My Cold-Hearted Husband Wants Me Back
Chapter 113: Shut Down

Chapter 113: Shut Down

Lunara stood motionless, staring down at her mother’s lifeless body. Her heart felt heavy, weighed down by a grief that she couldn’t comprehend. Four days ago, she had watched Mila slip away from her, and now, she was standing here, just inches away from her mother, whose warmth she would never feel again.

Her body felt numb, like she was detached from it, as if everything was happening to someone else. The bright hospital lights above her blurred, and the sound of the machines around her faded, replaced by a hollow ringing in her ears. She couldn’t process it, couldn’t accept that she was standing in this sterile room, watching the woman she loved, dead.

Her mind was blank. She couldn’t even feel the tears that threatened to spill. It was as if her body had shut down, refusing to let her experience any more pain.

Without thinking, Lunara turned around and walked out of the room. She passed the nurse’s station, the hallways, the doors that should have meant something but they all just felt like empty space.

She kept walking, her steps automatic, her mind a complete void. She couldn’t comprehend where she was going or why. Her hands were clenched at her sides, her pace quickening without any purpose behind it. She just needed to move, to get away from the reality she couldn’t face.

She reached the elevator without even realizing how she got there. As the doors opened, she stepped inside, pressing the button for the ground floor. The world outside the elevator felt like it was moving too fast, and yet, she was standing still.

She didn’t know what she was doing. She didn’t know where she was going.

And for the first time in her life, Lunara didn’t care.

Meanwhile, Eryx stepped out of the meeting room, his expression calm, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips. Another victory. He had successfully outmaneuvered his competition, securing what he had set his sights on. Matilda’s influence, once strong, was now all but gone, and he stood at the top, where he had always aimed to be.

As he walked down the hallway toward his office, he passed his secretary’s desk. With a glance, he noticed she was busy typing away, but he wasn’t in the mood to let her work in silence.

"Where’s my wife?" he asked casually.

The secretary looked up, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Your wife, sir? No one’s come by for the past hour. Is there something I should know?"

Eryx paused, an odd feeling creeping in. Without another word, he turned sharply toward Callum. "My phone."

Callum handed it over quickly, and Eryx strode toward his office. "Lunara," he called out, just in case the secretary had somehow missed her earlier arrival.

But the room was empty. Silent.

His brows furrowed. "What happened?" he snapped at Callum. "Find her. Call the receptionist."

He glanced at the screen of his phone and froze.

Missed calls. Too many.

But the one that caught his attention most was from the hospital.

His heart skipped. Without thinking, he dialed back.

The ringing didn’t last long. A nurse picked up.

"Hello, this is St. Alden’s General ICU."

"This is Eryx," he said tightly. "I missed a call from this number. Is everything alright?"

There was a beat of hesitation. "I believe your wife has already arrived, sir."

His brows drew together. "My wife?"

"Yes. She came to see her mother. I’m sorry, we tried reaching you earlier, but you didn’t answer... so we called Mrs. Lunara to inform her."

"What happened?" he asked, his voice suddenly low.

The nurse’s voice softened.

"I’m sorry, sir. Mrs. Lilith Hayes passed away a short while ago."

Eryx’s grip on the phone loosened as the words sank in.

=====

Eryx pushed through the hospital doors, his pace quick and purposeful. The weight in his chest grew heavier with each step toward the nurses’ station.

"I’m looking for my wife, Lunara," he said sharply. "She should’ve been here."

The nurse looked up from her clipboard, her expression softening. "Ah, Mr. Grantham, your wife... she was here earlier. She left not long ago."

"She left?" His brows drew together. "Alone?"

"She didn’t say anything," the nurse said gently. "She just stood there for a while... then walked out. We tried to speak with her, but she looked... lost. I think the news overwhelmed her."

Eryx stood still, his jaw tightening. "Where did she go?"

"I’m sorry, sir. She didn’t tell us." The nurse looked a bit guilty, her voice softening as she glanced down at her notes.

Taking a deep breath, Eryx tried to steady himself. "What about my mother-in-law?"

"She’s still in the ICU," the nurse said softly. "We haven’t moved her yet. We were waiting for the family."

Eryx nodded, jaw tight. "Callum, handle the paperwork. Start preparing everything for the funeral."

Callum gave a quick nod and headed to the counter.

Eryx was already pulling out his phone again, Lunara’s name lighting up the screen. He hit the call and strode toward the elevator, the tension in his shoulders growing with each step.

Straight to voicemail.

"Lunara," he muttered under his breath as the doors slid shut. "Where are you?"

Inside the elevator, Eryx’s fingers flew across his screen as he tapped on another contact. Regina.

She picked up almost instantly.

"Eryx? What’s wrong?"

"Is Lunara there?" he asked, voice tight.

"No... why would she be here? What happened?"

He exhaled through his nose, pressing the bridge of it with his fingers. "Lilith passed away. Just an hour ago."

When Eryx told Regina about Lilith’s death, there was a long pause on the other end of the line, a silence that spoke louder than words.

Regina’s breath hitched, and she was momentarily speechless. The news hit her harder than she expected, a sharp sting that brought a rush of memories she had buried deep.

"W-What?" Regina asked, her voice cracking before she could regain her composure.

"Mom, Lunara’s mother is dead."

The moment Eryx repeated the information, the phone slipped from Regina’s hand.
