Chapter 242: The Red Earring
(Karsten’s POV)
After gaining control and rising to my position the first course of action was to send tens of my men out to Marica City to gather information and trace Arata.
I wanted to sneak in but knew the police would instantly arrest me and I won’t be able to help from behind bars.
Marica Police Department had already contacted the Sparia Police Department but they were my men now and refused to give out information regarding me in a subtle way.
More men with computer skills were tasked to track Arata and her phone down.
But that restlessness, that frustration wouldn’t leave my heart alone.
I wondered if she had even eaten anything?
If she had been given any water?
The very thought of her wouldn’t leave my mind even for a second.
The sight of her hair haunted me, it was going to haunt me forever.
How I had failed her, over and over again.
"Here, at least have coffee." Roshra forcefully handed me a coffee mug and I forgot when was the last time I ate something.
And yet my stomach refused to accept anything. I felt I would just vomit.
"I can’t Roshra, not until I find her." I handed the mug back and she let out a huff, shaking her head.
"How are you going to find her if you won’t look after your health? Would she want you to starve yourself?" She asked, now handing me an avocado toast.
"She wants to have nothing to do with me. I broke her heart and now she has been taken from me. I am being punished for not recognising her love." I stepped closer to the table and placed the toast back on the plate.
Ma and Rahsir sat quietly, observing me while Roshra followed me around, pleading to eat.
"Karsten, you should eat. Your Nana would be back today and I don’t want her to know about Arata’s kidnapping. She won’t be able to handle the stress," Ma emphasised. She was still poised.
"She won’t, don’t worry." I frustratedly rubbed my face, I hadn’t even slept in more than 48 hours.
Roshra’s reassuring hand found my rigid shoulder.
"You should rest at least. How will you go on like this?"
"There is no rest until I find her even if I have to sell my soul, I will." I had already contacted the Mafia Lord of Marica City. Offering him a favour if he would help me in finding any news related to this kidnapping.
People like us kept all kinds of information just to use as leverage.
Sadly, he didn’t, but he promised me his support.
The house staff arrived and respectfully stated.
"Mrs Marique is here to see you, Master."
I clicked my fingers.
"Send her in." I had summoned Urisa’s mother, hoping to find out where her daughter had disappeared. That wretched family needed to be gone from Sparia. I wanted to have nothing to do with her.
She bowed slightly and left.
"Go easy on her," Ma said out of respect for her friendship with the woman.
"It’s highly likely that Urisa has a hand in Arata’s kidnapping. So, no I am not going to go easy on her. Stay out of this," I told her flatly while crossing my arms. I had planned on telling her about their past. Hopefully, that would kill whatever sentiments Ma had left for these wretched women.
Ma sighed but chose to stay quiet. Rahsir placed his hand on her shoulder and squeezed, telling her to stay calm.
Urisa’s mom soon entered, her spine straight, hair held in a tight bun. She walked with dignity, but there was a certain fear in her eyes as they wavered from me to Ma.
"Good morning! I was summoned so early in the morning. Everything alright?" She asked in that fake accent I hated—clutching her designer purse in her hand.
"Yes, where is your daughter? I can’t locate her." I stared at her as if she was as insignificant as a worm crawling on the ground.
She slightly paled before composing herself.
"She is a grown woman, she doesn’t always inform me of her whereabouts. But she has been planning to settle down outside of Sparia."
Roshra took her seat beside Ma and watched her with a crease on her forehead. Ma tried not to make eye contact with her while Rahsir remained indifferent.
I, on the other hand, didn’t believe her lie.
"I have reasons to believe she is involved in the kidnapping of my girlfriend. Now you have two options. Either you cooperate willingly, or you will be forced to cooperate. The choice is yours Mrs Marique." I uncrossed my arms and quietly approached her.
The terror flashed on her face as she turned towards Ma.
"What’s this about Camilla? How can he?"
Ma raised her head and met her gaze.
"Cooperate, because he can. You understand who he is now."
She opened her mouth to protest but I extended my hand and asked.
"I need your phone."
Flatlining her lips, she opened her bag and reached into it. Extracting her phone she opened the code and handed it to me.
"Rahsir, take her to the guest room and lock her in. No one is to see her until I say so." My gaze travelled back towards Ma. "Anyone and I mean anyone, breaking my rules will face severe consequences."
Rahsir lazily got up and led the woman away.
Everyone chose to stay quiet as I began to scroll through her phone and checked the conversation she had with Urisa.
It was five days old when she had asked Urisa where she was, and she had replied Marica City.
I knew it. There were a few other messages where she had asked Urisa about her whereabouts but she hadn’t gotten any answer.
"From what I know about Urisa, she was extremely jealous of your relationship with Arata. I won’t be surprised if she ends up being involved," Roshra added, picking up her coffee mug and taking a sip.
"She had loved Karsten forever. Anyone in her place will be jealous," Ma answered, shaking her head. She was still in denial that her best friend and her daughter could be involved in a kidnapping.
I dialled Urisa from her mother’s phone but it was still switched off.
I continued to check when my own phone pinged. Taking it out, I saw it was a message from Caysir.
Quickly, I opened it to find a picture of a single earring.
The same ruby earrings I had gifted Arata on Christmas.
Caysir had captioned it.
{Doesn’t this belong to Miss Arata? I remember seeing this in her ear.}
My heart beat so fast in my chest at that moment that I feared it would spring out.
Hitting the dial, I called him, and he instantly picked up.
"Where did you find it?" I agitatedly asked.
This was the biggest clue we had so far because she had been wearing them the last time I met her. I was afraid she would take them off and throw them in my face, too, but in her rage, she must have forgotten.
So much was on her mind at that time.
Her pregnancy.
My betrayal.
The truth about Azul.
Caysir didn’t even hesitate as his voice came clear.
"I borrowed Mr Whittle’s jeep like you asked to run some errands. By mistake, I dropped my phone between the seats. While I was looking for it I saw something red glistening under. So I reached between the seats and grabbed it. Turned out to be Miss Arata’s earring. I wasn’t hundred per cent sure, so that’s why I sent you the picture."
My mind went numb at this revelation. A billion thoughts crossed my mind but I grimly said.
"Take the jeep and ask around Arata’s block if anyone has seen it recently, and don’t say anything to Ranold."
"On it." The call ended and I faced my mother and sister.
"I think I know who has taken Arata."
