Chapter 73: Heart To Heart Talk With Mom

(Arata)

Pride was what I felt when I thought about Karsten after he decided to donate to my mom’s charity. He could have just taken it freely but he was a man of principles and paid way more than the worth of the cotton.

I decided to call Mom, once I would get home.

I arrived down at the parking lot and Caysir was waiting for me with his evergreen smile. It seemed to remain permanently etched on his face.

Quickly he opened the door for me and helped me settle in.

"Thank you!" I gave a polite nod.

"Shall we?" He inquired once he had settled in the driving seat.

"Yes!"

He started the engine and smoothly drove us out of the underground parking lot.

"I took a quick sweep of thee area, in case anyone suspicious was lurking but found no one. Don’t worry, Miss Arata, you are safe with me," Caysir spoke but didn’t glance at me through the rearview mirror, his eyes remained focused on the road ahead.

"I appreciate that." The respect that oozed from Caysir’s words was admirable. He seemed full of life and talkative and yet he kept his eyes focused on the road only and didn’t glance at me once.

By the time we arrived at my apartment, Caysir was telling me about his 4-year-old daughter and how sassy she was.

I adored kids and had a fun conversation with him. He accompanied me to my apartment, his eyes remained sharp from the moment we arrived.

One would think Caysir looked like an ordinary man but I could guess he must be highly trained. Knowing Karsten’s obsession with security, he would never hire someone not professionally trained.

Reaching my door, I used my keycard to open it and Caysir asked.

"May I check it first?" I nodded. He quietly entered the place and checked. Finding nothing out of place, Caysir exited my apartment.

"It’s clear. If you need to go anywhere or need me for anything, just give me a call. I will remain downstairs."

I shook my head and faced Caysir.

"That won’t be necessary, the building has a tight security system. I will see you tomorrow because I don’t plan on going anywhere."

"But, Mr Karsten told me to ensure I kept you safe." He seemed apprehensive of my decision but there was no point in him staying.

"I am safe in my place. If anything, I can always call you." I assured him again with a smile. This time, he listened, and we exchanged numbers.

After Caysir had left I closed the door. It could only be unlocked from outside using my card key while the manual lock was inside and only I could unlock the door.

I dropped my bag and stuff on the table, including the stupid wig. What’s the point of wearing it? Karsten already knew the real colour of my hair.

Flopping onto the lounger I extracted my phone and dialled mom. I needed to speak to her in detail. She picked up on the second bell.

"Hey! Mom. I am alone now."

"Hey! Sweetie, how are you?" Her soft and comforting voice came through. The love always dripped from it.

"I am good. Thank you for helping me out without revealing anything."

"Always, did he suspect?" She asked softly.

"I think he slightly did but once he saw that my phone didn’t have your number saved, I think we are in the clear."

I heard her sigh in relief. "That’s good."

Twirling a lock of my hair on my index finger, I slipped down on the lounger, burying my aching back in the soft cushions.

"Mom, he has asked me to transfer 5 Million dollars to Skyams Foundation."

"He did?" She sounded a bit surprised. "I wasn’t expecting him to donate such a sum."

I smiled to myself, remembering the dress he had bought for me. Leaving my hair, I twirled the rose pendant along the chain, the embodiment of his generosity.

"He is generous and a man of his word. You help him once and he will remember it."

He might be a brooding icy mountain but he did care about his employees and made correct choices.

"Have you adjusted well? He treats you right?" Mom asked, although she tried to keep the questions casual, I knew she was asking that as a concerned mother.

Karsten was very different from our family. All of us were very open and enjoyed joking around, having friendly banter and goofing off. Karsten had a serious dynamic but he cared—deeply.

He had shown that to me with his actions on several occasions now, and seriously, I had begun to enjoy his company and the moody digs he threw.

He would fit perfectly in her NovelFires though, only if she knew his true self.

Plus, who wouldn’t want to see their boss in strawberry shorts? The memory will always be one of the funniest.

"He does. He is a bit moody, but he is just. He doesn’t care about someone’s status, only their work and dedication." There were no lies in my words apart from concealing the fact he was extremely moody and rarely smiled.

"I am so proud of you, Arata Chan. You are making a name for yourself. Keep going, girl." The pride in her voice swelled my heart and tears pooled in my eyes. That’s all a child wants to hear that their parents are proud of him or her.

"I love you, Mom. How is Baba?" I asked in a voice underlying with emotions.

"Mostly buried in work, although I am trying to lower his workload so he can relax more. Talk to him whenever you get time. He misses you a lot."

Guilt plagued me with her words. Sometimes I did think of myself as selfish for leaving my parents when they needed me.

"I miss you guys too. I will visit soon. I promise."

"We look forward to having you. Your brother’s birthday is coming. Try and visit," Mom requested.

"I will." Saying goodbye to Mom, I ended the call and left the lounge to change my clothes. This was going to be the first night where I would be all alone.

Firstly, it was Stella and then Karsten stayed the night. I hoped it would pass without any events. That’s when my cell phone began to ring again.
