Chapter 89: Chapter 078: Choice
Under the cold lights, three children sat against the wall, maintaining silence between them.
Ji Minghuan glanced at Filio, with many curious questions in mind.
If his second unit leads Bai Tanlang to save Filio in the future, would Filio stand by the Mentor, or would he side with his father?
If he stood by the Mentor, would I have to take out this big dog?
How many children have already been mentally controlled by the Mentor, becoming his puppets?
Will I have to fight these children in the future, taking them down one by one?
Ji Minghuan leaned the back of his head against the wall, staring absentmindedly at the ceiling.
After a moment, he spoke to Filio: "Think about it positively, it’s just you feeling that your father hates you. In fact, you haven’t seen him, so you really don’t know what he’s thinking... So don’t be so pessimistic, he might have already forgiven you."
To avoid suspicion, he added: "The Mentor will help you find him."
He thought to himself: As if... they’re eager to lock you up for life, even if they find your dad, at most they’ll just lock him up with you for research, it’ll be more efficient to have a parent-child comparison group for experiments.
"I don’t want Dad to find me..." Filio’s voice sank, "I’m really scared to see him."
Ji Minghuan glanced at his expression, rested his hand on his bent knee, and tactfully changed the subject:
"Okay, then let’s talk about me. I didn’t even eat my mom, yet I was still abandoned by my parents. I was only four years old then, they locked me in a closet and left... Actually, we’re all quite miserable, trapped in this damned place, no parents to look for us, they don’t care if we live or die."
Kong Youling hadn’t joined the conversation and was just quietly looking at the ground with a sketchbook in her arms, thinking about her mom again.
Ji Minghuan wasn’t even looking at her when he spoke, yet suddenly reached out and touched the top of her head.
"Even if we don’t have parents, at least the Mentor cares about us," Filio suddenly said.
Looks like his "educational indoctrination" on you is working well, but then again, after raising a little dog from a young age, how could it not be attached, Ji Minghuan thought.
"The Mentor works hard, taking care of so many children. If you can, you should try to be more obedient... especially you."
Filio murmured, glancing at Ji Minghuan: "The Mentor says he’s very worried about you, he talks to me about you often, saying he really likes you... but you’re very dangerous, just like me, so he can only keep you protected here."
This little demon child only seemed to talk more when mentioning the Mentor, his empty eyes slightly gaining spirit.
Ji Minghuan tilted his head back, dismissively sighed.
He said: "If he likes me so much, why doesn’t he even want to give me a TV? If you like someone, it’s about what you do, not what you say, understand?"
He looked at Filio, trying to find some psychological balance: "He wouldn’t not let you watch TV too, would he?"
Filio shook his head: "I don’t watch TV. But I do play computer games, only the Mentor doesn’t allow me to play violent games, simple ones are okay."
Ji Minghuan shrugged, silently flipping off the ceiling surveillance camera with a middle finger, realizing that others were treated like young masters, eating well, drinking well, playing games.
He sarcastically thought: "Could they be worried that I might awaken my superpower while watching TV? Is that meaningful... I ended up awakening my superpower while sleeping, as if they could stop it."
"I’m Filio," the demon child suddenly introduced himself.
"Kong Youling," the white-haired girl wrote on her notebook.
"Ji Minghuan," the boy sitting between them drew circles on the ground with his hand, reluctantly said.
Filio was silent for a while, then suddenly said: "This is the first time I’ve talked so much to kids my age, thank you."
"You’re welcome, I’m bored here too, feel free to visit often."
Ji Minghuan’s tone was like that of a boss, as if this was his friendly chat store.
"Aren’t you afraid I might eat you?" Filio asked softly.
"You still have a collar around your neck."
"That’s true."
"I think... if none of us wore suppression collars, you’d be the one who should be more afraid of me." Ji Minghuan teased, "After all, they say I would destroy the world, it won’t be just eating people then... I should swallow the Earth whole."
Filio turned his head, looking into his eyes, and whispered: "Though we’ve just met for a few minutes, I feel... you’re a good person. The Mentor also says you’re a good kid, he thinks you can’t control your powers, that’s why you’ll do those things in the future."
I feel like I’m the one controlling my superpower just fine, rather, it’s more like it’s controlling me...
Ji Minghuan dismissively thought, while sweeping through the perspective of two game machines in his mind:
At this time, Gu Wenyu and Xia Pingzhou were sleeping soundly in a hotel in Tokyo City, one could hear the faint rhythm of their breathing in the darkness.
"Can’t she speak?" Filio looked at Kong Youling’s name written in the notebook.
"She’s been like this since she was a child." Ji Minghuan nodded.
"Oh, oh, can she hear us talking?"
"She can’t hear, but she’s very good at lip-reading."
Filio was taken aback and turned his head towards Kong Youling, looking past Ji Minghuan.
"Hello." Kong Youling wrote on a piece of paper, then held up the notebook.
"So pitiful..." Filio murmured unwittingly.
"Don’t start with that, she doesn’t like people pitying her." Ji Minghuan said calmly, "She’s amazing, even with those shortcomings, she doesn’t wallow in self-pity. Whatever she does, she does it seriously, eating seriously, studying seriously. Her academic performance is very good, better than many others in the class... She just doesn’t have the opportunity to attend school."
He paused for a moment: "Because the adults at the Welfare Institute won’t let her go to school, so I don’t go either, who cares?"
Kong Youling was startled; this was the first time she heard Ji Minghuan explain his reason for not going to school. Before, Ji Minghuan always said: not going to school was because the library was enough, only fools would go, and she was just foolishly persuaded.
She hung her head low, white bangs covering her eyes, and before she knew it, her eyes turned red.
"I’m sorry, I’m sorry!" Filio thought he had made Kong Youling cry, his eyes full of panic for a moment, and he buried his head into his knees.
Kong Youling shook her head, pale strands of hair gently swaying.
"Hey, we’re friends now, right?" Ji Minghuan took the opportunity to say to Filio, "Can I touch your tail?"
Filio nodded.
"And your ears?" Kong Youling wrote, holding up the notebook covering the lower half of her face, her red eyes staring at him mischievously.
Filio was a bit stunned, then nodded again.
So, the two children rushed at him, as if he were their pet puppy; one touched his wolf ears, while the other scratched his wolf tail.
"It’s so itchy... so itchy..."
Filio initially kept a straight face but couldn’t help but laugh shortly after; he hadn’t laughed in a long time.
Just then, the lights in the detention room suddenly went out, and the entire room fell into darkness.
Then the door at the exit slowly opened, revealing a passageway. Two men in white coats stood on the corridor, wearing disinfectant masks and holding a metal ruler.
"Let’s call it a day, Xiaofei, Kong Youling, it’s time for you to go back to sleep." The mentor’s gentle voice echoed in the room through the broadcasting equipment.
In the darkness, Ji Minghuan and Kong Youling reluctantly let go of Filio’s wolf tail.
"Goodbye." Kong Youling said silently with her lips.
"Goodbye... I will come back to see you again." Filio stood up from the ground and said softly. There was still a strand of remaining smile lingering at the corner of his mouth.
"Goodbye, little werewolf."
Ji Minghuan said without looking up, silent in the darkness for a second, he gently reached out to Kong Youling sitting beside him, as if he wanted to hug her, or perhaps simply reluctant to part.
The faint light from the corridor illuminated the extended arm, but the hand quickly retracted back into the darkness.
Finally, he only gave Kong Youling a gentle nudge with his shoulder and said quietly:
"Here... you should go too, it won’t be long before we meet again."
Kong Youling nodded.
She hesitated for a while with her eyes downcast, holding her sketchbook, then closed her eyes and leaned her head gently on his shoulder. For two seconds, the warmth from the shoulder lasted only two seconds, but to Ji Minghuan, those two seconds felt long.
When he came to his senses, she stood up and walked quickly towards the exit.
Ji Minghuan sat quietly alone against the wall, watching the back of the experimenters leave, a loud "bang" sounded as the door closed again.
The bedroom was silent, with only him tilting his head, idly staring at the metallic door in a daze.
The mentor had said that next time he came, he’d talk about his parents, but after Ji Minghuan met with Kong Youling and Filio, there was still no broadcast notification of the mentor’s visit.
After a long time, there was still no sign of the door opening.
He couldn’t care less to wait any longer, who knows what scheme that old fox is concocting?
"Forget it, sleep early... Tomorrow I should hand the recording pen to Dad. When Gu Zhuo came to Japan for the Gu Zhuo Case, he had no battle suit with him, but if we notify him in advance, he will surely prepare for a confrontation before the auction arrives, hopefully, he can protect big brother then."
With this thought, Ji Minghuan lay down on the plain white bed, slowly closing his eyelids.
