Chapter 94: Bantering With My Boss
Chapter 94: Bantering With My Boss
(Arata)
Amidst the happiness of meeting my family and planning the trip for the next few days, texting Karsten skipped my mind.
Once I had returned to my room and changed into my nightdress, I climbed into bed with my phone.
There were 10 notifications of his calls and messages.
Damn! He was going to be furious.
{Arata! Where are you?}
{Reply whenever you see my messages.}
{You were supposed to text me.}
With every message I read I couldn’t help but feel guilty. I promised I would text him after landing and totally forgot.
I quickly typed.
{Sorry, I got busy with my family and am just checking my phone. My brother picked me up from the airport and we encountered nothing unusual.}
Hitting send, I let my phone drop on my chest, the flowery cover of my phone facing upwards as I aimlessly traced my fingers on its smooth surface.
My phone pinged instantly. Picking it up, I saw it was Karsten’s message. My heart hammered loudly in my chest.
{Yes, Caysir briefed me. But you should have texted me. I was worried.}
He sounded concerned and slightly disappointed that I didn’t text him so I tried to shift the conversation after an apology.
{I am sorry, I know I should have. How was the office today? You took your coffee?}
{It’s alright. The office was busy and coffee was not as bad as you make it. So I missed that.} He purposely teased.
{How funny, my boss is so funny....} I wished to send an emoji with tongue sticking out but refrained.
{What can I do? I have a pretty hilarious secretary...it has kinda rubbed off on me, too.} He sent next, and I couldn’t help but giggle, lying under the comfortable blanket.
Bitu had flown over and landed on my belly, watching me with his head cocked. Probably wondering why I was laughing like that.
{At least you learnt something from me.} I wrote back.
Karsten took his time to answer. In the meantime, I played with Bitu. He settled under my hand and closed his eyes.
His reply came and left me wondering.
{I certainly did. By the way, initial results have returned from the autopsy they did on the bird. Again, no fingerprints have been found but we are trying to figure out where the bird is native to. That might give us some insight. It’s not found in Marica City. As soon as I have more news to share I will.}
Sadly, I knew the answer to that. The Rose Finch was native to Angel City, I had seen plenty of them in our garden and read about them in school.
This cemented my belief in the fact that whoever was after me, belonged to Angel City and was connected to my parents’ past.
{They are abundantly found in Angel City. I believe the person is linked to my parents. Should I speak to them?}
My heart was so conflicted. I had seen them so content on my arrival; they were all smiles, and I didn’t wish to take those smiles away and worry them.
{It’s solely your decision, Arata and I will support whatever you decide. Let me handle it, if you feel like they will constrain your freedom. We will figure it out and I will keep you safe.} His message was nothing but reassuring and I couldn’t help but be relieved. My parents had been through enough and I didn’t want to drag them into this mess.
{I trust you, Sir, and I will let you handle this for now. I don’t think that person has bothered my parents so there is no need to involve and worry them.}
{All right, Arata. You must rest now. And don’t forget to text me daily, or I would have to personally fly to Angel City just to check up on you. Sleep girlfriend.} I could sense his broodiness dripping from this text message. But the part where he said he would fly over to my city must be a joke. Right?
He couldn’t be serious. With him, I could never tell.
{Good night, Sir. I will keep you posted.}
With a smile, I put away my phone and scooped up a sleepy Bitu. Giving him a small kiss, I laid him on my spare pillow so he could rest. Shifting completely under the blanket, I closed my eyes and tried to sleep.
The next morning, The soft knock on my door woke me up. I knew it was Baba. He always knocked so calmly.
"Come in," I answered sleepily, only bringing my face out of the blanket. He opened the door and entered with his signature warm smile.
"I hope I didn’t wake you up, my beautiful girl," he apologetically said, seeing I was still in bed while he was already ready for the day.
"No, I am just being lazy. Coming home does that to you I guess." I yawned, spreading my arms.
He lowered himself and gently kissed my forehead, pushing away my red locks.
"I would let you sleep as much as you would like. But you know your brother and his plans. He is getting antsy and asking us to get ready and head out for Isle of Dreams. He has everything planned, and you know tomorrow is his birthday, and he wants perfection for it."
Bitu had woken up; flying over, he settled on Baba’s shoulder–nibbling on his ear.
"I will be ready within an hour and meet you guys for breakfast. He told me we should leave early."
"We will be waiting, my dear." Patting my head again, Baba left the room, closing the door behind him.
Getting up, I took a bath and was soon ready. Aunt Huria, Uncle Lawrence, and Uncle Kail’s family would be joining us on the island.
This was indeed going to be a fun adventure and I was looking forward to it. There had been many holidays we had spent together on the Isle of Dreams and this was going to be no different. I couldn’t wait to meet them all.
