Chapter 80: Stealing War Horses (2)
Opening the water bag, Zhan Qi crept closer to one of the war horses. When he was just a few steps away, he poured some water into his palm.
Stretching out his hand to the war horse, he whispered, "Good horse, do you want some water?"
Most of the war horses were intelligent because they were trained since they were young age. When the war horse heard Zhan Qi’s words, its cloudy eyes focused on the water in his palm.
After a brief moment of stillness, the war horse weakly lowered its head and licked the water directly from Zhan Qi’s palm. Upon tasting the cold, sweet water, the war horse began licking faster.
Seeing the war horse drink obediently from his palm, Zhan Qi poured more water into his palm and whispered, "Good horse, do you want to follow me?"
The war horse didn’t respond but continued drinking greedily.
Zhan Qi smiled at this sight. He waited until the war horse had enough water, then reached into the small leather pouch tied to his waistband and grabbed a handful of horse feed.
As soon as he opened the leather pouch, the fragrant scent of the horse feed wafted into the air. The other war horses, catching the scent, grew restless and began to make a sound.
Noticing this, Zhan Qi tossed the horse feed onto the ground.
The moment the horse feed was scattered on the ground, the war horses rushed over and devoured it. In less than ten seconds, the horse feed was gone.
While the war horse was still searching for more feed on the ground, Zhan Qi scanned the area to ensure the Yuezhi Tribe soldiers hadn’t noticed anything unusual. Then, he scattered another handful of horse feed.
Watching the war horses munch contentedly, he whispered, "Good horses, if you want more water and food, then come with me."
As Zhan Qi scattered more feed along the way, the war horses followed him, nibbling as they went. Soon, more and more war horses joined the growing herd.
Seeing that the other five soldiers had also successfully lured a large group of war horses, Zhan Qi nodded at them. The six of them then turned and ran swiftly toward their comrades waiting nearby.
Seeing the humans who had food suddenly run off, the war horses immediately gave chase.
Ten minutes later, Zhan Qi and the five soldiers regrouped with the others.
"Leave this place immediately!" he commanded.
With hundreds of war horses running after them, the Yuezhi Tribe soldiers finally noticed the commotion.
"Not good! The war horses are escaping!" one of the soldiers shouted in panic.
The captain responsible for guarding the war horses nearly fainted from shock when he saw that only a few war horses were left there.
Slapping one of the soldiers on the head, he shouted, "What are you waiting for? Go after them!"
"Yes, Captain!" The soldiers came back to their senses and hurriedly chased after the escaped war horses.
As the soldiers gave chase, more war horses broke ranks and joined the herd, chasing after Zhan Qi and his team.
Meanwhile, Zhan Qi and his team had mounted their own war horses and were galloping toward Xiqiang City, scattering horse feed behind them to keep the herd following.
By the time the city’s north gate came into view, more than one thousand war horses had joined them.
From the top of the city wall, Fan Wanming spotted them and ordered, "Open the city gate for General Zhan!"
The soldiers responded quickly, opening the gate to let Zhan Qi and his team in, together with the Yuezhi Tribe’s war horses.
While Zhan Qi and his men successfully stole the war horses, Kai Mu finally received the news.
"Report!" A soldier knelt before Kai Mu and breathlessly said, "Reporting to the Supreme General! The war horses on the left wing have run away!"
"What?!" Kai Mu’s expression darkened with fury at his words. A second later, he furiously asked, "How could they run away?!"
The soldier trembled and replied, "Reporting to the Supreme General. When the captain responsible for guarding the war horses noticed this, only less than twenty war horses were left."
Kai Mu exploded in rage after he listened to the report. "Idiots!"
After a moment of anger, he forced himself to stay calm and asked through gritted teeth, "Have they recovered the war horses?"
"The captain has already led a team to retrieve them," the soldier responded.
Just as Kai Mu began to calm down, another soldier rushed over.
"Report!"
A bad feeling rose in Kai Mu’s chest as he asked, "What is it now?!"
The soldier shrank back under his glare and stammered, "Reporting to the Supreme General. The west wing general has just reported. Their war horses have also run away."
Kai Mu froze at his words. A second later, his eyes widened in realization. He turned toward the city wall where Feng Xiyan stood, and his expression darkened.
Clenching his knuckles until his fingers turned white, Kai Mu roared with hatred, "Feng Xiyan! How dare you steal this Supreme General’s war horses?!"
As his furious voice echoed across the battlefield, Feng Xiyan knew Zhan Qi had completed his mission.
Now that the Yuezhi Tribe had lost most of their war horses, it was time to grind down their number.
Turning to a soldier behind him, Feng Xiyan ordered, "Go inform General Xue. Tell the special archer team to prepare for the defensive plan."
The soldier clasped his fists. "This subordinate will go immediately."
He soon found Xue Ruhong and relayed the message, "General Xue, the Great General has ordered you and the special archer team to prepare for the defensive plan."
Xue Ruhong nodded. "Understood."
With the order received, he raised his hand and shouted, "Longbow team, get into position!"
Following his order, the soldiers equipped with the longbows gifted by Bai Hanyun took their positions on the city wall. Loading arrows onto the bowstrings, they waited patiently for the next command.
Meanwhile, Zhan Qi and Mo Yuan had led nearly 3,000 war horses to the stables.
