My Cold-Hearted Husband Wants Me Back -
Chapter 135: Keep The Baby
Chapter 135: Keep The Baby
The clink of silverware was the only sound at the table. Even the usual background hum of the morning felt muffled, as if the house itself was holding its breath.
Naomi sat with her hands folded tightly on her lap. She hadn’t touched her breakfast. Across from her, Regina was equally still, her fork paused halfway to her mouth.
"I’m pregnant," Naomi repeated the word she had said barely a minute ago, softly, like a pebble dropped into deep water.
Regina hadn’t responded. Not a gasp. Not a word. Just that unreadable expression she always wore when she was thinking too fast to speak.
Naomi looked down, suddenly regretting every sip of orange juice she’d forced herself to swallow before saying it. The silence was dragging.
Regina finally moved. Not to speak, but to cut a piece of toast with practiced precision. She brought it to her mouth, chewed once, then slowly lowered her fork to the plate with a faint clink.
Her eyes didn’t leave her plate as she asked, voice low and razor-sharp,
"Who’s the father?"
The question wasn’t loud, but it sliced through the room like a cold blade. The kind of tone that didn’t need volume to assert power, it demanded obedience just by existing.
Naomi’s spine stiffened. She had forgotten. Just because her mother had softened lately didn’t mean the cold-hearted woman she once was had vanished. Regina had always been capable of doing whatever she deemed necessary. And if she saw Ryan as a threat—he might be next. "He doesn’t have anything to do with this anymore."
"He doesn’t have anything to do with this anymore?" Regina’s gaze finally landed on Naomi. She deliberately raised her cup of coffee and took a slow sip, her eyes never blinking. "Ryan Davis?"
Naomi’s eyes widened, her head snapping toward Eryx, who had been quietly sitting beside her. "Did you tell her?"
Eryx sighed. "If I could find basic information about him that easily, did you really think Mom couldn’t?" He shook his head slightly. "Mom, you need to stop. She’s not in a good state."
"Not in a good state?" Regina crossed her arms and leaned back in her chair. "So she was in a good state when she decided to go that far with a man she barely knew? Good enough to decide what was best for her future?"
Naomi flinched. The sharpness of her mother’s words stung more than she expected. Her throat tightened, but she held her ground.
"I made a mistake," Naomi said quietly. "But this baby is not one of them." She exhaled hard, frustration bubbling beneath her skin. "And Mom, I dated him. I know him well."
Regina gave a slight nod, mocking more than agreeing. "Know him well? Then did you also know he wouldn’t want the baby?"
"Mom," Eryx said flatly, his voice cutting through like ice. He stood, his chair scraping against the floor.
That single word was a warning.
Regina’s eyes flicked toward him. They locked eyes for a tense beat before she looked away with a scoff.
Naomi blinked rapidly, swallowing the lump in her throat. "I didn’t ask you to be happy for me, Mom. I just hoped you’d still be my mother."
Regina stood up slowly, composed as ever. She dabbed her mouth with a napkin, then placed it neatly beside her plate.
"I’ll have the driver ready to take you to your appointment this afternoon," she said, her voice cool and deliberate. "Assuming you’ve booked one."
"No, no, no." Naomi shot up from her seat, panic flooding her voice. She turned desperately to Eryx. "You need to help me. I want to keep this baby. Eryx, please... talk to Mom."
Eryx frowned. He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. "She wouldn’t go that far, Naomi. Mom wouldn’t do something like that."
"She did!" Naomi’s voice cracked, tears slipping down her cheeks. "She did before! She killed Allan!"
The words came out like a sudden crack of thunder.
Regina, who had just reached the bottom of the stairs, stopped mid-step.
The room fell into a heavy silence.
Eryx’s head slowly turned toward Naomi, disbelief tightening his jaw. He had yelled those words before in grief, but Naomi, Naomi had never said them. Not until now.
Regina didn’t move, but her hands clenched by her sides. The sharp pain in her chest was instant, like someone had ripped something open that she’d stitched shut long ago. But she didn’t show it. Her spine straightened. Her face remained unreadable.
Without saying a word, she climbed the stairs and disappeared down the hall.
Naomi stood frozen in place, realizing what she had just said. Her hands trembled.
Eryx looked at her, quiet for a long beat. "You didn’t mean that," he said, though it came out more like a question than a statement.
Naomi covered her mouth with both hands. "I... I don’t know. I just—I panicked. I really..." she paused, closing her eyes, "I don’t know."
"I’ll handle her, just calm yourself." Eryx said eventually, standing and running a hand through his hair. His voice was low, conflicted.
Naomi reached out and grabbed his arm, her fingers trembling. "Tell her that I want to keep the baby. Please... don’t let her talk you into anything else. Don’t ask me to get rid of it. Please..."
Eryx looked down at her hand, then at her tear-streaked, exhausted face. "She probably just wants to check on your pregnancy. Don’t overthink it."
Naomi shook her head. "No, Eryx. I—"
"Naomi, I brought your caramel pudding!" Lunara’s cheerful voice cut in as she walked into the dining room, holding a small tray. But she froze when she noticed the tension in the room. "Did I interrupt something?"
Eryx exhaled heavily but gave Lunara a faint smile. "Stay with Naomi for a while, yeah? And both of you, please eat properly. I’ve noticed you’re both losing weight."
He raised his brows, gave them a pointed look, and added with a sigh, "I need to talk to Mom."
