Chapter 199 Like a Child

Chapter 199: Chapter 199 Like a Child

Grandma slowly closed her eyes.

"Grandma! Grandma!" His voice suddenly rose.

Tu Hengsha and Sister Qian, who were keeping watch outside the room, were taken aback and rushed in immediately.

"Don’t make a noise..." Grandma muttered.

Tu Hengsha’s legs gave way as she sat down on the floor, and he slumped into the chair, exhaling deeply.

"It’s okay, it’s okay, everything is fine, don’t worry..." Sister Qian reassured them after checking.

He remained silent, simply holding Grandma’s hand, with his fingers feeling her faint pulse.

From then on, he maintained this posture, motionless.

Tu Hengsha sat on the floor behind him, wanting to say something. Searching through the ocean of words in her mind, she realized that any words were superfluous at this moment. In fact, she felt she was superfluous. This was a time for him and Grandma, not needing anyone or any sounds interrupting.

"Miss..." Sister Qian meant to tell her that the floor was cold and asked her to get up.

Tu Hengsha raised her finger and softly "shushed," asking Sister Qian not to break the silence.

Sister Qian sighed and left, gently closing the door behind her.

Tu Hengsha didn’t leave; she remained at his back, sitting on the floor, staring at his silhouette. Her mind went blank, and echoing in her ears were all the words Grandma had said to her. The little boy with round eyes and a sweet, clear child’s voice floated in her vision and heart, ranging from childhood to youth, cheerful, melancholic, timid, silent, changing and overlapping in her imagination until it finally became his current form in front of her. Even if it was just a silhouette, she could feel the solitary chill emanating from him.

In the illusion, the little boy crouched in a corner, his wet eyes looking at her, much like when she encountered Bangbangtang.

She reached out to the boy with tears in her eyes. The boy hesitantly approached her step by step, almost ready to be embraced when suddenly an alarm clock sounded. She was startled just as her fingers touched the boy’s fingertips. It was dawn without her realizing it, and she and he had remained sitting through the night.

She touched her tense, stiff face. Her tears had dried, and she couldn’t tell if the boy from just now was a dream or simply her imagination.

He still maintained his position from the night before, holding Grandma’s hand, his fingers resting on her pulse.

She quietly stood up and stood beside him.

Grandma lay with her eyes closed, breathing quietly, as if she were sleeping peacefully. Yet, when Tu Hengsha looked closely, it was like being struck by lightning.

"Grandma, Grandma?" She called softly twice, with no response.

Panic rose within her, and she called out again, this time louder, but Grandma still did not answer. With trembling hands, she reached for Grandma’s nose and then her chest. She staggered back two steps, tears brimming over.

She had no experience and was afraid she might have made a mistake. Stumbling, she ran to the door and called out loudly for Sister Qian.

Sister Qian came to check, nodded with tears in her eyes, "She’s... passed..."

Despite the commotion, he remained seated, holding Grandma’s hand, as if he hadn’t heard anything.

Tu Hengsha saw this scene and didn’t know how to wake him. She couldn’t bear to even glance at him again at this moment. In just a few days, he had visibly lost weight. His cheeks had sunken, his complexion appeared darker, and the dark circles under his eyes were puffy. The stubble on his face was rough and disorganized, making her eyes ache.

"Miss, Mr. Su, this..." Sister Qian reminded her.

She nodded with tears, "I’ll do it."

She tried to take his hand gently, "Xiao Xu..."

She couldn’t move him. She tried a bit harder, but her hand was slapped away by his other hand.

She touched her reddened hand, steeling herself to call him again, "Xiao Xu, Grandma, she’s..."

"Grandma is asleep!" He abruptly interrupted her in a rough voice, "Grandma said she’d wake up after a nap."

She instantly burst into tears. Amidst her blurred vision, she seemed to see the little boy from her early morning imagination, curled up in a corner with his wet eyes open wide.

She wrapped her arms around him and held him, allowing her tears to fall, large droplets landing in his hair, on his face. When she reached to wipe them away, her fingers felt wet and cool on his face.

She was startled and looked down to see that he was quietly lying in her embrace, eyes closed, with tears silently streaming down his cheeks.

She understood then that he knew everything...

She hugged him gently, rocking, "Don’t be afraid. It’s okay. I’m here... I’m here for everything... I’ll take care of it..."

All his life, he probably never allowed himself to be willful, but if he wanted to be willful this once, then let him be willful, like a child’s willfulness!

She comforted him as if he were a child, "You stay here with Grandma for a while. I’ll go handle some things."

So many things needed to be done! The first thing was to call the newspaper to request leave for both her and him. She also considered whether she should inform the Su family, but then remembered that Su Rongxing was at the newspaper, and the Su family would inevitably know.

What to do next? Like a headless chicken, having no experience at all, she figured it out step by step and asked Sister Qian for things she didn’t understand. Informing Grandma’s friends, the funeral home, memorial service, cemetery...

She listed each thing down.

"Clothes! The elder’s burial clothes! Who knows if Grandma prepared them!" Sister Qian reminded her.

"Then we buy them now!"

Grandma should now be taken to the funeral home.

Tu Hengsha prepared herself mentally at the door before pushing it open, ready to persuade him at length.

She walked to his side, held his shoulder, and whispered, "Xiao Xu..."

"Are they here?" He murmured lowly.

"Yes." Her gaze fell on his hand, which still rested on Grandma’s pulse, "We... have to send Grandma on her way. Grandma wouldn’t want to see you like this."

He remained silent, slowly releasing his grip.

She sighed in relief and allowed people inside to change Grandma’s clothes.

He silently moved aside but somehow produced a set of old-fashioned bright red formal attire, "Dress her in this."

"This..." Sister Qian looked at the already purchased burial clothes.

Tu Hengsha nodded resolutely, "Then let’s dress her in this!"

Surprisingly, everything went smoothly later on, and he unexpectedly cooperated. Both Tu Hengsha and Sister Qian breathed a sigh of relief, having thought he would remain stubborn. Still, he withdrew into his shell; people came and went but had nothing to do with him as he crouched by Grandma’s body, guarding the eternal flame.

Initially, these ensuing affairs had nothing to do with Sister Qian, but seeing there were no elders in the house, and Tu Hengsha was bustling about alone, Sister Qian felt too compassionate to leave and continuously followed Tu Hengsha to help. Seeing him indifferent to everything, she became anxious, "What can we do? We don’t know anyone coming here and don’t even know how to greet them! There’s also a lot to buy, and the cemetery isn’t chosen, what do we do if Mr. Su doesn’t care!"

"It’s okay!" Tu Hengsha panted while busy, "The eternal lamp needs someone to watch over it so it doesn’t go out. Let him watch it! As for these matters..." She pondered for a moment, "I will handle them! I’ll greet the people!"

She spun around like a top, constantly busy.

Among friends and family, nearly no one knew her, and she couldn’t introduce herself, but everyone tacitly accepted that she was Su Ronggui’s girlfriend huddled in the corner.
