My American magical life -
Chapter 24 - 24 24 Where do you plan to bury me
24: Chapter 24 Where do you plan to bury me?
24: Chapter 24 Where do you plan to bury me?
Existence in a capitalist society is ignored in an unprecedented way.
In agricultural societies, human survival depended on the land.
The cycle of planting in spring and harvesting in autumn bound people to the soil.
This bondage had many drawbacks, such as crop reduction due to climate risks and poverty after being exploited by the rulers.
But this bondage tightly connected people with land and family.
Through their ignorant understanding, they could clearly feel the meaning of existence in their meager lives.
Pitiable yet fortunate.
The industrial civilization is dominated by capital.
The frenzy for profit etched in the veins of capital relentlessly drives its gradual alienation of people.
The production line requires qualified screws.
The moment the industrialized production process emerged, it was destined to keep spilling out.
All industries have to immerse themselves in the self-transformation of alienating people.
Either change and join the hunt,
Or remain enclosed within oneself, becoming even more sensitive material for the sharper capital.
The factory assembly line workers are only responsible for one procedure; they are the standard screws.
Service industry workers, in the booming modern service industry, only need to take care of a part of the service process; they too have become screws.
Many screws are lured by the enticing illusions of bright lights and nightlife.
In advertisements, in propaganda, they all hint to the screws,
“This is your era, everything is equal, as long as you work hard, you can too.”
They say, life is a wilderness, not a track.
They say, you live in an era we envy.
Screws, work hard; capital needs your labor and consumption.
This is part of the consequences of alienation.
They use capital to fragment families, maximally atomize every person, allowing exploitation to easily penetrate from the skin to the marrow.
They silently divide communities, stir up various secondary conflicts, and with the megaphones of public opinion, they force you to believe their lies.
Kernor, this black boy who thought he was different, is a classic example of being alienated.
He left his home, deciding to venture out ‘like a man’ on his own.
He believed it was the cunning Asians who were too hardworking, taking away his porter job.
He hated his mother for being too conservative and nagging, hated the cunning Asians for their shameless industriousness.
Kernor had not thought for a long time.
Using his impoverished wisdom, he concocted a self-justifying logic and then never thought about it even once more.
Now, a knife is pressed against his face.
The cold blade helped him rediscover the feeling of thought.
Humans are higher animals, their brains incredibly intricate, capable of storing vast information and conducting extremely complex calculations.
Owing to Kernor’s principle of no matter how poor, never skimp on food, his brain did not let him down.
His past memories played back like a reel of film rewinding.
Kernor saw the scene when he left home, his mother crying and begging.
That woman, pleading miserably, tears and snot streaming down her face.
He remembered.
“I’m sorry!
Sorry!
I was wrong, sorry!”
Kernor remembered how to apologize.
Cheng Daqi’s lips were pressed tightly together.
He hadn’t expected, hadn’t expected the black brother he was pinning down to have such spine.
Just an excuse to plead for mercy, and yet he hesitated for a full half minute.
Cheng Daqi’s hanging heart finally settled down.
Almost couldn’t hold in there.
“Sani, do you accept his apology?”
The black girl was desperately anxious, the silence just now was so prolonged.
She couldn’t understand why Kernor wanted to die so badly.
A knife to your head and you’re not afraid?
Obviously, he’s a pure fool; there’s no point in fussing with a fool.
Now that things have finally settled, she naturally won’t hesitate.
“I accept, do you want to get up first, Cheng?”
Sani hadn’t been to school much, but she understood the gravity of the situation.
Her words gave Cheng Daqi a small step to descend gracefully, equivalent to a timely assist.
Cheng Daqi swore, this was the last time; he would never again face a black person head-on.
He truly couldn’t understand the behavior of black people.
Just now he really thought Kernor was bent on dying, thus for a whole half minute he didn’t utter a word and just braced against the knife’s edge.
“Alright, Mr.
Kernor, how can you be so careless, lying on the ground like that?”
Wrapping his arm tightly around Kernor’s right arm, Cheng Daqi smiled as he helped the black brother up.
“My doctrine forgives an enemy only once; you won’t get another chance.”
This excuse sounded like a joke, quite amusing.
But for the lower-class blacks in America, it was just right, very effective.
“I was wrong, I understand, I understand, can I go now?”
Kernor hastily answered, over and over.
Cheng Daqi released Kernor, gently patting him on the shoulder.
“There’s an old saying in Hua Country, ‘No fight, no acquaintance’, how about we add each other on Bald Eagle?”
Another fight?
Kernor’s legs, having just regained strength, went soft again.
The suffocating feeling of not being able to breathe had only passed a few minutes ago; he was truly afraid of dying, very very afraid.
This man from Hua Country was too terrifying.
Just hearing about getting hit again, Kernor felt his breathing start to go abnormal.
“YE, add Bald Eagle, add Bald Eagle.”
Cheng Daqi’s latter request he dared not refuse.
He even felt the request was too trivial.
This Hua Country man beat him up without robbing anything.
Simply an angel!
Kernor’s addition on Bald Eagle was intentional, Cheng Daqi could check up on Kernor through it to prevent any future friction.
This is called knowing others, knowing oneself, preventing trouble before it happens.
Watching Kernor run away without looking back, Cheng Daqi didn’t hesitate.
Two street fights had occurred one after the other, it had to be at least one star’s worth of trouble, time to leave this place as soon as possible.
“Let’s go together, the police might come soon.”
Choosing a direction different from Kernor’s, Cheng Daqi left with Sani together.
…….
After running for more than ten minutes, the two of them, out of breath, sat against the wall deep within an unnamed alley.
Cheng Daqi was reflecting on his recent choices.
He still couldn’t understand why Kernor, unafraid of dying, had resisted for a full half minute waiting for his knife.
It just didn’t make sense, it simply didn’t.
Sani was just a girl not even twenty, she didn’t know how to face what had just happened.
She was used to quarrels on the street, but today’s event went far beyond her expectations.
The Black girl twisted her hair in frustration.
Life is hard, Sani sighed.
Life on the streets of America was too difficult; better to eat first.
“What about dinner, I still have a lot of bread and biscuits previously collected in my tent, just not much water.”
The relief food wasn’t necessarily okay every day, so Sani had hoarded quite a stockpile of supplies.
Cheng Daqi laughed and nodded in reply.
“Let’s take a detour home, I was too nervous just now.
You should have spoken up to stop me.”
He was truly scared afterwards.
Kernor’s behavior was utterly baffling.
A knife at his neck, and he wouldn’t submit, resisted a whole half minute.
That half minute had almost driven Cheng Daqi to despair.
The most tense moment of his two lifetimes.
The funny thing is, Cheng Daqi was doomed not to understand the answer behind all this.
What he thought was: JBM, who gets it, those Black people are really too stubborn.
Actually: Kernor’s brain was pretty much a decorative piece, it took him half a minute just to consider begging for his life.
“I was scared to death too, you suddenly rushing out like that, I had even figured out where I’d bury you after you got beaten to death.”
Sani led the way ahead, retorting Cheng Daqi’s comment.
What do you mean I should have stopped you, did you give me a chance?
You resolved the fight in two seconds, how could I stop you?
“Sani, are you that eager to see me dead?”
“No, but today you didn’t act like an Asian, you actually took down that Black guy in seconds.”
“You are a Black guy yourself.”
“F**K, Black people can call other Black people ‘Black guy’, but you can’t, OK?”
“So what do you think an Asian should be like?”
“I don’t know how to put it, but most aren’t like you, you’re the first Asian I’ve seen like this.”
“Alright, can I ask a question?”
“I don’t like you, nor am I moved by your stupid courage, got it?”
“It’s not that, why do you always think about this.”
“Then you can ask.”
“Where were you planning to bury me?”
“Near Red Street, there’s a public shelter for stray dogs, and euthanized strays are buried there.
I was planning to dig up one of the dog graves and put your ashes in there.”
“Sani, you really are a big sweetheart.”
Cheng Daqi’s tone was fiercely helpless.
What could he do?
The Black neighbor girl was already good enough.
Would help collect your body after death, even help you dig a grave.
But it still felt infuriating!
“Of course!”
Sani slightly lifted the corners of her mouth, laughing in reply.
