Chapter 52 Leftovers
Chapter 52: Chapter 52 Leftovers
Bangbangtang kept twisting and turning, waking him up without needing her to call.
She thought he probably hadn’t fully woken up yet, as he touched Bangbangtang’s smooth fur and stared at her in a daze.
"Ahem!" She cleared her throat, "If you’re awake, come out and eat! Grandma asked me to call you!"
The aroma of meat wafted through the air; Grandma must have uncovered the soup pot’s lid. Bangbangtang, who was pretending to sleep, swiftly slid off him and darted towards the source of the delicious smell.
He awakened from his dream and got up.
Tu Hengsha glanced instinctively at the Xuan paper on the table. The characters were his, and at that moment, they appeared much clearer. Over the past twenty years, he had improved remarkably.
Speaking of which, she still treasured a piece of his calligraphy! He wrote it when he was in the third grade. In her eyes, it already had the style of a budding calligrapher, with handwriting as neat as a copybook, bearing Xu Gui’s seal. It was exhibited in the bulletin board, but after the summer vacation, he left the school. The exhibited works were replaced in the new semester’s bulletin board; some were claimed, and those unclaimed became waste paper. Therefore, it was her who picked it up while collecting trash.
She stood in a daze at the door, and he brushed past her shoulder, his faint scent overshadowing the mugwort aroma in the room.
Four people eating twelve dishes was certainly too much. Besides Xu Grandma setting aside a portion for Cui Pei, the four of them ate less than half.
While helping Xu Grandma clean up, Tu Hengsha wondered what to do with the large table of leftovers, when she heard Su Ronggui say, "Grandma, pack all these dishes for me."
"All of these?" Grandma Xu pointed at the dining table, somewhat surprised.
"Yes, all of them," he said decisively. "Grandma, I rarely get to eat your cooking, let me take some back so I can enjoy it more!"
Grandma was, of course, delighted that her grandson loved her cooking and immediately picked the better-looking dishes to pack for him.
It was late, and the courtyard lights automatically turned on, casting a warm glow amidst the descending night. The breeze carried a subtle fragrance of flowers.
It was a perfect time for leisurely chatting, but Grandma Xu urged Su Ronggui to leave, "It’s late, better go back early for rest. It’s not safe late at night."
Su Ronggui, who was pushing thirty, gave a bitter smile. In Grandma’s eyes, he was still that little boy who had to come home on time when it got dark.
"And you, young lady, it’s not safe for a girl to go back alone. Gugu, you’re the man, make sure to escort her," Grandma also gave Tu Hengsha a small bag containing zongzi and some fruit.
"Okay," Su Ronggui readily agreed in front of Grandma.
He drove there, so in front of Grandma Xu, Tu Hengsha had no choice but to get into his car. Watching Grandma and Fan Yue’s figures gradually become distant in the rearview mirror, she sighed.
"What are you sighing for? Eating and taking things, still not satisfied?" he asked while driving.
She rolled her eyes, puzzled why he suddenly wanted to talk to her. Didn’t he agree that he didn’t want his personal space disturbed? She pointed ahead, "Drop me off at the alley entrance; I’ll take a ride back myself."
He ignored her, driving past the place she indicated.
Her finger still hovered in the air when she realized the car made a turn onto the road leading to her home.
"Eh? You knew my house was in this direction?"
His face was stiff, "No, I didn’t."
"..." Some things never change! Impossible to communicate!
"My house is in this direction too!"
"..." Alright then. "By the way, taking so many dishes back, how will you eat them?" she imagined. Based on Su Rongxing’s behavior, people in his home probably wouldn’t eat leftovers.
He didn’t answer.
Silence—either it erupts or fades away in silence...
So, Tu Hengsha kept quiet. At this moment, she heard his voice rise slowly and deeply, "Every time I visit Grandma, she would cook everything I love. I never finish it all. After I leave, sometimes Grandma eats the leftovers for a week alone. Later, I found out, so I started packing them to take with me every time I left."
