara blinked, swallowing down the unease bubbling in her chest. "Who is your mother?"

His gaze lifted, meeting hers directly. There was a flicker of doubt but his tone stayed flat.

"Regina."

"Aaaah..." she gasped, feigning surprise just a little too quickly. "Regina is—was—my mom’s best friend."

She barely finished the sentence before realizing it. The slip.

She froze.

"Best friend?" Lucas repeated, raising an eyebrow. His tone was casual, but his eyes weren’t.

"Yes?" His brow lifted further. "Just now, you said you didn’t know me."

"I said I didn’t know you," she replied quickly. "I didn’t say I didn’t know your mother. And... how was I supposed to know Regina was your mother?"

Lunara wanted to roll her eyes at herself. Still, not bad. She might’ve earned a slow clap for that one.

Lucas didn’t smile. He just looked at her for a second too long, and Lunara could feel the weight of it pressing against her composure.

"You’ve got answers ready," he said. "Quick ones."

"Maybe because you ask too many questions," she shot back, trying to keep her voice even.

That earned the faintest curve of his lips. Not quite a smirk, not friendly, either.

"So," he said slowly, "My mother was your mom’s best friend. And your mom gave you this house. Yet somehow, in all these years, I never saw you here once."

"I didn’t know about it until recently," Lunara replied. "It was... left to me after she passed."

"Lilith?" he said.

She blinked. "You know her name?"

"You mentioned it earlier." His gaze shifted, eyes unfocused for a moment like he was reaching for something just out of sight. Then his brows drew together. "I... I feel like I’ve heard it before. But—" he let out a short, frustrated breath, "it’s like trying to hold water in my hands. It just slips."

He rubbed his temple, clearly annoyed by the gaps in his memory. "I hate this," he muttered, sharper now.

Lunara nodded as she watched him carefully, her heart pounding. Nothing about this felt right. ’If this is Lucas... the one who was supposed to be dead... why is he here? And why is Regina hiding him from Eryx and Naomi?’

Her gaze dropped to the ground, furrowed in thought, struggling to piece together the cracks in this impossible reality.

"Ah, I really hate this," Lucas continued talking, pressing his fingers lightly to his temple. "Names, faces...sometimes they come in flashes, but they don’t stay. It’s like walking into a room and forgetting why you’re there."

Lunara stayed silent. Her chest tightened, watching him struggle.

He looked back at her, his voice quieter now. "Do you know who I was before?"

Immediately frozen by the sudden question, Lunara shook her head. "I told you I don’t know you." She gulped secretly then pressed her lips into a thin straight smile.

’He’s not trying to test me, right?’ She questioned inside her head, then frowning, "How long have you’ve been here? I mean...like living here?"

Lucas didn’t answer right away. He tilted his head slightly, like the question caught him off guard.

"Three years," he said finally, his voice a little rough. "That’s what she told me. I’ve been here for three years."

Lunara blinked. "You mean... living here?"

"I mean breathing, eating, existing. Mostly in bed, apparently. Walking properly again only started a few months ago." He shrugged like it didn’t matter, but the edge in his voice said otherwise.

There was a pause.

Then he added, "Still trying to remember what came before that. Not much luck."

Lunara’s breath caught. There it was. The truth slipped in quietly, but it changed everything.

"You don’t remember anything?" she asked carefully.

Lucas’s gaze dropped to the ground, his jaw tightening. "Some names. Some feelings. Nothing that makes sense."

He looked at her again. "So if you say we’ve never met before, I have to take your word for it. I wouldn’t know."

Lunara didn’t know what to say, there was a strange guilt creeping in, tightening around her ribs.

"Oh, I’m sorry for taking your time. Go on and check the house," Lucas gave a feeble smile and at that moment, the resemblance of him and Eryx was so much that Lunara blinked hard.

Lunara stood in silence for a few moments, trying to gather her thoughts. She glanced at the door of the villa before looking back at Lucas. Finally, she said, "I can’t go in. I lost my handbag on the way."

It was a white lie, but it was better than the truth. Her bag was still in Eryx’s car, left behind when she’d fled earlier.

Lucas blinked, clearly not expecting that. "Oh. Well, my mother kept the spare key in my house. I’ll get it for you."

Before Lunara could respond, Lucas turned and started walking toward the house, his steps slow, like he was still getting used to the idea of moving around freely again.

Lunara stayed where she was, her gaze fixed on the house. Her mind raced, wondering what she should do next. Should she stay? Or should she leave now before things get even more complicated?

She didn’t have much time to think about it, when—

"Lunara."

Eryx!
