Chapter 300: Chapter 290: You Can Live Well
He still hadn’t replied.
He sat in front of the computer, his phone charging at his side. He glanced at it every few keystrokes, fearing he might miss a message from her, but the phone’s screen remained dark all through the night. Meanwhile, on his computer, he wrote and deleted, deleted and wrote, until dawn approached and there was still nothing.
He had never been like this before...
He remembered what she had said, "When I didn’t have a boyfriend, I was never afraid of the cold alone, and I won’t be afraid of it now or in the future! The world doesn’t stop for anyone!"
He wanted to say that when he didn’t have a girlfriend, he was always just fine on his own. But unlike her, he feared that from now on, he may not be okay. She might be completely fine without him in her world, but what about him without her? He couldn’t...
Sitting on the carpet, he watched as the gray of dawn slowly brightened outside the window.
The alarm on the phone by his hand rang.
He picked it up and finally sent her a message: "Babe, are you up? I’ll come pick you up."
Tu Hengsha, of course, had seen the message—that, and the one from last night the moment it arrived. She just didn’t want to respond, but this morning she replied: "No need."
Brief, without giving an inch.
Even if he could type just one more word?
Holding his phone, he felt a choke in his chest, both painful and suffocating.
He didn’t know what to do. He thought he was both boring and a bit silly, not knowing how to please or cheer people up, and he had never chased a girl before. He had no clue how to win her back now.
He sat there, lost in thought. Then suddenly he had an idea, jumped up from the room, forgetting even to put on his jacket.
Sister Qian was already up, busy preparing breakfast in the kitchen. Seeing him, she hurriedly said, "Mr. Su, breakfast will be ready soon!" thinking he was there for breakfast.
"Mmm." He grunted, distractedly checking his phone as he continued to rummage around the kitchen.
"Mr. Su, what are you looking for?" Sister Qian, with her lifetime of experience, knew men couldn’t find things easily. Her husband couldn’t even find his clothes when they were right under his nose, let alone finding something in the kitchen. When had Mr. Su ever cooked?
"Do you have any brown sugar?" he asked.
"Yes, yes! Right here!" Sister Qian fetched it for him. "It’s still from the last time we bought it for Miss Tu to make dessert."
Mmm, she indeed liked things made with brown sugar.
Strangely, hearing Sister Qian mention her made his tight heart relax a bit, and his expression softened, "Do you have a whisk and some cheese?"
"We have a whisk, but no cheese," Sister Qian answered, puzzled, "What do you need these for so early in the morning?"
"Never mind then." He said and went out again, only to come running back a few minutes later with a tea can in his arms.
"Tea early in the morning?" Sister Qian nodded, "That’s good, warm up, it’s too cold outside."
He wasn’t making tea; he started bustling around the kitchen.
Sister Qian grew more puzzled, "Mr. Su, what are you trying to make? Let me help?"
"No need, I’ll make the milk tea," he said, following a recipe on his phone without looking up.
"Milk tea?" Sister Qian looked around. "This isn’t how you make milk tea. When I used to take kids to buy milk tea, they always mixed it with milk tea powder, and it became fragrant instantly. Nobody really uses tea and milk!" She observed further and then said, "And you’re using these tea leaves? Aren’t these the ones that cost thousands last time?"
"Hmm, mixing with powder isn’t healthy," he replied, already immersed in the world of milk tea.
Sister Qian didn’t say anything further but remembered something else, pulled out an accounting book, and handed it to him. "Mr. Su, here’s last month’s expenditures, all recorded here. The money Miss Tu gave me is almost spent after buying groceries for a few days."
He hesitated while making the milk tea—yes! "Then call her, ask her to come over tonight, pay you your wages, and give you the household expenses for this month." She was managing his finances, after all!
"Mr. Su, can’t she just come back with you after work?" Sister Qian didn’t know what had happened. "Miss Tu hasn’t been here for days; is she back from her business trip?"
"Hmm, she’s back," he thought, already looking forward to Sister Qian calling her back.
He kept busy for a while, making a total of five cups. The first four tasted indescribable, but the fifth was barely drinkable. He was very nervous and let Sister Qian try it, earning her affirmation.
"It actually tastes good! Better than the store-bought mixed one! This fragrance isn’t from artificial flavors; it’s real milk and real tea!" Sister Qian commented.
He finally felt relieved. "It’s missing pearls." She liked pearls, always asking for an extra serving in her milk tea...
He looked up how to make pearls, and it didn’t seem too hard. He told Sister Qian the ingredients so she could buy them sometime. Then, he grabbed the milk tea and left for work.
He was early when he arrived at the newspaper office. He felt the cups of milk tea—they were still warm, luckily not leaking as they weren’t sealed well at home.
He entered carrying them.
He had never been so nervous in his life...
Carrying them over, his heart was about to burst from his chest. The indoor heating made him sweat as he held the milk tea.
At the entrance of the editorial platform, he tiptoed—a stealthy act, as if he were a thief, something he had never done before...
After peering inside and seeing she hadn’t arrived yet, he breathed a sigh of relief, quickly walked in, passed her desk, set down the milk tea, and swiftly walked away back to his own desk.
He turned on his computer, feeling like he wasn’t controlling his hands. His hand trembled as he held the mouse, and it trembled on the keyboard—all his attention was on the sounds from outside: footsteps, voices. Which was hers?
As for what was on his computer screen, he didn’t even notice until Deng Lin walked past and suddenly slapped him on the back, laughing, "Yo, what are you doing so early in the morning? Overworked last night? Or feeling overwhelmed? Wanting to buy this stuff?"
What stuff? He frowned and looked—speechless...
In his nervous mouse clicking, when had he clicked into an advertisement for... enhancement products?
Deng Lin added seriously behind him, "I know young men are vigorous, but you should be careful. Using this stuff too much is harmful! Think about the future. Don’t just seek temporary pleasure; steadiness brings lasting results. I can tell by your complexion that this isn’t good..."
"..." He actually wanted to harm himself once, swiftly closing the page. "Stop talking nonsense. I just didn’t sleep last night!" An overnighter was inevitable, and the torment had taken its toll, so how could he not look exhausted?
Deng Lin laughed, "See, see? I wasn’t wrong. Take it easy..."
"..." Alright, the more he explained, the worse it got.
Meanwhile, Tu Hengsha’s voice could be heard outside, talking and even laughing with someone...
His heart instantly felt sore—without him, she indeed could live just fine...
