My Cold-Hearted Husband Wants Me Back -
Chapter 151: That Day
Chapter 151: That Day
Eryx was just a few steps away from the car when he saw the door swing open. Lunara rushed out, her eyes wide with horror.
"Eryx!" she cried.
He turned right away, just in time to see Valerie lunging at him with a knife gripped tightly in her hand.
In one swift move, Eryx caught her wrist midair, stopping the blade inches from his back.
His jaw clenched, fury surging. "Stay back, Lunara!" he shouted without taking his eyes off Valerie, his voice laced with urgency and command.
Lunara froze a few feet away, trembling, torn between fear and the impulse to run to him.
Eryx’s grip tightened around Valerie’s wrist, his knuckles turning white. With a forceful twist, the blade clattered to the ground, slipping from her grasp like it weighed nothing.
She gasped, wincing in pain, but Eryx didn’t let go.
He kicked the knife further away with a sharp nudge of his foot, eyes never leaving hers. "You really thought you could end me with that?" he growled, his voice low and lethal.
Valerie let out a wild, guttural scream. The scream was sharp and raw as if the weight of everything finally snapped inside her. She thrashed in Eryx’s grip, fists pounding weakly against his chest, before crumpling to her knees again, her hair a tangled mess, her voice broken and frantic.
"I should’ve let them kill you that night!" she shrieked. "I should have! Why did I stop them?! Why?!"
Eryx looked down at her with a slow, mocking smirk curving his lips. He crouched slightly, tilting his head as if genuinely curious.
"Yeah," he said, voice smooth with venom. "Why?"
Then his smile vanished, replaced by a look so cold it silenced the air between them.
Valerie’s breathing came in ragged sobs, her body trembling. "They were supposed to just scare you," she whispered, as if trying to convince herself. "I didn’t know they’d... that they’d go that far..."
Eryx’s stare didn’t waver.
"But when they hit your head... when you collapsed..." she clutched her head with both hands, rocking slightly, "I screamed... I stopped them! I did! Why did I do that? Why did I stop them?!" Her voice cracked, higher and more hysterical. "I should’ve let them finish it!"
Eryx let out a humorless laugh, slow and cruel.
"Right," he muttered, stepping closer, his voice laced with venom. "You watched them beat me. Hide like a coward. Then screamed... not because you cared. But because you realized it was going too far for your plan. Isn’t it?"
Valerie’s eyes were wide, her pupils blown with panic. She shook her head, but no words came out, just a guttural sound, raw and broken.
Eryx stood tall above her, a bitter smile twisting his lips. "You didn’t stop them for me. You stopped them for you, because murder wasn’t part of your perfect little plan to ruin Lunara’s life."
"I didn’t mean—" she gasped, reaching for him again, but Eryx stepped back.
"Save it." His voice cut through her like glass. "You’ve done enough."
Behind him, Lunara had frozen just a few steps away. Her eyes locked on Eryx, trembling, both hands pressed against her chest as if trying to contain the pain rising inside her.
"Callum," Eryx called out without turning. "Take her."
Valerie thrashed the moment she heard his voice give the order. "No! No! I’m not done yet!" she shrieked, lunging again, only to be intercepted by Callum, who caught her with practiced ease, pinning her arms behind her.
"Let me go! I still have things to say! He needs to hear it! She needs to hear it too!" Valerie screamed wildly, twisting in Callum’s grip.
But Eryx didn’t look back again.
He walked straight to Lunara.
Eryx reached her in quick strides, pulling Lunara into his arms without a word. His hand cradled the back of her head as she buried her face into his chest, her breath coming in shaky bursts. He held her tightly, as if shielding her from everything, past and present.
"It’s okay," he murmured into her hair. "I’m okay, see... I’m here, safe and sound."
Behind them, Valerie’s voice tore through the quiet like a jagged scream.
"Lunara!" she cried, still restrained in Callum’s hold. "Lunara, hear me out! Please! You don’t know him at all! He’s not what you think!"
Lunara stiffened slightly, but Eryx’s arms tightened protectively around her.
"I know things... Remember the gangsters who stormed into your flower shop and destroyed everything? I know about that!" Valerie’s voice cracked, desperate and breathless. "You need to listen to me!"
"Silence her," Eryx said coldly, not sparing her a glance.
But Valerie kept struggling, gasping like she was fighting to stay relevant. "You don’t understand! He’s hiding something from you, Lunara! He’s not telling you the truth!"
At those words, Eryx’s grip faltered, just a fraction. A flicker of panic crossed his eyes, quickly masked, but real. He had almost forgotten. That day.
Two years ago.
The flower shop. The shattered glass. The overturned shelves. The gang he’d paid to corner her, just enough pressure to scare her, to push her into agreeing to marry him. Back then, he told himself it was a necessary move. But what if...
He quickly led Lunara back to the car, shielding her with his body as he opened the door. "Get inside," he said gently, trying to keep his voice steady. "Don’t listen to her."
Lunara looked up at him, brows slightly furrowed, clearly shaken but silent. She slid into the seat without a word, her eyes flicking toward Valerie once, then away.
Eryx turned, jaw tight. "Callum," he said sharply, "get her out of here. Somewhere she won’t be seen or heard."
Callum nodded without hesitation, already dragging Valerie toward a waiting vehicle, her voice growing fainter with each step.
"You’ll regret this!" she shrieked. "Lunara has a right to know! Ask him about that day! Ask him Lunara!"
The car door slammed shut, sealing off the noise.
