She steadied herself and without regard for what she originally planned to say, directly stated, "The rice dumplings, my mom made them by hand. They’re not dirty at all."

He still remained silent.

She didn’t know what else to say. Perhaps, this was what made her sad? Yes, she was just not reconciled to her mother’s hard work being disdained by these people!

He waited for a moment but didn’t hear her continue.

"Is that all?"

She thought for a moment and nodded. Yes, that was it.

Then she heard his emotionless voice, "Your mom’s rice dumplings being dirty or not has nothing to do with me. I don’t like rice dumplings; we’re not familiar enough that you can give them to me to eat. We never were, and we never will be. I think you may have misunderstood some things.
