Chapter 273: Chapter 263: Will You Forgive Me?
The events that followed were chaotic and messy.
His car was so badly hit that the traffic police had to handle it. But she held a file bag in her arms, feeling as though she were carrying a bomb; she was eager to get rid of it, but she was full of concerns.
Su Ronggui’s reaction and her mother’s safety weighed heavily on her mind.
However, she simply could not compromise on this.
Su Ronggui stayed behind to deal with the car accident while she took a police car to the sub-bureau. Because she was escorted by police, Su Ronggui wasn’t that worried anymore, only reminding her to wait for him at the bureau, then he sent her off in the car.
On the way to the bureau, she was undergoing an ordeal of the heart, as if she were half iceberg, half flame. She stood on the border between ice and fire, with no chance to sway, no choice to make, taking the one path left, even if it meant enduring torment, even if flames and icebergs lay ahead, she could only go on.
When she handed this file bag to the captain of the criminal investigation team at the local bureau, for a split second, the sinister voice echoed in her ear again, "Hongliu Road Primary School’s teacher, Shu Hui? Teacher Shu Hui goes out to buy groceries every day at noon..."
She suddenly clutched the file bag tightly.
But it was just for a moment, the next second, she let go.
The moment she let go, she felt her heart fall to the ground. She felt settled, yet all her strength seemed drained away, and she nearly couldn’t stand, leaning her elbows on the desk.
"What’s wrong? Are you hurt?" The captain of the criminal investigation team asked her.
She straightened up, shook her head, "Captain, I have two more questions. First, I’ve seen what’s inside this, it should be related not only to Fan Yue’s case, please hand it over to the relevant departments after collecting evidence. Second... since I got this, my family and I have been threatened, if possible, could I request protection for my family?"
The captain agreed.
She was in utter confusion and forgot that Su Ronggui had asked her to wait for him to pick her up. But even if she had remembered, she wouldn’t have waited; she was worried about her mom and had to go home as soon as possible!
So, she called Shu Hui while still at the bureau, but no one answered.
Instantly, her heart hung up in suspense, she kept calling!
This time someone answered, but it wasn’t Shu Hui; it was a colleague from the same office, who told her, "Little Sha, your mom’s not here, she was just called out by someone, said someone was looking for her."
She was utterly shocked, "Who? Who was looking for her?"
"I don’t know, it was a man!"
She bolted out, with the captain of the criminal investigation team calling after her, "What happened? Is there anything I can help you with?"
She turned around, her face full of tears, "My mom! Something might have happened to my mom!"
"Let’s go!" The captain also grew tense, personally driving, taking her to school.
School hadn’t dismissed yet; everything on campus was orderly. On the playground, children in PE class were vigorously active, and from the music room came the sound of children’s singing, youthful and loud. Nothing seemed amiss.
She rushed straight to her mom’s office, entering to see the familiar figure sitting at her mom’s usual desk.
She ran out of breath and shouted, "Mom!"
Shu Hui turned around, looking perplexed, "What’s the matter with you?"
"Mom..." She couldn’t say a word, dashed into the office, and threw herself into Shu Hui’s arms like a child, sobbing, "Mom... Mom... sobbing... Mom..."
"What’s... what happened?" Shu Hui was utterly bewildered; this child never liked crying. Even when her dad was taken away, and she was not well, all the burdens of the family fell on a five-year-old child, and even though it was so tough then, she never cried. What on earth had she gone through? Her gaze landed on the captain in uniform at the office door. Did something happen?
Tu Hengsha rarely showed such open emotion, clinging to Shu Hui, she cried for quite a while, "Mom! Mom, as long as you’re okay! You scared me to death! Mom, you’re the most important, most important person to me, you know?"
From the age of five, she had cautiously, with all her strength, protected this only family tie. Whether it was the early times when her mom needed her care due to illness or later when her mom took care of her, it was her strongest support through years of storms and hardships maintaining a smile.
This support must not fall, even more so, not because of her...
Shu Hui’s heart softened upon hearing this, the child was so strong, in her bad times, with short little arms, had pulled her mom into her small embrace, leaning her little chest against her, saying, "Mommy, don’t cry, you still have Little Sha; Little Sha will stay with you, protect you..."
And never once had she sought comfort by throwing herself into her embrace...
Gently stroking her daughter’s hair with a smile, she said, "Silly child, Mommy knows, you’re the most important, most important person to me, too. How could anything happen to me? There’s nothing wrong, I’m fine!"
After crying for a while, Tu Hengsha calmed down, realizing she was in her mom’s office, with other teachers around. She looked around furtively, and indeed, everyone was watching her and her mom.
She felt a bit embarrassed, pulling herself out of Shu Hui’s arms, wiping her tears, "Mom, where did you go just now? You didn’t answer the phone."
"Oh, a parent came, so I stepped out for a bit." Shu Hui took a tissue and gently wiped her daughter’s tears, eyes full of warmth, now noticing the band-aid on Tu Hengsha’s hand and the dried bloodstain, "What happened to your hand?"
Such things weren’t suitable to discuss in the office, she calmed down, full of joy at seeing Shu Hui safe and sound, "Nothing, I just wanted to see you, I’ll head back first, and come pick you up after work."
"Hey! It’s just a few steps from here to the faculty housing; do you really have to come and get me?" Shu Hui tapped her forehead lightly, her gaze still lingering on her hand.
"I insist on coming!" Noticing Shu Hui’s questioning glance at the captain, she explained, "He’s a friend, nothing to worry about, I’ll head out first!"
Leaving the office, she felt tremendously apologetic, "A misunderstanding, I got worked up for nothing, sorry about that."
"What’s there to be sorry for? I’d rather a misunderstanding than a disaster! Don’t worry, I’ll arrange for safety precautions..." As he spoke, he spotted Ning Shiqian, "Hey, why are you here, Captain Ning!"
The two criminal investigation captains from different districts shook hands.
Tu Hengsha felt even more embarrassed, confused and having forgotten she asked Ning Shiqian to take care of her mom’s safety today...
Thanking the two captains once again, she dragged her weary legs home.
The day’s events had left her mentally and physically exhausted.
She curled up on the sofa, not wanting to move at all.
Just then, her phone vibrated, and seeing the incoming call on the screen, her heart inexplicably tightened.
"Hello?" she said softly.
"Where are you now?" Came Su Ronggui’s gentle voice.
"At home." She shifted, finding no comfortable position.
"Didn’t we agree to meet at the bureau? I’m at the bureau now."
"Sorry, I forgot..." she pinched her brow.
"I knew you’d forget! It’s alright, should I come over and keep you company?"
Hearing his ever-gentle voice, she was stunned for a moment, then suddenly asked, "Xiao Xu, if I have done something that might betray you, would you forgive me?"
