She asked again, and he simply lowered his head and sealed her lips with his. In the end, he said, "You owe me more and more now."

She asked what she owed him, but he wouldn’t say, leaving her puzzled.

She said she would accompany him for two hours, but they ended up lingering until almost midnight.

He picked up the car keys to take her home.

"I can go back by myself! You should get some sleep!" He really hadn’t closed his eyes these past few days.

"I’m not tired. Let’s go!" It was cold at night, so he took an extra coat and draped it over her.

"I really don’t need it!" She wrapped the coat tightly around herself, inhaled deeply of its scent, "I used to go back by myself in the middle of the night! I’m not afraid!"

He didn’t argue, just shut the door quietly.

"Really! Don’t go!" She pushed him back, "I’m not a delicate little girl!"

He took her hand and left, "That was before you had me."

"Huh?" She was momentarily confused, but then she realized what he meant. Her lips pressed together in a smile, and her eyes curved.

In the car, she still savored his words. What if he had been there before? What if he had been there before, how would things have been like?

"Xiao Xu..." she called softly, her eyes moist, "If we had met earlier, I would never have let you suffer so much."

He was fastening his seatbelt when he stiffened at her words, and after a moment, he said, "Silly girl."

"Why am I silly again? I’m not silly at all! I’m talking to you very seriously!" She remembered his past hardships, and her eyes turned misty.

He listened, finding it amusing, "Okay then, how would you keep me from suffering?"

"I want to spoil you!" She was indeed very earnest, "Xiao Xu, with me by your side in the future, I want to spoil you to the skies! We’ll raise a puppy together and do everything you like, I won’t let you suffer anymore."

At last, he brushed her flushed ear and whispered, "It was my mistake, a twenty-year mistake."

"What was wrong?" She felt dizzy, still a bit bewildered.

"I was the fool!" he answered evasively; his breathing heavy as he pushed her back to sit properly, "We’re driving now, it’s almost dawn. You might as well not go back."

When Tu Hengsha returned home, Shu Hui heard the noise, put on some clothes, and came out. She saw Tu Hengsha wearing a man’s coat and slippers, her face flushed.

There was no need to say what the situation was.

Shu Hui didn’t look pleased, "You disappeared for three days; I called you, and your phone rang at home. What’s going on now, don’t you think you owe me an explanation?"

Knowing she was in the wrong, she lowered her voice and said, "Didn’t I call back on the first day and tell you? I left in a hurry and didn’t bring my phone."

"I’m asking you right now! What’s going on right now?" Shu Hui stared straight at the clothes she was wearing.

She tightened her coat and bravely confessed, "Well...I’ve made up with Xiao Xu. I plan to go forward with him."

"That was a misunderstanding before..." she mumbled with her head down, "Turns out he always knew who I was; he didn’t mind at all."

"Little Sha!" Shu Hui exclaimed with distress, "It’s too hard for you two to be together! You will face great resistance in the future! Shang Qingmei isn’t someone to be trifled with! She will never agree to you two being together! With the old grandma of the Xu Family, you had some support. Once she’s gone, who will stand by you against Shang Qingmei?"

"We’ll stand by ourselves!" Tu Hengsha replied without hesitation, "Xiao Xu has broken ties with his mom; his grandma’s death was mostly because of her. Now he calls his mom Mrs. Su."

Shu Hui sneered, "Blood is thicker than water! He is still her flesh and blood; it’s not so easy to break ties. If I argue with you and you won’t talk to me for life?"

"So what? I’m marrying him, not his mom! Besides, he’s now living alone in a small house, so disconnected from his mom!" Tu Hengsha said dismissively.

Shu Hui flared up at once, "What do you mean marry? Are you not embarrassed? Did he even say he’d marry you? Rushing to get married?"

Tu Hengsha stuck her tongue out, "Well...sooner or later, I’ll marry him..."

Shu Hui gave her a slap on the bottom, "Girls are too hard to keep once they’re grown!"

"Mom, as long as you don’t object!" Tu Hengsha hugged Shu Hui, being coquettish for a while.

Shu Hui was still angry, "I object! How could I not object?"

Tu Hengsha laughed cheekily, "Thank you, Mom! You should go to bed! I’m going to sleep too!"

She dashed into her room.

Three days and two nights without sleep, reasonably she should have fallen asleep right away, but she couldn’t. Her mind played over inappropriate scenes between her and Xiao Xu. His starlike eyes when he leaned down, his heavy breathing, his soft lips, all like drumsticks, beating her heart into a racing rhythm.

Her lips seemed to still feel the warm, soft pressure as if the sensation would never fade.

She touched her lips, buried her head into the blanket, her heart thundering.

Guessing he had gotten home, she called him.

He picked up quickly, a low "hello" coming through. Her eyes crinkled into a smile, "Home yet?"

"I’m home."

She immediately complained, "Why didn’t you tell me when you arrived?"

"Miss, you blocked me. How was I supposed to tell you?" He sounded helpless.

She paused, then burst into laughter, "I’ll unblock you, let’s chat on WeChat."

After revalidating their friendship and removing him from the blacklist, she told him about Shu Hui’s worry. She actually wanted to say that no matter how hard the future might be, she would stand firmly by his side.
