Chapter 404: 404 households also have backing.
"Have you guys heard that the Guard Leader of the Yuan Family was just beaten to a pulp, arms and legs all broken, and even Young Master Yuan got roughed up like a pig’s head?" someone excitedly said in the crowded throng of the Chamber of Commerce.
"Yuan Family, what’s it to me if they got beaten?" a merchant selling Elixirs impatiently said.
Given the previous state of affairs, even the Nanyan Chamber of Commerce wasn’t too peaceful, he thought as he hurried to sell off his Elixirs and call it a day, to avoid getting caught in the crossfire. He had no time to gab about other matters.
"You don’t even know about this? The Yuan Family, I heard, is the one opposing the Nanyan Chamber of Commerce. Their guards were the ones beaten up by the Yuan Family’s Guard Leader," the person explained.
"What, the Nanyan Chamber of Commerce acted so swiftly? Not only avenging their servant but also beating up the other family’s Young Master?" The merchant was taken aback, no longer in a hurry to clear out his stock, and asked out of curiosity.
"Yeah, it turns out the Nanyan Chamber of Commerce has strong backers too; they quickly got revenge for them," the person said with a sigh.
"Nonsense, if someone can establish themselves in Heishi City and even sign a Heaven and Earth Contract with Long Yan Academy, how could they not have any backers? You guys are just worrying over nothing," a middle-aged man with a slightly older appearance disdainfully said.
"Pff, you’re just stating the obvious after the fact. You were just as scared as we were not too long ago, no better off at all," the merchant said irritably.
"Heh heh, wasn’t I just taking precautions? I’ve been around and seen so much over the years; I’ve grown more cautious," the middle-aged man said, slightly embarrassed.
"Alright, alright, no need to worry about anything now. Let’s just focus on our business with peace of mind," the first person said with a laugh.
"Shoot, I sold at a loss just now." It was only then that the merchant realized and quickly removed the "fire-sale" sign from the front of his stall.
"Ey, weren’t Vitality Nourishing Pills just 500 taels each a moment ago? How come it’s now one thousand taels?" A plump merchant saw the newly installed sign and asked in surprise.
"That was then, this is now," the merchant said, changing his obsequious demeanor and stood tall and proud.
Before, in order to sell his Elixirs quickly, he had humbled himself and put on a submissive act. It was about time for him to strut proudly.
"We’re all in the same line of business, how can you operate without any integrity, raising and lowering prices at whim?" the plump merchant complained.
"Times change. If you want to buy, you’d better hurry; otherwise, the price might go up again soon," the merchant said nonchalantly. They say no merchant without guile, and any sense of integrity was meant for dealings with others, not among competitors in the trade.
No sooner had he finished speaking than other merchants who caught wind of the news began changing their signs.
"You don’t know yet, do you? Just a moment ago, the Yuan Family’s Guard Leader and Young Master Yuan..." Seeing the puzzled look on the plump merchant’s face, someone beside him kindly clued him in.
"I’ll take all of your Vitality Nourishing Pills," the plump merchant said as soon as he grasped the situation, without a second’s hesitation. He pulled out a silver note and threw it at the merchant, lunging for his stall like it was a race.
He was inwardly regretting not buying earlier. Had he known it would turn out like this, he would have acted sooner rather than being greedy for a small bargain. Who would have thought that such a turn of events would happen in less than four hours?
But it wasn’t his fault, after all. Who would have guessed that the Nanyan Chamber of Commerce had such a formidable backer, acting so decisively and swiftly that even they were caught off guard.
