Mr. Su's Love Investigation Report -
Chapter 293 - 283 The Murderer
Chapter 293: Chapter 283 The Murderer
Baiji Hotel Banquet Hall.
A lavish yet understated engagement party was being held.
There weren’t many attendees, only a few close friends and family, and company management, yet the atmosphere was solemn and elegant, not without warmth.
Su Rongxing and Su Ronggui were dressed in formal attire, mingling among guests, but only Su Rongcheng from the Su family appeared. It was said that Shang Qingmei had been unwell at home since an incident and Xin Wan was taking care of her.
The guests understood, even automatically assuming the engagement party was to bring joy and offered their congratulations to the two.
Changqing, who was supported and groomed by Su Zhen and was an employee of the company, also brought two glasses of wine over.
Su Ronggui’s phone vibrated in his pocket. He took it out and glanced at it as Changqing handed him a glass. "I wasn’t sure how to address you; I wanted to call you second brother. I’ve always regarded Mr. Su as a father. This incident has saddened me greatly... I owe Mr. Su a great debt..." Changqing’s eyes were red, seemingly struggling to hold back. "Never mind that; today is a happy day. Congratulations to you!"
He raised his glass and clinked it with Su Ronggui’s, then turned to Su Rongxing, "Miss Su, congratulations to you."
Su Ronggui nodded with his glass, drinking with Changqing.
After, Changqing kept talking to them about a lot—Su Zhen’s support during his growth, his return after joining the company, to the current situation of the company. He spoke passionately at first, then his eyes grew red.
Su Ronggui listened, suddenly yawning. Changqing quickly said, "I’ve said too much; I’ve been feeling a lot lately and had two drinks, sorry."
The three stood by the sweet soup station. Changqing served a bowl of sweet soup to Su Rongxing, "Miss Su, you’re a lady, so I won’t toast you with wine, but with sweet soup. May your life be as sweet as honey."
"Thank you."
Su Rongxing was about to take it when she saw Changqing suddenly slip on something underfoot, falling forward and spilling the entire bowl onto Su Ronggui’s chest, the dark formal attire and white shirt now stained with a glaring yellow and red blotch.
"I’m sorry... I’m sorry... I..." Changqing was quite flustered.
"No problem," Su Ronggui set down his wine glass. "I’ll go to the restroom."
In the restroom, he took off his coat, turned on the faucet, and gently cleaned the soiled area. His calm face showed no change, only his eyes fixed on the mirror.
Suddenly, he set his clothing aside, frowning deeply, hands on the mirror, appearing dizzy or uncomfortable, struggling to stay upright.
At that moment, the restroom door opened, and in came someone with a black headscarf mask, moving swiftly. A gloved hand covered Su Ronggui’s mouth and nose, while the right hand brandished a knife to slash at Su Ronggui’s neck.
If Su Ronggui really had a condition, this stroke would have severed his carotid artery, splattering blood everywhere. But, just as the blade came within millimeters, he blocked it forcibly, the other hand grasping the assailant’s wrist tightly, and they engaged in a brief standoff.
This standoff was brief indeed, only a second or two from when the masked assailant entered to when Su Ronggui resisted the attack, then the stall door opened and several people burst in, footsteps resounded outside as Su Rongcheng led a crowd in.
They easily apprehended the masked person. Su Rongcheng yanked off his mask, revealing the face beneath—Changqing.
"Why?" Su Rongcheng kicked him in bewilderment.
Changqing looked at Su Ronggui, eyes full of resentment and regret, "You were pretending? You obviously drank the wine!"
Su Ronggui took out his phone, showing it to him, a message appearing on the screen: the wine is tampered with, don’t drink it, likely spiked with a sedative.
"I didn’t drink," Su Ronggui said.
Tonight’s setup was meticulous; waitstaff weren’t waitstaff, guests weren’t all friends. Of the few guests, half weren’t actual guests. Each person was under watch; for Changqing to act unnoticed was no easy feat.
"Turn him over to the police, take him away," Su Rongcheng said, turning to leave.
Ning Shiqian and the task force captain handling the Fan Yue crash case came with their team to "attend" the engagement as friends. Su Ronggui feared their "target" too conspicuous, so they hadn’t shown themselves. Now appearing to cuff him, Ning Shiqian gave Su Ronggui a deep look, thinking, Your move was too risky! Had they told him sooner, he wouldn’t have agreed!
Su Rongcheng returned to the banquet hall, taking a microphone. "Dear friends and family, coworkers, colleagues, good evening. We’ve invited you here tonight to let you know, my father, Mr. Su Zhen, is back."
At these words, the guests were taken aback. Wasn’t this an engagement party? Besides, wasn’t Su Zhen arrested for suspected murder?
Su Rongcheng continued, "I know there are doubts in your hearts, but my father’s proven unrelated to the murder case. Now, he’ll speak to you himself."
Su Rongcheng finished, applauding, as Su Zhen indeed appeared at the banquet hall door.
Su Zhen, unseen for ages, except for being slightly thinner, hadn’t changed much. He took the stage, emotions surfacing even before speaking. "Dear old friends," he began, tearing up, sweeping his gaze over the banquet hall, nearly choking, "Friends, this may be the last time we gather here..."
Baiji had been the Su family’s industry, but after this, it would be no more.
"I, Su Zhen, have done good, played sly, got involved in intrigues, lived a magnificent life, only to end in a scam. It’s my own doing; I must accept and bear what I should, but I let you down, let the public down. I’m ashamed, regretful..."
Meanwhile, in the restroom, the cuffed Changqing saw Su Rongxing at the corridor’s end, still in her dress, beautiful, proud, like a true princess.
Alas, this would be the last time he ever saw her.
"I... I have one word to say before I go," he petitioned the police.
The police permitted.
He turned to gaze at the girl afar, calling her, "Rongxing."
He had never called her that, though he always wanted to, "Do you remember our first meeting?"
Of course, Su Rongxing could not remember, for such a murderer, she deeply loathed, wanting no shared memories.
"You were my princess, always will be."
