Chapter 202 I Only Have You
Chapter 202: Chapter 202 I Only Have You
Although he said so, Su Zhen still pulled her into his arms, "Sleep."
"Mm." How could Shang Qingmei fall asleep? After the light went out, she stared into the darkness. The scenes from her dream reappeared, making her feel as if there were icy winds everywhere. She hurriedly called out to Su Zhen.
"Still scared?" Su Zhen asked her.
"No... no..." Subconsciously, she leaned closer to Su Zhen, "Will... will you blame me?"
"Blame you for what?" Su Zhen chuckled.
Her tone was very aggrieved, "I went to the funeral parlor today."
"What’s the big deal? After all, it’s Ronggui’s grandma. Do I really seem that petty to you?"
"I know you’re not... but..." Shang Qingmei began to sob, "I feel so guilty. If I had known, I shouldn’t have accompanied her up the mountain... I should have stopped her..."
"Oh? What happened?" Su Zhen actually only knew that his stepson’s grandma had passed away and hadn’t really asked about the details.
"That day, I... I wanted to see Ronggui, but he wasn’t home. His grandma was just about to leave, saying she was going up the mountain to see... see her son, and asked if I had time to go with her. I didn’t want to at first, but seeing that she’s an old lady without any transportation, I felt pity and agreed. Who knew... on the mountain, she was too overwhelmed with grief, lost her footing in front of the grave, and rolled down the mountain. If I’d known, I wouldn’t have gone with her... I should have stopped her from going..."
"Why didn’t you tell me?" Su Zhen frowned.
"I... was afraid you’d be angry, so I didn’t dare say anything."
Su Zhen patted her back, "Going up the mountain to visit your former husband would make any man uncomfortable; but you didn’t go willingly, and now that it’s happened, what’s there to say? As for Ronggui’s grandma, don’t blame yourself too much. Even if you didn’t go, wouldn’t she have gone up the mountain on her own? Just let it go, don’t think too much about it, sleep early. The company is a bit unstable now, don’t get distracted by other things."
"Mm." Shang Qingmei quietly let out a breath, grateful that the company’s current turmoil kept Su Zhen too busy to bother about anything else.
On the third day, Tu Hengsha and Su Ronggui took grandma up the mountain for a funeral. Once everything for Grandma Xu was settled, her lively presence turned into nothing more than a stone tablet.
In the afternoon, Tu Hengsha accompanied him back home, exhausted. As soon as they got home, he sat under the hanging persimmons in the yard, cuddling Bangbangtang. Bangbangtang struggled a couple of times before settling into his arms and licking his hand.
Neither of them had slept for three days and two nights; she sighed, took Bangbangtang from him, "How about you take a bath and then get some sleep?"
He didn’t say anything, just got up and went.
She and Sister Qian started tidying up the yard.
Suddenly, she noticed that the red wedding character was still pasted on his room window, overlooked for days now. She wondered if it was disrespectful to Grandma. Thinking this, she went over, intending to peel it off.
"What are you doing?" The door opened from the inside. Fresh from a shower, his hair was wet, wearing a cozy tracksuit.
"I..." Holding the half-peeled wedding character, was there even a need to answer?
"Leave it," he said.
"Oh, okay." It was his home, after all; he had the final say.
"Grandma wouldn’t mind and wouldn’t want you to tear it off," he added.
She nodded, "Alright, you rest then."
"What about you?" he asked.
"I’m going to organize the yard a bit, go over accounts with Sister Qian, then if there’s time, I’ll rest for a bit too, and prepare dinner later." Actually, she should have gone home, but she would only feel assured watching him eat dinner.
He nodded, simply said, "Alright," and shut the door.
She didn’t expect tidying the yard to take most of the afternoon and then going over accounts with Sister Qian.
Sister Qian pulled out a slip and a stack of money, "Girl, here’s the money I spent shopping, and here’s what’s left. You check it."
Roughly calculating, it seemed about right, so she accepted it. Su Ronggui wasn’t concerned with anything; all expenses were covered by her money.
"Sister Qian, what will you do now? Have you found new work?" Sister Qian had been hired by Su Ronggui to look after Grandma. Now that Grandma was gone, she wondered if Sister Qian had new plans.
"Not yet, it all happened so suddenly; I haven’t thought of going elsewhere," Sister Qian sighed.
"If you’d like, you can stay and continue to take care of Mr. Su. Grandma’s gone, Fan Yue has moved out too, with such a big yard, it’s just one person and a dog. Who knows if it’ll be the dog taking care of the person or vice versa?" She said worriedly.
Sister Qian agreed without hesitation, "Sure! Anyway, I’m not finished with this month, I might as well continue working!"
Tu Hengsha looked at the time, "Sister Qian, it’s four o’clock. You’ve worked hard these days; let’s both get a couple of hours of sleep, then get up to make dinner."
Sister Qian agreed and went to her room. Tu Hengsha also went to the guest room.
Maybe it was because she’d been too tired these days; when Tu Hengsha woke up, it was completely dark, and it was already seven o’clock.
She hurriedly washed up, went out. The yard was filled with the smell of food. Sister Qian had gotten up before her. Looking at his room, no light was on, the door was still closed, so he was likely still asleep.
She didn’t disturb him for now and went to the kitchen.
Sure enough, Sister Qian was cooking. Seeing her come in, she turned and said, "Almost done, just made a few simple dishes."
"Alright, thank you. In that case, I’ll go get Mr. Su." Seeing nothing she could help with, she turned and went to Su Ronggui’s room.
However, no matter how she knocked, no one opened the door. Worried something had happened, she directly pushed the door open; but he wasn’t there.
Her heart initially panicked, but then she thought of one place and rushed over.
Pushing open the door to Grandma’s room and turning on the light, sure enough, he was curled up in grandma’s usual chair.
"Don’t turn on the light," he said.
She turned it off and walked over gently, sitting across from him.
She had come to call him for dinner, but didn’t say anything.
For a long time, they just sat in silence.
Gradually, she grew accustomed to the darkness of the room, and the light from the corridor crept in just enough to faintly make out his face, pale and with long lashes drooping like ink-brushed lines.
He suddenly spoke, "Grandma once told me to sell this house."
Tu Hengsha didn’t know if he was seeking her opinion or just telling her. Hesitantly, she said, "Sell it... wouldn’t that be a pity?"
"How could it be a pity?" he asked in the dark.
Tu Hengsha looked around, though everything was shrouded in chaos, "Grandma must have lived in this house for a long time, right? She wanted to come back here at the end. Surely she has many memories here."
He unexpectedly raised his head, his dark eyes incredibly bright, "Aren’t you afraid?"
"Afraid of what?" She suddenly understood, "How could I be afraid? Grandma is family! If there really are ghosts in this world, I hope Grandma visits often."
Suddenly, he said nothing at all.
Outside, Sister Qian’s voice called for her.
She took his hand, "Shall we go to eat?"
He didn’t move, his thumb gently caressing the back of her hand, "Now... all I have is you."
"..." Her whole body tensed.
He looked at her with bright eyes, "Are you mine?"
