Chapter 143: Negative

The waiting room lights felt too bright for Eryx. He sat with his head bowed, barely noticing when footsteps echoed from the hallway.

Callum arrived first, followed closely by Regina and Naomi. The air shifted with their presence as all of them looked totally anxious and tense.

"Where is she?" Regina asked, breathless.

"Still inside," Eryx muttered, standing up slowly. His eyes searched the group, but one person was missing. "Where’s Valerie?"

Naomi hesitated, her eyes lowering. "She left... right after Lunara fell. Said she had an appointment."

Eryx’s expression darkened. He stepped closer to Naomi. "What exactly happened up there?"

Naomi swallowed hard, glancing nervously at Regina before turning to Eryx. "We were coming down the stairs. Valerie said she forgot her phone, so she went back. Lunara and I kept going."

Eryx nodded once, his face unreadable. "And then?"

"There was this moment, like someone was rushing behind us. Probably Valerie, trying to catch up with us but I really didn’t see it clearly. All I knew in that span of time Lunara suddenly flipped like she was trying to keep me from falling. The next second, she was on the ground."

Regina closed her eyes, her arms crossed tightly over her chest.

"I didn’t even realize how bad it was until she cried out," Naomi added, her voice cracking.

Eryx looked down, silent. The tightness in his chest only deepened.

"Lunara didn’t say anything?" he asked.

Naomi shook her head. "No. Nothing about how it happened. She just winced in pain, saying she might have twisted her leg and then she suddenly felt the sharp pain in her stomach."

Regina sighed, her voice shaky. "Maybe she lost her balance. Maybe it was just an accident..."

But Eryx wasn’t so sure. For now, he remained silent, his gaze fixed on the white tiles beneath his shoes. All he wanted at that moment was for the doctor to come out and tell him Lunara was safe.

The sound of rushed footsteps broke his daze.

A nurse pushed through the double doors. "We need her blood type confirmed... fast. Is there anyone here who knows it?"

Regina stood up immediately. "O-positive. That’s her type."

"Thank you." The nurse didn’t waste a second and disappeared just as fast.

Eryx looked at Regina. "Is she losing that much blood?"

Regina didn’t respond. How could she? She also didn’t know. She looked just as pale and shaken as Eryx.

Minutes dragged by like hours. The wall clock above the emergency entrance ticked louder than it should. Naomi sat quietly, wringing her hands, while Callum paced nearby. The only one missing was Valerie.

Nearly an hour later, the double doors opened again. A man in green scrubs stepped out, removing his cap. His face was serious and there was a hint of exhaustion in his eyes.

Everyone stood.

"Family of Lunara?" he asked.

"Yes—yes, me. I am her husband," Eryx stepped forward. "How is she?"

The doctor gave a small nod, acknowledging him. "She’s stable. The operation went as well as we could’ve hoped. We managed to stop the internal bleeding, and her vitals are holding steady."

A wave of relief swept through Eryx’s chest, but it didn’t last long.

The doctor hesitated before continuing. "But there’s something else I need to tell you. The patient... she was pregnant."

The words hit like a bullet. Silence fell. Even the sound of machines beyond the swinging doors seemed to vanish for a second.

Eryx blinked. "She... what?"

"Very early stage," the doctor said gently. "Six, maybe seven weeks in. She didn’t mention it to anyone?"

Eryx’s jaw clenched. "No." He paused, blinking a few times, "She probably didn’t know either." His words were muttered under his breath.

"I’m sorry to say, due to the impact from the fall, we couldn’t save the pregnancy."

Regina gasped softly, covering her mouth. Naomi stepped back, shocked.

Eryx said nothing. He stared at the floor, his hands slowly curling into fists.

The doctor glanced at him. "Physically, she’ll recover. Her uterus wasn’t damaged. She should still be able to conceive again in the future, since she is still young and healthy."

Eryx nodded numbly, though he didn’t fully hear the last part.

"She’s in post-op now," the doctor added. "She’ll wake up in a few hours. We’ll let you know when she can have visitors."

With a quiet nod, the doctor walked away, leaving behind a silence that felt heavier than before.

Eryx slowly turned and sat down again, elbows on his knees, his eyes unfocused.

"She checked every day when her period didn’t come," he whispered. "All of them came out negative." He blurted out all those words, talking to himself.

Regina turned to him, startled. "What?"

Eryx didn’t look up. His voice was low, cracked. "She told me. She didn’t want to get her hopes up... but she checked. Every single morning. Said she didn’t feel right, said her body felt different."

His hands rubbed over his face, then fell limp between his knees.

"She thought she was just being paranoid. And when the tests came back negative, she dropped it. But she still... she still hoped."

Naomi slowly sat beside him in silence.

Eryx laughed softly—bitter, broken. "What am I doing?" A loud exhale left his lips. "I should’ve taken better care of her."

Regina’s heart clenched at the sound of his voice. That laugh wasn’t real. It was the sound of someone unraveling at the seams.

Eryx shook his head, fingers threading through his hair. Then, suddenly, he stood. "I need to go."

Regina stepped in front of him. "Where are you going? Calm down first."

"I need to find her," Eryx said, his face lost and pale. "I don’t think she slipped. I don’t feel good about this. I need to find Valerie."

His eyes were red, a dam of tears building behind them. "Something’s not right. I can feel it."

"No," Regina said firmly, stepping in his way. "Not like this. You’re not thinking straight."

"I have to—"

"Wait," she cut in, her voice gentler now but still unyielding. "Wait until Lunara wakes up. Please."
