Chapter 212: Chapter 212 Endless Long Night
Cui Pei returned home to find the place shrouded in darkness.
He assumed Fan Yue wasn’t home, but when he turned on the light, he saw her curled up on the sofa, eyes open, staring at the television, which wasn’t even on.
"Yueyue." He walked over, lifted her from the sofa, kissed her hair with tenderness and passion. "Don’t worry, I’m back."
Fan Yue looked up at him with red-rimmed eyes. "Cui Pei, I went to see Little Sha today."
"Did Little Sha scold you?" Cui Pei adjusted his position, pulling her into his arms. "It’s okay, she just doesn’t understand you. It’s normal for friends to have differing opinions. Even we argue sometimes, but true feelings can withstand tests. Someday, when her anger subsides, and she thinks it through, you two will reconcile."
Fan Yue shook her head with tears in her eyes. "No, she didn’t scold me. If she had, I would feel better. If she scolded me, I’d feel some relief. She said she didn’t blame me and doesn’t hold a grudge, and even said Grandma’s death shouldn’t be on my conscience."
"Isn’t that good!" Cui Pei wiped her tears. "Isn’t it better that she doesn’t blame you? Or do you wish Little Sha would resent you?"
"You don’t understand!" Fan Yue sniffed. "A true friend can argue and criticize, just like you and I do. No matter how much we fight or cause trouble, even if it comes to blows, we can’t be without each other, right? But Little Sha doesn’t argue with me anymore or say I’m wrong. That feeling is called indifference, called unfamiliarity, do you understand? She said she hates betrayal most, yet she doesn’t resent me. You know why? Because she doesn’t care about me anymore. I would rather she hate me; at least that would mean I’m important. The most ruthless punishment in this world isn’t hate; it’s indifference. We’re like two strangers now..."
"Honey!" Cui Pei sighed, "How can Little Sha compare with me? She’s just your friend, I’m your husband, your closest person in this life. We each have the other in us, inseparable. We have a shared home, shared assets, shared future, shared lifelong commitment. Can that be compared with friends? We’ll also have children together in the future, making even our flesh and blood common too. How could a friendship match that? Honey, we’re family, ranked equally with Mom and Dad."
"But... husband, family, and friends aren’t opposing forces. Why can’t I have both? And it’s your fault..." Fan Yue began to cry again, "If you hadn’t shared what I said, none of this would’ve happened, and Grandma wouldn’t have died..."
"Wife, I’ve explained this to you how many times?" Cui Pei remained patient. "I didn’t deliberately spill things. It was only when Mrs. Su and Miss Su asked that I spoke. I didn’t mean any harm by saying it. I didn’t know the intricacies of the Su family’s relationships! Mrs. Su is Su Ronggui’s mom. I thought she was asking out of maternal concern. I had kind intentions, who could’ve known it would backfire? I believe even the heavens wouldn’t blame me. Even Little Sha said Grandma’s death isn’t on you, yet you’re the one caught up in every little thing!"
He even playfully prodded her nose.
"If it really has nothing to do with me, would I drift apart from Little Sha? Anyway, I can’t clear myself of these matters!"
Cui Pei let her go, loosening his tie, "Wife, all you do is think about Little Sha, I’m getting jealous! Do you care about Little Sha that much? More than me? Your husband who works hard every day, early and late, for our family—who comes home with no hot tea or food. Do you only think about your Little Sha and not care about me?"
"You haven’t eaten yet?" Fan Yue was caught off guard, a bit surprised.
He removed his tie and coat. "At those events outside, I’m busy drinking and talking. There’s no time to eat. Even if there is food, it’s never as good as what you make here at home!"
"Then... let me heat something up for you." She felt a pang of guilt, getting up to pour him a cup of hot tea.
"No need..." Cui Pei took the tea, pulled her back to sit down. "I don’t need you to pour tea or do laundry and cook for me. I just want you to be happy. Seeing your smile when I come home from work is my greatest joy in life."
How could she not be moved?
"I’m sorry, husband..." she murmured.
She didn’t care more for Tu Hengsha than Cui Pei. It was precisely because of this that she felt guilty towards Tu Hengsha. She suddenly felt like she wasn’t doing anything right, neither a good friend nor a good wife.
Cui Pei sighed again, "Wife, where’s my fierce wife? Why have you turned into a Lin Daiyu? Where’s the Yueyue who dared to smash someone’s Bentley?"
"...I didn’t really smash a Bentley..."
"I know, I know, but my wife has that kind of spirit! Not a little crybaby!"
Fan Yue lowered her head in silence.
"Alright." He kissed her cheek, "Life is about gains and losses, don’t brood over what’s past. Being too melancholic isn’t good for having a baby, right?"
Mentioning the baby made Fan Yue look up.
"That’s more like it!" Cui Pei cradled her face. "No matter what, I’ll always be by your side, forever. And our baby, our family won’t be separated."
She nodded slowly.
"That’s a good girl. I’m going to shower, and could you find that suit I wore last time? If it needs ironing, take it to the cleaners. I need to wear it tomorrow evening." He unbuttoned his shirt.
"I have nothing going on tomorrow, I can iron it for you." Fan Yue adjusted her mood and walked to the closet. "Is there an important event tomorrow night?"
"Yes, Mr. Su is hosting a banquet tomorrow. It seems to be for the impoverished students he has sponsored over the years." He said as he walked to the bathroom.
Fan Yue found his clothes, actually, they were still pretty neat, but she decided to iron it tomorrow. The knot in her heart hadn’t really unraveled, but what could she do? What’s done is done. Grandma wouldn’t come back to life, but life had to continue, and the baby would come sooner or later.
When Cui Pei came in, he was still wrapped in the steam of his shower, lifting her onto the bed.
She knew what he wanted. Though she wasn’t in the mood, she didn’t refuse.
There were condoms in the nightstand drawer, but since their wedding, they rarely used them. This time, however, Cui Pei took one out.
"Didn’t you say you wanted a baby?" Fan Yue asked, half asleep.
"I’m currently in a career upswing. It’s a crucial time, and I’m busy. I’m afraid I won’t have enough energy to care for you and the baby. Once this year passes and things stabilize, we can have one. Honey, do you prefer a boy or a girl..." Cui Pei thrust gently into her.
The endless night unfolded.
