Chapter 44 Colleagues
Chapter 44: Chapter 44 Colleagues
That night, when Tu Hengsha closed the drawer, her heart, which had been tentatively reaching out little antennas, eager to get closer to Su Ronggui, immediately retracted, returning to its usual state of vigilance and defensiveness. As a result, the next time she encountered him at the newspaper office, she was able to be calm and composed, treating Su Ronggui just like any other colleague. When they ran into each other, it was merely a "Good morning," or "Hello," with no further conversation.
Even Hao Ren had noticed something was up.
One day, while Tu Hengsha was sitting alone in the cafeteria having lunch, Hao Ren scooted over with his bowl and quietly asked, "Did you really fall out with Su Ronggui?"
Tu Hengsha’s expression remained unchanged, "How could that be? Do I seem like someone who doesn’t know how to weigh the consequences?"
"Then you... just don’t talk to him anymore?" Hao Ren blinked his eyes.
"No!" Tu Hengsha smiled, "I was never that close to him, to begin with, what’s there to talk about?"
"Well, you..." Hao Ren wanted to mention the rice dumplings she’d given, but thinking about that day’s events made him reconsider and swallow his words back down.
Tu Hengsha understood what he meant, so she laughed and said, "It was because my first assignment had been with him! Plus, we were together in the disaster area, and he helped me out a lot there. I just wanted to thank him."
Hao Ren nodded and added, "But Su Ronggui is a good person; he’s just not the talkative type. He seems cold, but he’s always so gentle with Su Rongxing!"
Tu Hengsha finished her last few bites of rice with a smile and didn’t respond. A younger sister, of course, should be spoiled. If she had a brother, wouldn’t he be good to her too?
"I’m done! Heading back!" She stood up, holding her bowl.
As she was leaving the cafeteria, by coincidence, she ran into the Su siblings walking side by side.
Tu Hengsha was quite surprised because Su Rongxing never ate in the cafeteria. Su Ronggui pampered her, taking her out for lunch every day.
As they approached, Tu Hengsha could hear Su Rongxing complaining, "I’ll make do with the cafeteria today, but tomorrow you’d better treat me to a feast!"
"Alright." Su Ronggui was always patient and gentle with Su Rongxing.
Speaking of which, Tu Hengsha confronted the two.
She didn’t avoid them, nor had she ever thought of avoiding them. What was there to dodge in a normal coworker relationship? She nodded and smiled generously, "Eating?"
Su Ronggui’s gaze lingered on her face for a moment, and he only gave a slight nod with an "Mhm" before going in with Su Rongxing.
After they passed each other, Tu Hengsha could still hear Su Rongxing’s playful voice, "Oh, you tricked me! Tomorrow’s a holiday, so we’ll definitely have a big meal at home! Doesn’t matter! I want you to treat me alone! Oh, and tomorrow, you’re coming with me to..."
Where they were going, Tu Hengsha didn’t hear, but their conversation reminded her of one thing: she had to send Bangbangtang away tomorrow.
Despite her reluctance, that evening, she gave Bangbangtang a thorough bath, grooming its fur until it was shiny and sleek. With its now plump and short body due to overnutrition, it looked very much like the pampered son of a wealthy landowner.
The next day, she took Bangbangtang to Fan Yue’s house.
Fan Yue and her husband, Cui Pei, were celebrating their second wedding anniversary with the significant event of moving to a new home. Since Cui Pei liked houses with yards and there happened to be an old courtyard partially for rent, they unhesitatingly rented it. It was a housewarming occasion of sorts, so Tu Hengsha also brought a housewarming gift along.
